"French warplanes have hit four tanks used by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi on the outskirts of the opposition stronghold of Benghazi, on a day when opposition fighters in the city reported coming under constant artillery and mortar fire. The US has also launched cruise missiles from ships based in the Mediterrannean Sea, and has taken the lead in military operations during the first phase, Kimberly Halkett, Al Jazeera''s correspondent in Washington DC reported. The action marks the first international military moves against the Libyan leader, and it comes a day after the UN Security Council authorised a no-fly zone over the North African country."
Thoughts?

i think its a good thing. For once the US and other countries have a legitimate reason to use military force.

Sort of agree, although 9/11 seemed like a legitimate reason to attack too. I mean I don't really know much about any of this, but I personally don't know if it's going to be good for our country down the road. Who knows though.

A single BGM-109 Tomahawk is $US 755,851.27 * 120 = $US 90.702.152,4....Expensive firecrackers.

That compares to two Lamborghini Murcialago's and an Aston Martin V8 vantage strapped together.

and apparently they had two b-2 stealth bombers doing the rounds last night... shit is getting really expensive

We sure like any excuse to use our toys! Canada is sending a few planes also which is super surprising.

as long as we take a "supportive" role in this I'm fine with it.

If we side with the rebels and the rebels arent fit to fight Gaddafi's forces, who's war does it become? ours? I certaintly hope not.

Via Reuters on Twitter: "Arab League chief says air strikes on Libya differ from the no-fly zone which was called for; aim was to protect civilians not bombard them"

You have got to be kidding me, what the fuck do they want? No intervention and they scream for "justice", and once they get their wish granted they go and whine about how it's not what they wanted.

A No-Fly Zone must be preceded by strategic strikes on ground assets first, you can't just suddenly send in planes without neutralizing the threats! I mean what the hell did they expect anyways? When there is military action it is simply naive to expect there will be no collateral, that's just a part of the package when you call for military action.

For once I'm siding with the US on this one, wouldn't have done it for Afghanistan/Iraq but I think the "Arab League Chief" and his buddies have their heads up their asses for this one.

love people who blame this on "typical america."

it means, first off, that you know nothing about the resolution

There is a no occupation policy within the rules here. So even if ground troops ended up in libya, they would be required to leave within 90 days (I believe. i heard it was taken from the war powers resolution of the US)

And people don't seem to realize that this wasn't something the US wanted. They actually refused a few weeks ago, which is why it took this long to get it done.

This is not like afghanistan or iraq. This is more like France helping the US during the American revolution. Help them get it done, help sort things out...then leave.

i wouldn't waste your time with all that hocus-pocus, fancy talk you doin because the retarded 80% of this site couldn't properly comprehend it. to them, america is evil no matter what and bush knocked down the towers because the evil empire is trying to eat all the oil and rule the world.

this particular military operation doesn't make sense to me. how many civil wars in africa have we sat out and watched from the sidelines? why join this one? yeah, i know gadaffi is massacring his own people, but thats still nothing new. part of me kinda thinks that this is how wars go, people die, and if we intervened in every single civil war we sure as hell wouldn't be a power for long.

congress has already approved a full conflict. American troops in the Mediterranean, have been on full standby for the past few weeks. all it takes is obamas work and we put troops on the ground. Just wait a week or two and let us blow the shit out of their country enough for it to be safe to land ground troops.

You are right but no one in the west will because Saudi Arabia is intervening to protect its' own interests and the media wont cover a major US ally in that way

What we're doing is providing security. We aren't at war with Libya, or the rebels. We fired missiles so as to guarantee the safety of our own aircraft.

I mean, yea, at it's core, it is a bit unconstitutional, but at this point....

Not that it matters in any sense, but the founding fathers also dreamed of the United States becoming a force capable of helping others around the world achieve democracy.

yes because the constitution really covers this sorta thing...

so we should really just let all those darned, evil rebels be slaughtered by their own army because let's face it, if you want basic freedoms then maybe you shouldn't be born in places like libya. duh!

war powers resolution of 1973 kinda covers it...

However this is a case not greatly covered by the constitution. It's like a genocide-no one really knows how to fight or stop them.

This is government sanctioned killing of people who are essentially civilians.

Personally, I'm all for helping oppressed people. It would be wrong, in my eyes, to sit back and say "oh well they aren't from the US, so they've got no right to freedom or any liberties. Let them deal with it on their own."

not that i care for either, nor am i aligned with any party...but remind me again, how is this similar to what bush did?

this is a NO FLY ZONE. What that means is that we run their sky. End of story. I read that use of ground troops is authorized, but any form of occupation is not. IE as soon as the threat is gone, they leave.

this is not an invasion, like what Bush did.

oh i'm sorry, was that a point you were making? no? just a pathetic attempt of being insulting? well then, ok. nice to know that you're not letting the whole red vs. blue political rhetoric cloud your judgement, making you look like a complete jackass.
