i know there prbly a thread on this but screw it

im really not liking this new poless skiing trend

i mean this isnt roller blading

what do you think

well i just dont understand why you wouldn't use poles. They help me stop in lift lines, and if its flat i use them, and they are really useful when skiing in the woods and you are stuck.

i dont really care that much. some people make it look pretty good and whatever so i think thats cool but personally i like lighter shorter poles.

its just whatever you want to do and feel comfortable with

when i ski with out poles i feel like a retart on the mountain. my arms flailing around and what not

9 out of 10 days i ski with poles. 1 out of 10 days, i like to get drunk and just cruise around without poles. its fun and flow-y

The way everyone describes riding without poles seems to be like having sex with husky girls, It's way easier to grab.

Poles get in the way in the park. I started going no poles at the end of last season (Mt. Hood on Memorial Day weekend) and am never going to ride park with them again.

I'll keep them for big mountian, though.

its really fun to do it in the park but idk i would never do it off jumps bigger than like 40 ft... i would just feel way to out of control for some reason but yeaa some ppl make it look good and others make it look really gay

I skied no poles for a few days at the end of the season. Its so fun, I don't know why I never did it before. I will be skiing without poles  a lot next season

no poles on rails can look hella gay. i like poles for balance but i do enjoy doing old school trains through the park without poles.

who cares. I ride with no poles when I'm trying to learn preztels or carpet skiing, preztels are easier to do with no poles, ..I dont know why, they are tho, try it

I'm going to make a stereotypical assumption, excuse this, as it needs to be done for my reply. You are on this site, and going by a percentage, I'm going to say you are a park skier, and cruise and the mountain in spare time; but lets go back to the park skiing as that is where the previous points in this thread have led too.

First off you start by talking about rails, you then proceed to talk about how poles help you balance. I am going to put them together and ask how poles help you balance on rails. How do poles help you balance on rails? Is there a magical platform that is invisible to everyone on the hill besides yourself that allows you to lean on, with your poles, so you are correctly positioned an balanced throughout the duration of your rail slide? Or does the pound, if that, of aluminum,(excuse me if your to much of a baller and use some other technical gear) of the pole allow your body to sync into a perfect balance when that extra weight is positioned properly?

Off the subject of rails, lets talk about jumps. I believe if you have the abilitiy to jump off a jump, you have the ability to balance yourself your own way to the jump with the speed needed. When your in the air, i would like to know how the poles help you balance. Does it allow your 360 degree landing go from a not-so-perfect 355 degrees to a perfect 360 degrees? Or does a plant of the pole on the lip of the jump allow you to spin a textbook 360 with no questions asked?

I would love some answers as it will take away some of my confusion. Thank you.

that means you're a shitty skier. haha no offence but you obviously use your poles for the wrong things

Your stereotypical assumption is incorrect. I like to ski everywhere so I can become a well rounded skier. I was somewhat connecting those two together but I also meant just skiing in general. But back to your questioning, look at some vids of people sliding rails without poles. Most of what I've seen their arms are all over the place. My poles help my body stay more steady and calm in the air and on rails. If you have anymore questions please ask.

sometimes its pretty fun to ski with no poles because youre arms are free and i think its more comfortable without poles. but im still gonna keep my poles for flat land and lifts and stuff

i've only done it a few times, and only in the park....but if im anywhere else without poles i feel like a dumbass because i dont know what to do with my arms

you didnt pick up on my to/ too spelling mistake. *wipe sweat off forehead* that could have been messy. haha

one day when i was in the park my pole snapped and i figured that now would be the time to try out the no pole style and i felt so uncomfortable and disoriented that it just wasnt fun for me. poles are a good utility for me. and with out them i feel akward. but for those of you who can pull of the no pole steeze i applaud you because it is harder than it looks. and to those who hate it leave those alone who try it becauswe its harder than it looks

I don't like it when people do it all the time, but our crew's jumps we build and stuff I try it out without poles first because im too lazy to go hike to get them. It's good for your to do it on groomers and stuff as a drill, keeps you up straight and skiing balanced.

Put your hands in your pockets - like that edit of Mahre rolling the park in PC (I think). Anyhoo, you can't have more steeze than when you are casually killing it chilling with hands in pockets.

what i meant was i don't kno what to do with my arms.. i am an exellent skiier and i kno how to use poles

Lyndon feels the absence of poles helps him in his maneuvers.

There is one less thing to fall on.

Better grabs.

Use your hands for other things(snacks, picking your nose)

I have better balance without poles.

It feels safer for me.

When are people going to stop assuming that because people don't ski wiht poles they are trying to be snowboarders?

It's really not that important, most poeple just hold on to them because they are used to them, it's a sort of tradition.

They help me to ski solidly outside of the park but they aren't all that necessary all the time.

hate it or love....everyone will be opinionated no matter what the subjuect is. presidents, sports teams, flavor of ice cream, and oh yes the choice to use or not use poles. I use poles and i don't use poles, so be it.

And the people that use the cliched phrases no poles is gay or no poles lookes wack are just plain ignorant.

I think its just skiings way of getting back to our roots....aerial skiing! we do qaud flips with twisties, we just can't let go of our old ways of grabbing, I was even at a lumberjack jib contest this year and a history nut was skiing without his poles and was just doing loops next to things, and 5's off of rail pads. he touched the wood features maybe one in 10 times. its the future of skiing I think. we should all start looking like aerialists, this year I'm gonna go back to comfortable old leather ski boots and cable bindings, because this new stuff isn't nearly as cool and I don't always need a releasing binding.

its cool if you can do it mad steeze. but kids who hate on people who ski with are annoying, esp the ones who insist that its the future of skiing and that us stubborn pole skiers are the reason people like candide, tanner etc etc are not house hold names like shaun white.
