Pc or a mac? laptop

hey guys. just tryin to decide whether to get a mac or pc for christmas. i know that people say that pictures and editing is better on a mac but i got adobe photoshop for the pc and it awesome. and i heard premier pro is just as good as final cut. so im thinkin since i have a pc with all my info and shit on it. it would be just easier to get a pclaptop instead of a powerbook. is it hard to switch the info from pc to mac.?? anywyas what im tryin to say is PC or Mac laptops?

Final Cut rules over all, premier is just confusing and not as user friendly, adobe is for mac as well as pc...and the macs are just better...hands down.

well what are you gonna be doing on it. if is a lot of media, i would say mac. but if its for school and gaming, then maybe a pc

Have you actually used both? Or are you just assuming?

Final Cut and Premiere are almost identical.

Additionally, Adobe products are optimized for PC, not Mac. Photoshop on Mac is really infuriating.

technically i thought they were optimized for intel chipsets, which macs now have, so i guess its not a problem

if you're going to be gaming at all, you should probably get a PC, unless you know the games you play can be used on a Mac.

but that brings up a question i have.

since windows can now be run on macs as well as OSX, can i run my PC games on my mac? (i have a pc now, but i'm planning on getting a mac for school/work, so i'll have both). but thats just a side thought.

i dunno. i use both a lot.

as for the whole photoshop is infuriating on macs....BS. i use photoshop at school all the time, on school Macs (which are old G4s...they're getting new ones next semister, i hope), and photoshop runs fine on those.

yeah that is true. Right now though, all the intel macs have to run photoshop through a layer of emulation so that it will function on OSX.

I like macs though...I have a Macbook Pro. I just don't like it when people think Macs are better for everything related to deisgn (especially because of those goofy-ass commercials.)

Let me rephrase, they are for people who can't/won't deal with minor problems.

Be warned, macs can get viruses, and can crash. OS X is acutally supposed to be more vulnerable then XP, and if you hold off till vista, it definately will be. Also, mac puts out new OS's every year, so you are having to constantly upgrade. Just some things to think about, I was in the exact same position as yourself about a week ago.

i got a mac and i love i really dont use it for more than email and typin papers but its awesome no really big problems..but i would go with pc for work and mac for home

I juts can't see myself adjusting to the whole Mac thing. Like I've grown up using windows and having a right click button on my mouse, It would just feel way to weid for me too learn something new.

Get a mac unless you are a hard core gamer because macs don't have as many games. I am in my first year at university and after having a pc laptop for my 4 years in high school it is such a relief to use a mac. They are fast and reliable and I have not had any real problems as far as compatibilty goes. It takes about one week to figure everything out because macs are just easier to use. Plus, ctrl + mouse click = right click on a mac.

i know all sorts of people who have owned macs and had them freeze on them. the problem with macs is if something goes wrong it's generally harder for you to fix yourself. i love my pc laptop, i've had no problems with it.

i've edited movies on a PC and had absolutely no problems, this whole "macs are better for editing movies" thing is now bullshit; it's an obsolete argument, PCs rule.

also, i hate macs because of the gay commercials, but that's another point all together.

Way to pull random facts out of your ass.

1st. Theoretically, macs can get viruses. But they don't. There have only been a handful of controlled proof-of-concept viruses that were unable to spread.

2nd. "OS X is actually supposed to more vunerable then XP" BRILLIANT statment there Einstine. XP has this gaping hole for attacks...you may have heard of it.. its called EXPLORER. Mac's have pw authentication on everything so adware/malware can't just install itself. They also have an excellent firewall.

3rd. "Also, mac puts out new OS's every year, so you are having to constantly upgrade." Um ok...this is a bad thing? Apple puts out a new OS every 18months. Unlike microsoft who does it oh whats this 6 years with xp now?! plus they are $129 as opposed to $299 for the os. And you don't have to upgrade, its just nice to know that Apple is always working on optimizing their os instead of being stagnant like microsoft.

PSSHHHH YEEARRR BOOM. Oh what was that? Your arguement being shot down. And I'm not biased. I have used a pc all my life, am typing on a pc now, and just ordered my first mac.

1. They can, but don't because very few have been created for it. Would you rather create a virus for 97% of the market share, or 3?

2. Again, it takes a different kind to attach to macs, and people don't bother making them. Over time, macs have become something like 250% more vulnerable, whereas windows has become 78%.

3. If you are having to buy a new OS every year to stay current, it is a pain in the ass. Microsoft doesn't do that, instead it puts out things like SP2. It fixes problems with the current OS. Microsoft has also put out massive variants of XP. Most notable is Media centre (2004-2006 I believe) as well as x64.

You haven't shot down shit until the person responds.

1&2. Ahhh, yeah thats my point exactly? They don't get the viruses and attacks because of their market share/image/a number of other things. This is a good thing. And about security.. This is a good quote i found that I think sums it up pretty well

"The truth is, security is still not a major factor in most people’s OS choice. I’m sitting here saying I think Vista is more secure, but I don’t plan on switching off my Mac. Security is about being “good enough”. As the major target for attacks, “good enough” for Windows is significantly higher than “good enough” for Macs. Until Apple sees the same kinds of exploits on the same scale there will be little motivation for them to invest so deeply in security."

Heres some info on the improved security in Leopard http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/142/449695/30/60/threaded

Apple knows they are ahead of the game when it comes to being the focus of attacks but they are securing the os instead of having to fix it once its broken, something that MS has been grilled for in the past and may have finally got it right with vista.

3. This isn't a good point. Just because it's available doesn't mean you have to buy it. There are still 10.2 users out there just like there are still win 98 users. However, I'd much rather have the option to upgrade then not to have it. 10.1 was the only osx release that was really an 'update' (like sp2) the rest were full blown os upgrades.

1 & 2 By all means, if you think a mac is more secure, and that is important, go ahead. But it isn't. Once Mac gets more of the market share, or if someone decides to fuck with macs appeal, they are going to get hit, and hit hard. It is only a matter of time.

As for the quote, security, especially now, is extremely important. Too many little fuckers running around trying to hurt you in someway. Vista is much more capable of stoping it then Mac.

3. People on 98 are idiots. ;) If and when apple becomes a target, it wll be game over. It just doesn't have the security needed. Just like 98 doesn't. I think I am on a computer (school one) that runs 2000. Thing crashes like every 10 minutes because of how bad it is. Vista is getting rid of most of the legacy code, making it much more advanced then any OS on the market, as well as more secure.

You may not need to get the latest OS on macs, but when they come out so often, it is easy to become behind the times, whereas Windows just puts out upgrades that can be taken straight from their website.

One guy said, arguing about Mac vs. Windows is like arguing about religion. Everyone has their preference, and whatever the arguements against either, they will not change.

and people don't bother making them, therfore making macs safer.

macs have become 250% more vulnerable....0 viruses before, 3 now.

pc has become 78% more vulnerable....200,000 viruses before, 356,000 now.

what an excellent way to try to confuse people with numbers....

if you're a college student, it's like $60 to upgrade to a new mac operating system.

just save yourself time and buy a mac now, because you'll regret not doing it no matter what.

i really don't think this is correct....i think mac already has a big enough percentage of the market share to encourage to write a virus for them. if they knew how....

Actually 250% of 0 is zero, but that is beside the point. You completely missed the point. Mac are much more vulnerable to viruses and spyware, but no one takes the time to attack them. If someone ever decided to, it would mean disaster for Mac. Half their platform is that they don't get viruses.

3% versus 97%? Hardly. It is a waste of time right now. They aren't affecting enough people. If people keep buying into the false security of mac, and their market share grows large, then they are going to get absolutely smashed.

i started my freshman year of college this year and i bought a fully loaded white macbook for like 1400 with the student discount, and it's the best choice i ever made. my dad is a graphic designer so i grew up on a mac, until we got a family computer (pc) like 7 years ago. since then, i've been on a pc and had nothing but problems. my mac runs flawlessly, as do photoshop, illustrator and final cut. i'd definitely recommend a macbook or macbook pro

Photoshop is much faster on a PC or on the older macs. adobe still hasnt made photoshop on the mac streamlined for the intel processors. so photoshop windows version performs better on the inteol core duos andmac on the Mac runs better on the older apple G5s (this should be fixed in Jan- Feb when photoshop CS3 is released)

as far as editing Final cut pro is a very good tool but the standard still is (and has always been) Avid editors wether its Avid Xpress or Avid Composer or whatever, avid is available for both MAC and PC but the same problem occurs as photoshop it hasnt been streamlined for Mac+ intel so the current version is faster on older G5s or Windows.

the future version of both these aplications should run better than they do now on MACs and be equivalent to the PC versions.

the Macbook and macbook pro are great computers and with bootcamp can run windows XP unfortunatly I dont think they will be able to run windows Vista which is coming out soon

not considering future upgrades I would say MAC since windows Vista will most likely require a change of most of your components to run the way you want.

Windows Vista will require full HDCP compliant parts to run at the Utra HD specs that windows wants to make standard.

Macs are more secure they use the same principle as Linux where you have permissions for every folder and most programs dont have access to alot of folders where as windows gives any program access to any folder.

so although it is possible to introduce malware into a Mac it is pretty hard

Windows Vista will change that, Microsoft's security scheme is taken from Linux and then expanded upon. every folder has permissions and is pretty much in its own bubble so if somehow a virus is able to get on your machine it wont be able to execute itself and if somehow it is able to run itself it wont run itelf on the machine it will only be able to do it on one user account which means that if their is a virus you can just log out and that will freeze the virus. all that is if you dont have antivirus.

bottom line right now Mac is more secure because of the permissions but Windows Vista is taking the system that LInux introduced and bringing it up to date

Vista. Until Leopard, which takes further security measures again. That was what I ment when I said pw authentication for everything.

true, but macs suck. dont say that then very crash and all that other shit on the fucking apple commericals. i use a g5 at school at it crashes on my at least once a week because of an over load, i use my pc at home, and it is fine. FUCK MACS!

i personaly am on a mac book running xp pro and ive been having some trouble with the dual boot of the system, other than that though i think its awesome, it runs cs 2 like a champ and anything else i throw at it. another thing to keep in mind is that compatibility between mac programs and pc programs is a bitch. over 90% of the world runs pc's. thats why i do as well. people can hype apple all they want and i thin that they make a great product but there is nothing about their operating system that makes it so great. sure it has a ton of features to it but there are so many stupid, pointless and retarted idle procesess that it realy hinders the operating system's proformance. i would for sure go with a mac laptop over a dell or something like that though because compatibility is always an issue, dell does not realy use anything that is universal. if your dell breaks down you are sending it back to them to get it worked on, best buy and places like that will not do it for you because it is such a pain in the ass, trust me i tried to work on a dell i had a while back and i could not get compatable parts for it, the only things that were universal were the processor, sound card, and video card.

So what is the point of getting a Mac over a PC? PC will have better hardware for the same price. Vista will be a much better OS. Can handle anything that Mac does just as well. What is the appeal?
