Origins of biblical scripture

OK this is off topic, but what in this thread isnt right now anyways. i was watching some video in law class, because my teacher was a feminist and borderline hated men, that basically showed how most the opression women faced (and still face) in the western world was based on judeau christian ideals. there's many different examples, but most are based on the belief that women are the reason we don't live in the garden of eden, because eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and therefore owe men some sort of debt. which translated into them being treated as less than human. one example of this, was when mid-wifery(sp?) was illegal, or not allowed or something, because the pain of childbirth was punishment for a woman's sins (tree of good and evil thing, and such)

by the way, i dont believe in god...and sometimes think christianity is simply one of the biggest and wealthiest cults on earth. feel free to debate that, its just something i've noticed.

That is why I felt it was really important I say - normal religious folk - this is not directed at you. As you said, a lot of people get a lot of good stuff from religion and it is important to recognize its contributions, because many of its lesson, while not super complicated, are ones people need to learn.

It is the fuck retarded who over look those lessons and just see where it says "God saw all that he had made,

and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the

sixth day," and literally thing "Damn, God, nice job. You work fast!"

Exactly! Thank you. Religion is not a bad thing and specifically Christianity teaches good morals that many human beings need to learn. It is when it is taken too literally or too the extreme that it becomes bad. Example, 9/11. The terrorists who attacked the world trade centers did it on a warped idea of jihad, or holy war. They in no way represent the whole of Islam, as it actually teaches a peaceful and loving message. In a much less extreme way, people like Joshua who take the Bible as literally the word of God, give other Christians a bad name. In no way was the Bible meant to be taken literally. Many of the things discussed are impossibe and even the Catholic Church has stated that the Bible should be read in context and with an open mind, not literally. I'm not a personally religious person and currently have no affiliation with any church or other religion. However, I accept others view and ideas on religion and really dislike it when people warp the idea and purpose of religion to seem self rightous where they are better than others because others don't "believe."

Lol if you think that the bible teaches good morals you better go back and read it again hahhha. Let's just shorten that and say Jesus taught good morals. The bible does not.

I disagree on this point. The Nazi party and the church were actually quite involved with one another. There were many who believed that the Third Reich was a completion so-to-speak of the Reformation and that the ideals of the party lined up with the ideals of the church. Kind of messed up, but definitely true. My uncle is a history prof. with his masters and PhD focusing on the church during Nazi Germany. Definitely fascinating stuff!

I can't believe how quickly this thread has grown since last night. I also cannot understand why every single thread that has to do with religion automatically becomes a debate between creation and evolution. Kind of ridiculous. There should just be a Creation vs. Evolution sticky and people can argue over it forever without taking over other meaningful religion related discussion.

you know what i love..... how NS (and the whole world) rip the christian bible to shit. (fine by me) yet you never hear anything on how Jesus walked in America (the book of Mormon). or how joseph smith translated gold tablets in NY. you also never hear a demonization of Islam..

but we all know how shitty of a religion christianity is.

everyone knows the mormons are nuts justin. i mean even on a religious scale of insanity, they are crazy as fuck. and you hear PLENTY of demonization of islam, recall those threads where people wanted to ban it? all religions encourage ignorance and intolerance. period. does this mean we can get rid of them? no, they have to right to do as they please. however i also have the right to point out how dumb they all are.

but please, stop playing the christian victim (not you specifically, im talking in general).

People say that i am a Christian but i dont like the sterotype linked to that name. I have several examples to make the Christian bibles words have never been changed just written in different context. The diciples record from their experience and time spent with Jesus the new testiment is written mostly bu paul. The old testiment was written by Moses mainly and abraham Abraham was one of the few who talked directly to God and when he asked God whereGod came from he told abraham that his mind could not handle that answer and it would be something he could never understand. Like i said the christian bible never has been changed now the mormon bible has been changed over 200 times in the 1960s the mormon bible actually said that black people were demons. The QUR'AN has also been changed from its origanal text. to explain the earths old age some christians believe that a day to God is more like an era making the earth very old thats not exactly what i believe but its just an answer and im probably off topic by now so i will stop

what are you saying Justin? That you're surprised that in America, a society that is predominantly christian, when people hold a dissenting view of religion, it is based around the predominant religion of their area?

You think that if America was predominantly Hindu, we'd be having this same argument about Christianity?

most of us haven't had the exposure to many of the beliefs or customs of religions other than Christianity, barring Joshua, most people like to withhold comment about things they don't really understand.

hooooweeeee!!

Real debate aside, Joshua is either an EPIC troll, or is too stupid to create an argument anywhere near an adult level.

My 2 theories about why people created religion:

-To gain power over other people.

-To make sure no man could claim himself as a god.

I don't see how a religion can help us more than "treat others the way you want to be treated." But, it has hurt us by justifying a lot of killing.

What it does try to do, that the golden rule can't, is promise us life after death. This is why a lot of people believe religions, not many people are dead set on being good people, they want to live forever. I feel like living forever is a human creation, and god was created in man's image.

good point on Christianity being a dominant religion.

i actually have not read the whole thread. (and dont plan to) so i can only assume this Joshua character made an ass of himself... (maybe just for shits and giggles i will go back and read it, but i dont have a whole lot of time for NS anymore)

i would counter that this is NS, and the world for that matter. people comment on things outside their mental capacity all the time. one only need look at any serious topic thread on NS. maybe some people (i like to think myself in this club:) try and bone up on things before discussing them, but dont kid yourself there are a ton of people out there who are a few fries short a happy meal.

but im the type of person who couldnt give two shits if you worshiped batman, or santa claus, just dont try convert and tell me im going to hell for not ascribing to your religion..

The bible is made up of passages written by people that knew jesus or saw /met him through out jesus's life. Their are some passages through out the bible that jesus specifically said. Every thing in the bible was published less then 50 years after jesus died, which means there was very little time for anything untrue to be put in the bible without someone that knew jesus seeing it.

holy shit this thread got biblical overnight. haha

I didn't read it all... or even part of it. What I did read was comical, stupid, and concerning.

Few things I picked out. Some kid compared Darwin's On the Origins of Species to the bible saying they were both written by men, stupid. One is fiction and one is based on careful scientific observation. If you can't understand evolution then there is little hope for you, study something like geology, tremendous time line, very hard to comprehend. Same idea as evolution. You can literally see evolution in fossil records. It is NOT a theory, it is scientific fact, there is no debate, there is no alternative. It is undisputed scientific fact. After you understand that there is no debate.

Unfortunately if you don't accept evolution then you instantly loose all ability to debate.

Blah blah blah you know where I'm coming from basically if anyone argues with me about religion I think your an idiot and/or weak minded. I don't know which one is worse.

Just live a happy and productive life and try to be good to people because every body needs somebody sometime.

You know that many of the Old Testament men had more that one wife right? Jacob married Leah and Rachel. Solomon had a HUGE harem (700 wives and 300 concubines). Those are just a couple.

Solomon was not following the Lord when he married all those wives. God told him not to intermarry with other cultures but he disregarded this and did it anyway. He did this so that he would be able to make peace. This caused big problems for Solomon when he was older. Jacob did not indent to marry two women. His uncle tricked him into marrying Leah, b/c the custom at the time was for the oldest daughter to get married first. Of course Jacob was not going to just leave Rachel, and there was no divorce at the time (i think) so he married Rachel also.

i mean seriously what? god is a racist? didn't he create all the people on earth? he made solomon better than others? do you or your family apply this to your life?

Why did God allow Polygamy in the old testament? The Bible does not specificely say why. There are a few key factors to consider. There have always been more women than men. Current statistics show that around 50.5 percent of the world population is women. Assuming the same percentages in ancient times, and multiplied by millions of people, there would be tens of thousand more women than men. Also, warfare in ancient times was crazy, with a huge fatality rate. This would have resulted in an even greater percentage of women to men. Also in ancient times it was nearly impossible for an unmarried women to provide for herself. Unmarried women were often subject to slavery and prostituiton. So it seems that God allowed polygomy in ancient times to protect women.

God told Kings of Israel not to intermarry with other cultures b/c He didn't want His people to be influenced by false religons and turn away from the one true God.

Makes no sense to me that god creates all these people that belong to so many other religions. Did he not create everyone on Earth Josh?

Holy shit kid! first your argument hinges on gender statistics you will never be able to prove. second, it is very apparent that polygamist marriages subjugate women.

I assure you, I know all of this. You made it sound as if you were unaware of men marrying multiple wives in the bible.

Really, you wouldn't marry someone with the same morals and values as you just because they are non-christian? anyone else see the racism parallels here?

If you are wondering why Christians do not follow practices like unclean and clean food here is why: Before Jesus ever came on the scene, God made a covenant with the nation of Israel. That covenant was based on the law of moses. To be part of this covenant it was required that a person worship God only and live by that law. To break that law was to commit a sin. The penalty for sin according to that law was death. In order to spare the people, God instituted the sacrificial system, where an animal would be slaughtered and it's blood shed in the place of the sinner. the problem with this system was that b/c man is sinful he keeps on sinning. So repeat sacrifices were required: everytime a sin was commited. Skip forward about two thousand years, and God sent His son Jesus to the earth. Jesus lived a sinless life, and laid down His life for us. He was nailed to a cross and hung there until He died. He took the place of His people on the cross and paid for our sin completely. Jesus' sinless life and sacrifical act fulfilled that law of Moses. He made it redundant and instituted a New Covenant-the covenant of Grace. Now believers live under His Grace, not the judgment of the law. This does not mean we live our lives as we like, we live to please God. But this does not mean we are no longer under the obligation and judgment of the law. Many of the laws found in the old covenant were instituted to protect God's people. There were laws that kept them seperate from the idolatrous pagan nations around them. Others kept them free of disease by forbidding them to eat certain animals, and other laws regarding society and their relationship to both God and each other. Many of these laws are fufilled by two principles Jesus taught: Love God, love your neighbour. If we do these things we automatically do the right thing according to the law. The old covenant was about actions, while the new covenant is about the attitude of the heart. It goes much deeper than the old covenant. So Christians follow some elements of the law, not b/c we have too, but simply a byproduct of wanting to pleas God. Other laws are no longer applicable. We no longer need sacrifices or priests on earth. God declared all things clean after this.

and no.

the whole first half of the bible was written before jesus was even born. and only the first four books of the new testament were written by people know knew jesus. most of the new testament was written by paul who had never met jesus.

Yes God did create everyone on earth but He did not create different religons. He made everyone in His image. Man made up different religons after the fall.

im sorry but really? really? i understand its your beliefs and you can believe them for all your life, im not going to try and stop you. but really ALL other religions are made up by man, EXCEPT yours?...

How are the statistics unable to be proven? There are more women than men now, and in ancient times many men died at war. Also, i think most girls would rather live in a palace than be a dirty prostitude or a slave

^^^^When asking if you practiced deuteronomy he was asking if you believed non-virgin brides, adulterers, and people who have sex during the woman's period, should be killed.

I am a little hesitant to say this b/c i know it will really piss some people off, but yes that is what i believe. Christianity is the only religon that focuses on merely believeing. Every other religon has a bunch of rules you need to follow to get to heaven, but with Christianity, you only have to believe. There can only be one religon that will get you to heaven, amd that is Christianity. Bring on the hate, i really don't care
