Olympics? Hell no!

first of all....
Figure skating is an olympic sport, so your art argument is invalid (they dress up like quee** and dance on ice, doesn't get more artsy....)
and competitions are already a big part of our sport, i don't see why the mother of all competitions shouldn't include skiing as well....
+i'm def. stoked to see some cool action sports on the olympics instead of all that bobsled and speedskating ....

dont tell me bobsledding isn't awesome going super fast down a icy chute in a metal box. what could be cooler?

ok, bobsledding is def. cool, but i do find it kinda boring to look at.... if you've seen one run, you've seen them all... unless, and i dont want to sound sadistic, someone crashes....

^^ and i dunno how the olympic broadcasting was with you guys, but in belgium, everytime i'd turn on the tv to watch reports/live broadcasts it'd either be speedskating or bobsled....maybe a coincidence, but it was kinda frustrating....

Bad+smell

the smell of a troll is strong!

I'm excited for closed minded adults to see that skiing isn't just GS and moguls. but we better not get the judges that reference Shaun White every 3 minutes

This is a big + for skiing. It might eventually put into perspective what we all do when we say that we ski or free ski.

^^altough i do realize now that isn't gonna be part of the Olympics...but hey, Pipe is a very good start :)

This must be one of the most least thought through, and worst argued threads ever. You need to tell us why you think this is such a travesty, it's to easy to just go online and say it's stupid. And, as before mentioned, competitions are already a big and successful part of our sport, so i guess it is possible to compete in freestyle skiing. I applaude and respect all aspects of our sport, and i see it as one big entity where everything feeds of eachother, both through inspiration, but also through rivalry. As for skiing being art, i don't really know? I see it as a lifestyle and the art side as only an aspect of it, i don't really agree that you can define skiing as only art, but it's definitely a part of it.
But come on, let's hear your reasons/argument for calling this a mistake?

Lol yeah. You guys gotta realize what you are doing isn't a sport, but halfpipe skiing is A: Definitely a sport and B: Nothing like the way the rest of us look at skiing.

i hate that shit. i think it stupid when people say that they are "expressing themselves" through skiing. what does a rodeo 5 really say about your personality?

i totally agree homes. freeskiing is about expressing yourself in any way you want to on skis. theres no rules or expectations you can do whatever you want . the olympics will bring rules and standards to a sport about having fun and doing your own thing. freeskiing is exactly that its free. its about having no one tell you what is right or wrong.

I don't want it in the Olympics really either...major contest for that matter i'm not into. Freestyle skiing started as a way to get away from the stiff structure of moguls and even racing. When the New Canadian Air Force started it was because they were sick of having to do one or two particular tricks to win contest. They wanted to be "free" and ski how they wanted, do what tricks they wanted, do what they thought was fun. Others that grew up racing like myself were sick of it because where is the fun and individuality of going around gates. BORING! I wanted to shred around the whole mountain, jump off shit, do what i wanted to do.

If you look at major competitions there are only certain trick that will win the contest. Its not "free" anymore, its becoming to regimented and predictable. Sure a lot of the tricks that they are doing now are ill, but the only way to win is if you link together particular trick, and do a particular amount of rotations. Look at Phil Casabon, does some of the most unique slopestyle runs and he'll never win, why? Because he isn't doing a dub. Thats wack. Freeskiing isn't meant to be judge like that.

If halfpipe makes it in (which lets be honest, it will because the olympics need new sports that the youth want to watch) they are going to have to quantify what tricks are worth, which will lead to them having people laying down very similar if not exactly the same runs in order to win. And i'll gurantee that they won't give two shits about what grab you do in your trick, only that its a tight compact rotation and everything stays together. People will be laying down the same run and it won't be that rad.

Look at the Dew Tour event at Snowbasin this year. Watch Dumont and Jossi's runs. Identical, only Jossi got one more hit. I think Jossi deserved the win because i thought his style was a lot better, however thats subjective, anyone can argue the other way saying Dumont went bigger. That bothers me, because they did the same run, and thats how the Olympics will work...everyone will figure out what the hightest scoring run is, get it down, and they'll all be doing it. Its to regimented, its killing the spirit of Freestyle skiing. Call me old school and stuck in my ways if you must, but i remember when the whole newschool skiing revolution began and we are so far removed from that for the most part.

Most of you probably won't even read this whole rant so whatever..enjoy watching the same run by 12 different people in 2012 or whenever the Olympics are.

say wha? you dont think that a trick represents your personality? well maybe not that exact trick, but the way you do the rodeo 5 will represent your personality through your style. Shifties, grabs and all other things that can happen while doing a trick represent your style and personality. so if its on a canvas or snow (call it what you want) each trick you do and the way you do it represents who you are as a person.

JAH

agreed you cant really judge skiing can you really? because it is an art form every one has their own styles, and thats why you cant judge it. yer i love comps, because you get to see so many different styles. but i dont want freeskiing in the olympics, propley because i live in england and i only know 2 other freeskiers, and its ours, we go hit up the snowdome and its great because most of the people there and really cool, i feel that if we do get into the olympic then most kids around me and going to want to ski, that means dickheads on skiis and packed snowdomes. but on the plus side ouir sport would get more exposure what means money to build on what we got

Drop the artsy-argument please...
Olympic sports that are judged and are definately more artsy than halfpipe skiing or freeskiing in general:
Diving, Synchronized swimming, Gymnastics( Artistic, rhytmic, trampoline, each category split into like 10 sub-categories), Dressage(fancy horse-walking), Figure skating, Aerials, Moguls, etc...

It's true. At least race walking has a winner that isn't dependent on judging. The fact that skiing halfpipe is being more seriously considered for the winter olympics than ice race walking is a travesty.

wait skiing isnt a sport? damn and i've been calling myself an athlete...
but seriously, other than the potentially gay judging, i think its really sick and im stoked that people will be able to see another side of skiing other than racing and moguls.

it will be fun to watch in the Olympics but im not sure its the right thing for skiing. im sure a lot of you will disagree with me but thats my opinion

yeah, i follow your lead, but come on, they grab eachother by the crotch....
theres no way you can honestly be convinced that todays railgame is more / then figure skating....

How is half-pipe skiing in the 2014 olympics a bad thing? If you don't compete in pipe it has zero effect on you. Want to go ski big mountain freestyle for yourself? Go nuts. I really do not understand how you can object to other people you don't know competing in a sport you participate in recreationally. It's awesome there's a good chance the sport will be added. The only possible downside is that competitors will have to qualify at FIS events.

like powder 8's? that shit is sooo legit. and you actually paint a picture. and synchro skiing would be dope as hell in pillow country.
