PETITION: KEEP TOBACCO OUT OF SKIING

The only reason Snuss has been allowed to advertise the way they have is because the FDA has yet to determine what the long term and immediate short term effects of Snuss are.

And snuss is a totally different tobacco product then anything else. Anyone whos ever smoked or dipped, and then taken snuss knows that it is nothing like any other tobacco product. Kids could latch onto snuss soooooooo fast because of how easy it is to use. No foul taste or smell, just a nice little juice you swallow that gives you a good buzz.

I spent almost an hour reading through this whole thread and it sounds like every person who is arguing about this has the intelligence of a 16yr old. Get your facts right before you make outlandish claims or go on a fucking rampage about something that you have NO CLUE about.

I am an addicted ciggarette smoker and i in no way support this at all. How can you say that the average reader of freeskier is over 18? The avg kid on skis is under 16. Just look around your moutain at all the kids ripping through the park who almost certainly go on NS and read Freeskier. A lot of you need to seriously think before you open your mouth next time. Just cuase its the internet and no one can see you face doesnt mean you get to spew bullshit all over the place and at like a total dbag in defense of it.

I support this petition.

I'm only going to pitch one short comment here.

I have polled NS left and right, used every piece of user data we have... used at least 8 3rd party services... and guess what?

Approx. 78% of people who visit newschoolers.com are over the age of 21. That is a FACT that is provable by any legal measure that exists.

Do what you will in life. Only thing that is whack about tobacco over everything else mentioned that is also bad for you is its extremely addictive. Thats why the advertising has so many rules... if you try it a few times most people are hooked and almost unable to stop.

Don't focus on whats bad for you... because everything is bad for you. Thats not why tobacco ads are so regulated.

They're regulated because if you can sneak your ads into a place where kids see them... under the guise that its MOSTLY adults... then those kids try your product... they're hooked for life.

Again though... not making any judgments on morality. Just stating facts.

Too much drama for my taste.

Why is everybody all against tobacco when weed has been promoted as "cool" in skiing for years? Weed can have bad health affects too.

i don't know many computers that ask your age when you log onto your parents computer in the kitchen. Being as brief about the subject as possible, "it just ain't right"

Wow, i cannot believe that just about every single person who posted an argument in this thread assumed snuss was smoked. Im sorry but your honestly tryng to make a valid argument do a little background research, because at the moment you sound stupid and unreliable.

no such thing as too much drama... it's all about everyone participating in a great conversation about something that a lot of people are passionate about.
I support the petition because my grandpa died of mouth cancer after his teeth rot out of his mouth and his throat rot ought of his neck... and because i dont want that to happen to anyone i care about, young or old...
but relaxing is cool. Do what you will, just be educated about it... remember that:
THE MONEY THAT YOU SPEND IS IN ESSENCE SPONSORSHIP FOR COMPANIES AND DIRECT ENDORSEMENT
do you believe 100% in the ethics of the people/companies that take your hard earned money?
well you should, otherwise, your just another ignorant consumer/person who exists on the grid
ben wannamaker supports this
team manager of tmc whistler (we have a grom squad and if i saw them dipping id shit bricks)

Dude... brief statement with months of research behind it.

Check the 3rd parties... little companies called ComScore and Google. They both verify it.

Remeber, on newschoolers, for every ONE person that posts, there's TWENTY that read. It just so happens that the younger ones are who post.

I've tried time and time again to prove that its mostly kids here... but I can't. Fact is, lots of adults come here to see whats going on. Also... that 16 year old that started with NS is now almost 27.

More of a statement on the measuring tools.

Snuss keeps me going on those real busy days. People save their health vs. present time function and good feeling. Why? So you can be healthy when you are old and useless. Live now, die later.

First, it's your decision, so that's fine.
However that theory has some holes if you ask me.
A kid who starts snussing in his teenage years definitely runs the risk of ending up with mouth cancer by his 30's, 40s, or 50s. Now I know guys in their 50s who are still paddling into the biggest waves on the North Shore, screwing their gorgeous young wives, and being amazing dads to their families. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't consider that "being healthy when you are old and useless".

even if freeskier could prove that their demographic is over 18, isn't it pretty clear that anyone over 18 is not going to look up to pete olenick? I mean, by that age you probably see him as a sort of goofball at best.

looking upto someone isnt always the reason why people buy a product. its the fact that you see it over and over and over again that gets into your subconscious. just because a 30 year old doesnt view pete o as a "role model" doesnt necessarily mean that they wont pick up the company he is advertising over another company

cancer treatment from cigarette smoking is a huge social cost/burden, in the billions. these billions could be much better spent on social welfare programs for underprivileged/poor who never got a chance to begin with (instead of the dumbshits who get addicted to cigarettes), the environment (global warming prevention), wildlife protection, renewable energy development, job creation, education, human/equal rights activism...and hundreds of causes much more deserving of the TAXPAYERS' hard-earned money.

anyone who says "why should i care what other people do" is either a spoiled kid who has no conception of the real world and that money does not in fact grow on trees, or a complete idiot (or both i suppose).

seeing as 78% of people on ns are 18+, i am inclined to assume the latter. if u dont care what other people are doing, u damn well should, idiot.

next time (and I PROMISE this will happen to you as you grow up or wise up) there is an issue in which you deeply care about and in which other people hold opposing views, just think to yourself "why should i care what other people do?"

FOR EXAMPLE: noobs/gapers who go off the biggest jump in the terrain park to impress some chick, wreck super hard and become paralyzed, and then sue the resort/group of resorts for medical care compensation. these resorts end up taking some action which deprives us of our enjoyment for getting rad on snow.

EVERYONE'S INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS INFLUENCE EVERYONE ELSE. this is why you should care what others do, even if it seems like their mundane action only screws themselves over.

please do not be selfish, and care about what others do. if everyone does not, then everyone is f'ed...except for the trust fund babies.

jah bless, or whatever/

Newschoolers, Freeskier, athletes are people and personalities that a big part of who they are is represented by the brands they associate themselves with. If NS says we aren't down with Snuss then that says something about who they are and for some its positive others its not. It's should be a free world and anyone say whatever they want wherever they want and let the people's who back they are advertising decide if this represents who they are or not. I personally think you must not have much value if you can't say no to a tobacco comppanies money thus saying you have the same values as a company that sells aproduct with an ingredient in it to addict you as the way they gurantee you'll come back. Can you imagine if Taco Bell started putting an addictive drug in their tacos? Would that be legal too???

just watched Josh Bibby's wonderful new edit on Vimeo, with sick pillow lines, booters and big lines. and a snuss ad. of all tobacco products, snuss is the most clean and attractive, but the health dangers are still there. I assume bibby's sponsered by General Tobacco?

Smoked Marijuana can cause all of the same negative health effects associated with smoking tobacco except probably cancer. It is still very possible to get Emphazema (sp lol), chronic bronchitus (lol sp again), and other diseases of the lungs.
There are also certain mental disorders like schitzophrenia (god medical stuff is hard to spell), that mary jane can help to surface if the risks are aready present in your genes.

There could be other bad effects too, but there isn't very much reliable research on the subject which is a huge problem.

the argument i see is that kids shouldn't be exposed to it. you have to be 18 to buy it in the us so it shouldnt matter. if the government and employees selling it do their jobs kids won't have it. i don't think skiers will see a pro doing snus and then get a fake i.d. to go buy it. maybe they will be excited to get it once they are 18 but then they are legally allowed to do it and it is their choice. plus since there are laws regarding advertising to minors, i'm sure this fits within a legal sector or else it wouldnt be happening.

I dont know if anyone saw it but snus was the josupersessions background for a while too. I think if you have been effected by someone who has died of smoking, and seen all your friends pick it up growing up it really upsets you. It even cuts deeper when your the one paying for it in the future.

My vote is "just don't"

I don't back tobacco and skiing, it will be out of skiing soon enough. Rumor has it US legislation is passing this summer that bans them from sponsoring athletes, events, movies, etc.

j-lev at his finest!!!!! can you send me some of those addictive tacos please, we cant find them in europe... j/k he is right, it is up to an individual for what they do and believe in... i smoke cigs, dank, and lip some snuss, but i wouldnt accept a contract to promote that shit (well, unless chong's bongs served one up) just because i do what i shouldn't be doing, doesnt mean that i believe everybody should as well... personal freedoms, you know... i just try not to emphasize the tobacco part, but i'd bust a bowl out anywhere i can!!!!!! come on green, keep getting more legal!!!!

im going to buy a big 10lb bag and some tubes and just start rolling cigs for everyone over 16 on the mountain...purely in spite...because your all such fucking stiffs
get the fuck out of other peoples business(unless your life is so fucking lame that you must find entertain this way)...theres way more important shit to worry about...and if you dont see that then your dumb as shit...and people shouldnt be listening to you spew bullshit(aka your advice).
BAN THE WORLD! Its all addicting and bad for your health and people MIGHT abuse them...o mmmmmyyy!!! Lets all live in a plastic bubble!
