One reason why weed should be legalized?

Okay, just so you know who this is coming from. I don't smoke, at all. Anyways for about a month or so I've been plagued with this question: why should weed be legalized in the US? Honestly I don't see any reason whatsoever that it would benefit the American Society in a positive way. This is a serious question. I don't give a shit about your "fuck you mannnn I smoke dat sour diesel all day nukkah I luv weed!"

if weed was legal it would be taxed, therefore bringing another umpteen billion dollars to the government to spend pn schools, hospitals, roads, etc

and you couldnt inquire to any of the million other threads contemplating why weed should be legalized? just, no.

watch the union if you want a reason.

instead, why don't you tell us why you think it shouldn't be legalized? or regardless of your opinion, tell us reasons why it should stay illegal

Because Gov't spending is out of control and we need to find new ways to generate revenue. This would bring in billions of new taxes.

so potheads have nothing to talk about and the government can tax it at what i would assume a similar rate to which they tax cigarettes.

besides bringing money into the economy, saving on overpriced court fees, there isnt a reason, but in the same sense of that, why is alchohol legal? because it bring in money. and it does hold some medical benefit but i believe that the medical marijuana society is severely abused.

Economic surplus. its a multi billion dollar a year industryLess people in prison for frivolous marijuana charges.its less harmful than alcohol and cigarettesLess drug trafficking issues with mexican cartels still wheeling weed across the bordersitll be controlled by government and its recession proof so taxes and money all day everyday no matter how shitty the economy is.

there are more benefits than negatives. people who don't smoke weed will continue to not smoke. people who do smoke weed will now be able to do it legally.
most people have tried it or won't due to fear or its against their beliefs. So the people who tried it and didn't like it wont go out and be stoners all of the sudden. smokers will smoke drinkers will drink and the world will not end if weed is legal./thread

although i do smoke occasionally, and im not from the US, i could see everyplace turn into permifriedisha. and then guys will have no more sperm, no more babies, end of US. lol at worse case scenario.

The national deficit is over 14 trillion dollars and each day it increases by around 3.8 to 4 billion. By taxing marijuana as a cash crop and distributing it through pharmaceutical coporations while the 17 year patent law is intact would only put out a revenue of around 6-40 billion dollars per year. This would leave the debt increase per year still well over 1400 billion dollars. To me at least, that's not a legit reason, but interesting nonetheless

I'm going to go about this in a civilized way.

First of all, it is only illegal for various political reasons. Mexican immigrants were bringing it in so they outlawed it in hopes of slowing immigration. This was back in Richard Nixon's day. And hemp, the agricultural product of the Cannabis plant, was competing with cotton and other large industries who had ties in the government.

Now as to why it should be legal, there are many reasons.

First of all, it would be a boon to the economy. The government could regulate and tax the shit out of it, thus making a lot of money. Also it would decrease crime. No more drug cartels pushing marijuana, only cocaine. And MJ is a large part of their business. Also, it has medicinal qualities and there are ZERO deaths directly from marijuana. Compare that to alcohol and tobacco. Furthermore, if it was regulated and taxed, the gateway aspect would no longer be relevant. It would be sold by legitimate businessmen and/or the government. No more buying it from dealers who also push harder drugs like coke and such. I could go on, but these are the main points.

If anyone reads this and feels I missed something (I probably did) or I am misinformed (I could be) Then feel free to correct or add.

The medicinal values of Marinol which is an axenic version of THC is a drug that is legal and provided to those who require the effects of medical marijuana. It provide the exact same relief and has been shown to have the same tumor reducing symptoms.

Also, alcohol obviously is legal. I think it's safe to say that must DUIs are because the person is under the influence of alcohol. I think it's plausible to believe that alcohol is drunk more in public especially while driving because it's more socially acceptable. One would be naive to say that people wouldn't drve and smoke marijuan like they drive and smoke cigs. The reaction slowing effects that weed has on the body could be enough to jack the DUI rate as it would inevitably become more socially acceptable to smoke in public. Again just my 2 cents

So what about the rest of what I said?

Do you think it's good that people are being arrested and being incarcerated in our already over-crowded prisons, and we are wasting time and money in court, over marijuana?

Let me ask you this. Why should it be illegal? There is no valid reason. At all.

Saw this posted in another weed thread and couldn't have said it any better so ill just post it here -
"It's pretty fucking ridiculous for the government to tell people what they can and can't do with their body. Somebody smoking isn't going to hurt you. Honestly it's not hurting them either but we won't go there. Should the government tell fat people they can't eat fast foods? How far should it go? I mean alcohol is legal and far more dangerous than marijuana. But besides that, since it wasn't really the angle I'm going for...

Marijuana prohibition is retarded. It hasn't kept people from smoking it, it hasn't made it disappear. Where has it gotten us. We spend 50 billion a year on the drug war. We put 10s of thousands of people in jail every year for non violent drug offenses.

That's all fine though but you can be against the idea that people should be able to do what ever they want with their body. I think that's a big fuck you to the constitution and pretty ridiculous, but whatever. Here's an angle for that...

Even if you believe that marijuana is an evil drug and should not be used by anyone, blah blah blah. Drug prohibition doesn't work. IT failed hard for alcohol prohibition. We need to learn from our past mistakes in history, not continue the same faulty ideas. Alcohol prohibition didn't even come close to getting rid of alcohol. It brought in organized crime, gangs with machine guns, had people selling ghetto ass bathtub gin, put not violent people in jail. Same thing happened with drug prohibition. IF you get into the economics of it... Prohibition made drugs a crime, making them illegal sent them to the black market, plenty of room for profits to be made here. You raise the penalties even higher to make people more likely to stop, all you do is raise the price of the drugs which creates more money to be made. Every time you arrest a dealer, it opens a window for 5 more guys to fight to fill that void. It's like a tree dying in the rain forest, that spot doesn't sit there vacant for long. A whole bunch of plants try to fight there way up to get the sunlight now open. As long as drugs are illegal, there will be money to be made, and no shortage of people trying to get rich. For gangs this is the perfect opportunity. Sell drugs, profit$$$$$ huge, buy weapons. Shoot the piss out of rival gangs for moving into your turf.

Then the other angle of HEMP and industrial application. The energy problems we're seeing today should make us more likely to start using hemp. Instead we're getting shitty alternatives like corn ethanol. There is a breed of hemp plants made specifically for biofuel. We could start growing it to offset our oil dependence. Start using it for paper, hemp fiber paneling. Henry ford knew what was up when he built the model T. Hemp paper lasts for fucking forever, like the declaration of independence. Yields better and grows annually.
Our founding fathers, presidents, all kinds of people back in the day grew hemp and used it, many smoked it. So why is it a big deal for somebody who wants to get high after work? How does that hurt you?
"pot should be legalized for medicinal use, with regulation so not every pot head who claims their eye hurts can get some but rather pot for severely ill patience like this kid"
Yeah that's abuse of the system but the system is completely whack.
How does somebody smoking a bowl in their house after a long day have anything to do with you and your life? "

well it is a drug, and that is still no reason for it not to be legal, and one personal reason that i dont want it to be illegal, i like my hook hes a chill kid.

Please read what I just posted, and also who said that there were only 2 extremes, decriminalization or incarceration? Why not just place a fine on possession or usage, eliminating the jail penalty.By the way I never said it should remain illegal, just stating facts. I'm seriously interested

The guy that was talking to you about anal in your thread about getting cheated on PM'd me. he said that you are a typical NS'er and he hates both of us because he saw us "in cahoots talking about drugs" and that I'm a weak incompetent druggy. It was pretty interesting.

The plan is not to fix the tax deficit entirely. It would though help and there is no denying that. To try to cut the deficit with one tax is outrageous.

Because there is no FUCKING REASON to place a fine on possession or usage. That is the worst of both worlds. It remains a black market product, but none of the positive aspects of legalizing it would surface. So it's a lose-lose.

You will never accomplish anything by saving 40 billion( and the absolute maximum, wishful thinking is 6) dollars per year. In 200 hundred years you would only have saved 8000 billion dollars while the national debt would have increased by 292000 billion dollars. Virtually doing nothing. And that's assuming the deficit doesn't increase

my friend (obnoxiously conservative) had the dumbest argument the other day. he said that the revenue that legal bud would create would be cancelled out by a decrease in national productivity because more people would smoke.

anyone ever try and pull that shit outta their ass on you?

If you think that it's okay to drive under the influence of marijuana you probably are too young to drive in the first place or really have a gigantic lack of common sense.

God you are stubborn. So if it doesn't make the deficit go to zero it's pointless? Use some common sense. If we use multiple strategies decreasing the deficit by 40 billion, that's how we will lower it. So this is a step to decreasing it, and there would be no adverse effects. So why not?

You are making yourself look ignorant and stubborn. Just stop now.

hahahahahah thats funny as fuck. Idk man these rookies just don't understand that after dating a girl for longer than a year you can do pretty much what you wan. Gotta keep the sex interesting so yeah i like doing that with chicks. And i also like drugs. Soooo i guess that makes me the typical 19 year old college student who happens to visit newschoolers. hahaha
and this thread is ridiculous legalization is a good idea. Prohibition is an out dated measure that has run its course.

really? REALLY? have you ever smoked? have you ever smoked and driven? can you say you understand what you just said to the fullest extent? no, i dont think so.

What's ignorant about believe in fact? You still haven't answered my question which is to give me a legit reason why marijuana would TRUELY benefit American society. You could tax my fucking feces and it would minutely help the national deficit but it won't happen because it wouldn't make a difference.

Nope, but there have been DUI incidents where people have been killed in car crashes and the driver was under the influence of marijuana. Yes I do understand what I said because I KNOW YOU WILL ADMIT THAT MARIJUANA IS A MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCE BECAUSE IF IT WASN'T THERE WOULDN'T BE POTHEADS, WHAT NOW!!!!!! HOLAAAAA

sorry, got a little excited

Holy shit, I gave you like 10 reasons. How much benefit does it have to have to TRULY (you spelled it wrong) benefit society? It would decrease crime, decrease the deficit, reduce spending, and help many people enjoy their life more. If it was legal, people could raise the quality of their life by smoking marijuana and not have to worry about all the negative aspects (getting arrested, gateway drug, black market, etc.)

since when is getting 40 billion a year not a benefit? why you say no to making money when you're in debt?
Say you owed someone 1000 dollars and someone would give you 40 bucks to watch they're dog for a night. would you say no to that or take any money you could get to get closer to paying off the debt?

eh driving stoned is never a good idea. or on anything that will compromise attention span. cars are really dangerous creatures.

im guessing he doesnt smoke?

to be honest, im very productive while im stoned and working. i dive right in and get my shit done and if anything, i pay MORE attention to it then i would if i were "sober".

as to why it should be legal: medicinal purposes for one. my grandfather had terminal cancer when i was 16-17 and a few days before he passed, i sat out on the back porch with him and he lit up what i thought was a cig but it was a joint. i started to give him shit for it but then he explained to me, in great detail, why he was smoking it. the chemo made him sick to his stomach so in turn he never ate anything but smoking that gave him the appetite he needed and eased the pain for him. so in that regard, im all for it and have been since that very night.

secondly, I live in upstate new york and as of now, i believe our taxes and debt are higher than californias at the moment. legalizing or at least decriminalizing it would make a huge difference on the taxpayers wallet. tax the shit out of it like they do with cigs and put it to some use rather than cutting education and the likes. also, if it were decriminalized, it would keep the folks out of jail that really dont belong there because it costs almost $30K a year to keep a prisoner in a minimum security prison. that right there is a years worth of tuition at a kick ass college.

Oh and this is stupid. I drive under the influence of marijuana almost every day and it does not affect me whatsoever. Show me some statistics or some proof that marijuana causes accidents and I may have this debate with you, but as long as you back your arguments with circumstantial bullshit I will continue to destroy them all.

oh come on. do you really think people should be operating a giant piece of metal when they're fucked up on anything? it puts lives at risk, something weed is meant to do the opposite of.
