Pick my dog

Just got done doing some research on them and I really like what I see. They are great looking dogs and as far as leaving them alone, I'll have roommates around but this is my first year living in the house so it'll be a good indicator on how much free time I'll have to take care of a dog for next year when I plan on getting it.

Get a poohuahua, bitches love poohuahuas.

dont fuck about, just get a Jack Russell Terrier. They kill all forms of vermin will run for miles and are loyal as hell. They need a serious amount of exercise though.

Siberian Husky. We used to have one, best dog ever.

Also it looks like a wolf, and wolf are awesome so that makes the husky awesome as well.

Well it's true small breeds may be harder to train, they are some of the smartest dogs around. I have two small chihuahua's (got them when I lived in an smaller apartment) that are eaisly the most well behaved dogs I've ever met. They walk without leashes, know over 10 verbal commands/signs, and are all around loving dogs. I ever litter box trained the tiny one b/c she's to small to go outside in the winter.

Huskies are hyper and need lots of attention. They like to run. They need to be kept active. If you have an active lifestyle then it would be ok. How many hours a day is it going to be alone again? Malamutes are the gentle giant of the husky with a more mild temperament, but they are larger and have more hair.

Definitely one of the best dogs out there. They are loyal, smart, easy to train, good with family, and they don't shed. They should be fine with being alone for a few hours, if that's what you want. Mine usually stays inside for at least 8 hours a day during the week without a problem.

Here are some pictures of mine

The only thing that can go wrong (which I have witnessed), is the dog outsmarts the owner. The dog needs stuff to do, not just give it a ball and leave it for an hour. More like take it for a hike and let it run to it's heart content. We brought my neibors Aussie out for a few hikes and EVERY time it would run off into the woods and bring back the hip bone of an elk, a rib cage. It was hilarious. She seemed so pleased with herself.

They are amazing loyal dogs, intelligent dogs. You just need to have the right lifestyle to raise it (btw they love snow)

pit bulls are awesome. they are super nice and each one ive owned have been an incredible companion.

I love how people are against dog breeding because there are already dogs in need of a home. Yet the go and breed there children when there are children who need a home

get a soft coated wheaten terrier. dont be scared by 'terrier' because mine is the best dog ever. he is the softest thing iv'e ever touched, and their fur can get really long, so i asssume it could withstand the cold well. they love to be your friend, and are very mild. mine is alone 6 hours a day and is fine. and they are the coolest looking puppies ever.

awesome puppy = babes

Why are you more interested in animal rights than human rights? or are you doing it to act like a good person?

Fucking sarah silverman brought it up on Bill Maher show. It was meant to be comedy. Comedy does have a meaning though. Comedy is the reality check for issues in society. It deffinetly is a valid point + Sarah silverman, whom could achieve world peace with enough good jokes.

Get a lab. Super loyal. Can live inside and out. And if you do it right incredibly easy to train, and will listen very well.

I have a yellow lab and he stays home alone for 9 hours a day while im working. Never had a problem with it.

I heard huskies are pretty independent and need to outside a bunch. I won't have too big of a yard, would this be an issue? But they would be great for where I'll be living considering how cold it gets. Also are they capable of being left alone for a few hours a day?

This was our family's first two dogs when I was younger, best dog I have ever had. Jake was the man before he got hit by a car on a winter day.. damn driver never saw him because he blended right in with the snow. Super loyal dogs really considering getting another.

Well that's awesome for me because where I go to school there are countless forested places that I could let a dog roam as long as it can come back in due time. Border Collie / Aussie are definitely on my lists for one to look into.

I have a black lab that I absolutely love. She's energetic, but she's never been too much to handle. They love the outdoors and are super nice to basically everyone. Labs can be a handful in their early years, but they mellow out a lot eventually. When both of my parents were working and my sister and I were in school, my dog probably spent five or more hours home alone every day. In my opinion they're also the cutest, so there's that too.

Funny dog story: One time I took her for a walk in this park with a creek so I decided to let her swim. Later that day, my family noticed she couldn't lift her tail at all. We gave it about two days and she still wasn't wagging, so my mom took her to the vet. It turned out she was so pumped to swim that she wagged her tail until she got something called "limp tail syndrome." For two weeks she had a limp tail.

I have a mutt she's mixed with border collie, chocolate lab, and springer spaniel she's the best very obedient and tons of energy. I would say try to get a mutt they are way cheaper and have far less health problems

I plan on getting a Malamute when I settle down:

But you need to make sure the breed you pick is the right one for you, look it up first, way too many dogs are abandoned every year.

I think you should go to a shelter to pick out a puppy. There are unreal amounts of animals abandoned every year, and shelters always manage to have really sweett dogs time and time again. Its definetely a cheaper way to get all the things you need with a dog ie. shots or if its an older dog even a spay or neuter. A lot of shelters are also importing puppies and dogs from places like South America and they're literally the sweetest things, and they really deserve a good home. I would go out and buy a dog from a breeder because they can be very expensive. If I was you I'd go for a mutt or whatever fits you best at your local shelter. Some dogs I DO NOT reccomend you getting are any sort of sheep/herding dog, lab, or husky. My best friend has always had aussies and border collies, but she lives on a farm and its outside running 18 hours a day. They would be very depressed to be kept inside, and don't seem like they're the kind of low maintenence dog you desire. Same goes for huskies. They are SO high maintenence and active its mind blowing, and very intelligent. This means that when bored they're gonna go through your house/backyard and make a huge mess/destroy everything. I know a lot of huskies, and have even been dogsledding, and they aren't dogs for those who desire low maintance dog ownership. Finally, I wouldn't reccommend getting a purebred lab because they often have really bad health problems like hip displaysia. The also are BIG shedders, my grandparents had 2 and it was a nightnmare. Their fur secretes oil, as they're bred fro fishing/hunting and being in the water so it acts as protection. But this oil is smelly and makes the dog greasy to touch, stink, and have terrible dandruff, especially when they age. people who are sensitive to animals oftentimes find themselves having intense allergic reactions to labs. ANYWAYS I could go on forever about which dog for you to get, but to keep this simple, I think you should go to the shelter and get a mutt. IT feels amazing to rescue an animal, and after having dealt with adopted cats, dogs horses and other small animals I can assure you its your best option. It really is inexpensive and after working in a lot of shelters it truly is amazing to see how happy you can make an animal by giving it a loving home. I personally can say that I would never go to a breeder ever after my experience with rescues.

I personally would rather have a child who shares my dna. If my partner and I were unable to have a child on our own I would definitely adopt. Its not like I have the choice between a dog that shares my DNA and one that doesn't, it's a dog. A child of your own vs a dog are two totally different things.

I hear people say this all the time, but i've known around 15 labs in my lifetime and not one of them has had hip displaysia. I've personally owned 2 and neither of them had any health problems at all along with several of my friends' dogs.

I really don't reccomend you doing that. Yes aussies and border collies are really trainable, and stick close to their owners but it still is a LOT of work to train them to even expect them to do that. Are you willing to put hours and hours of training into training a dog? And letting it roam the woods by itself? Bad idea. Even the most well trained dogs don't always come back, they should always ALWAYS be supervised. Border collies/aussies aren't really ideal dogs for you IMO. yes they have a lot of really positive traits, but still require a lot of effort. They need a lot, I repeat a LOT of exercise, and do best when they can run around all day. My best friend always has aussies or border collies and they're perfect for her farm, but she's openly admitted that she would not consider the dogs if she did not have 50+ acres and all day outside with the dog. It is a working breed, and thus deserves to be worked. They get lonely and depressed very easily from not having this "work" and when that happens they become unresponsive to training and destructive. Also, dogs like huskies are a bad idea for you. Firstly, despite being very intelligent dogs they are VERY VERY active. It is almost impossible to train huskies to walk off of a leash, as they are bred to run. Which roughly translates out to them running and running and never coming back. Also because they're so smart, they get into stuff and cause huge messes. I know a girl who stupidly bought a siberian husky for its looks and she left it outside because it was ruining her couches when she left the house each day. Surprise surprise the dog is left in the fenced in yard, where it promptly tore up the garden and dug its way out. Anyways, it seems like you're looking into those breeds for the right reasons, but from what I've read it really seems like you don't have the time for them because you are in school all day. Don't buy a dog that isn't suited to your lifestyle, it will ruin the experience for you. iHerding dogs and huskies are very intelligent but that also means you're going to have to spend hours with them training them so they do not use their smarts to wreck your house or your yard when bored. Its a lot of work owning a dog :)

My grandparents have had over 6 labs that I have me (they always adopt older dogs from rescues) and 5 out of those six were eventually put down because of their hip displaysia. It depends really on the breeder, but because people have been trying to shorten/extend the height of the dog produced tendencies towards them having hip displaysia can increase. It really depends on the breeding style of the labs.

Also about your other negatives for labs-

They don't shed any more than any other dog out there. I just take the time to brush my dog once a day after work and there really is barely any hair in my house because of it.

My dogs don't smell. Like any other dog if you take care of it and keep it healthy by just washing it once and a while that problem can be avoided. Any dog will smell if it's not taken care of.

And my mom is alllergic to cats and sometimes dogs. She has never had a problem being around my labs though.

Do you think humans should be allowed to breed for the purpose of selling kids? Your statement is ignorant and based on a comedy show.

All dogs can do well with a loving owner / home. Good luck.

Sperm donors, planned parenthood, surrogates, etc. That is fucking breeding. "Let me take someone elses genes and use them for my own child. They seem have good genes and my husband doesn't. LETS DO THIS."

Meanwhile in China.

Also "Your statement is ignorant and based on a comedy show."

tu quoque

These give people options who would like to have children with their own DNA but may not be able to have children on their own. Nothing against adopting kids. So go adopt 15 kids from China since your such activist and shut the fuck up already Angelina. Your killing this thread.
