do not get a plastic shovel.
im personally a fan of wasatch touring. their folding saw has burly teeth (but isnt easy to attach to a ski pole for cutting blocks)...G3's seems to be the best for that.
kit should have: crystal card. ruler. slope angle dangle measurer. thermometer. magnifier (just get 5x or 10x, i dont really see a need for a 20x or 25x one). brush. rite in rain book. pencil.
another thing: waterproof pipe gloves. you can dig the pit with your regular gloves, but don't all the snow study is too cumbersome with regular gloves and too cold with bare fingers. ive dug a couple pits this last year at mission ridge with their patrol with pow sonic gloves they were better than bare fingers or normal gloves.
