Ok, so there's some problems with the site... how do we change it?

This is going to be a long post, and hopefully a long thread, so bear with it and try to read the entire thing.

I always hear "NS sucks now" "NS was so much better" "I'm leaving NS from all the hate" many comments like that. Each and every one of them scare the living piss out of me. You see this site is my only job. It's my livelihood, my life, and my passion. Pathetic as that may seem, I love it and wouldn't trade this job for any other in the world.

I'm glad that Ethan stickied this thread, as I feel this is an issue that we all need to band together and deal with. You see the problem with simply leaving to go ski, is that skiing only happens for MAX 10 hours a day, and then you're pretty darn tired. There's always time to check the internet, and a lot of times the internet can be pretty darn interesting.

Since this is our job, all of the admins have the time to make changes to the site, and improve it to be the perfect place for all of you to come and do your thing. We've lost Jacob, and many other members to the hate, shit-talking and general stupidity that fills the forums. If you "read between the lines" you see that there is wonderful content on the site, it is just sometimes hidden within lots of crap. Most internet forums are that way, but instead of simply accepting it, why don't we try and do something about it?

First off, our team of mods (bless them) put countless hours into cleaning up the site. Every time a thread is deleted, there is huge backlash from the member who created the thread. Every admin/mod has the authority to delete anything you see on this site, and the simple answer would be to do more harsh moderating. Then we get into the whole "freedom of expression" and blah, blah...

Perhaps, if people really feel that NS is terrible, we as moderators of the site need to start deleting more stuff. I know I'd be more than stoked to simply remove anything I deemed useless crap. Perhaps this is the way to go, perhaps not.

I would think that the very first step is for everyone on here to think about what they're saying. Really ask yourself, "did this post contribute?" if the answer is no, then don't post it.

We've also discussed various ideas that would facilitate positive threads. Thread rating systems (like the pics/vids), member karma, mod ability to bump threads up and down, etc... perhaps a new technological feature is the answer?

As well, there is a bit of a lack of stuff for people to do on the site. The news was average this year so far, the reviews/articles/tricks sections are all broken, and lots of the site's traffic was focused around the forums. We are changing this. Next year we will have an actual news department, and the broken sections of the site will be fixed soon. There are more changes being added, and overall we want to improve the hell out of the "member experience". Perhaps this will be a part of the solution as well, as people will have more things to do than simply talk shit in the forums.

My main point in this thread is that if you guys hate the way the site is, then let's change it! We've got a team here that works full-time, and we can change anything we want! It's the internet! It's not like anything is in print, so we can change anything, everything, nothing, whatever about the site at any time. We want to make it the perfect site for you, and make it a fun place for all skiers to come and share opinions, and learn about this wonderful world of skiing that we all live in.

So take some time, really think hard, and formulate a response to this thread.

NS has been the site where not only skiers get together, but other people in the industry. Young film makers, photographers, designers, entreprenuers, everyone is on the site. Even guys who work in shops and tune your skis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a NS hugging bitch and I hate how many whack kids post insignificant things just to show their friends they made a stupid post, and I support Jacob's post 100% but also think the beneficial sides of the site should be reviewed."

The relative few who do allude back to the "good ol days" of NS, when it was like a community, are referring to a different NS. The Karma Rating system, you cant really get rid of it completely, just kind of remove it from the forums or something.

the whole search bar thing is out of hand, if every1 used the search bar there would b barely any new topics and the site would get dull fast. and u cant make a language thing(what the guy above said) that part of what mkaes NS great. the biggest and best thing that could be done is to ban kids quicker.. ifsome1 is hating for no reason or tlaking shit out there ass then have a mod send some formal message that counts as a warning then the next time they get peaced out
 
I think people should just ignore the shit-talking, people are taking the internet too seriously, we don't have control over what other people say.
 
1.) NS overall is a great site, and I dont hate anything, But what i do hate is some comments that people make in threads like you said for example ("SEARCH BAR") Then thre are some things that i dont hate, but do sometimes annoy me...for example...When NS radio is on, the songs arent labeled...Also for some people, not me persay, cant post vids on NS cause they are too big, so sometimes they are forced to find alternative sources that may or may not work. Then there are some spots that are just not utilised for me, for example the classifieds. I prefer forums and videos personanly.

2.) One would be increase file size capability for pictures, forum icons etc. Two would be get rid of bad messages and thread that appear pointless...agin like you stated. And lastly be more efficient on teh contests, i know that some are out of your control, but some may not be.

3.)I really loev the videos and pictures sectio. I like to see what other people in the sport are doing and how they progress throughout the season. Then I like the forums, it gives me a chance to talk about skiing, where as maybe at school not so many people ard willing to or not. But although above i said that the promptness on the contests wasnt that great, i still enjkoy the challenge of answering the questins. Also i enjoy the news section of NS befcause it keeps me up to date on vital info around the country involving skiing. And i like the ski disuciion forum becuase it can help with many problems involivng skiing

4.) There are not many things that could make it better, but one would be maybe to control posts, hard but logical. Then make NSTV come back...that was always sweet looking, overall just make all the sections (over time) no rush, working and fun to use, maybe update games?

5.)Well one idea for stoping crap talking in threads is give people karma ratings..like you said...and after so many times they get kicked off the site, and they will learn. hopefully. Temporarily ban them for bad messages, and give them a message for when they return explaning why they were temp. banned. I think overall that a rating for peiople in forums, like when they create it and when they post gives the relativity of the thread. Meaning if they have a good karma rating their threads would be rated higher...maybe on a 1 to 10 scale... Not sure but thats all i have

6.)As i have said above and as you said, just make it so people dont hate, i wouold rather have a nice, communitive online community where its not so bitchy persay

Suggestions would be to enhance the searchbar. I feel like a lot of questions about tricktips are repetetive, instead of the earlier trick tip page that once existed, the mods or you dictate what enters, and people can send stuff in through email and w/e you decide is worthy will go on the page so stuff like 100000 degree spins and quad misty flips dont fill the forum with junk, and it would be like the pic forums so for example the topic is

following it would be users with advice, and only the stuff approved would appear so it's all helpful. maybe one day we could have video links on the side of each trick tip to add to the effect like skiingmotion.com once had.

i like the simpicity of ski/non ski gab. i dont want that to change and have 10k forums of random topics, so keep that the same

the cults as far as i am concerned are a huge success! at least the ones that have lasted so far! that was a great idea. the blog idea is very cool, and maybe at first only allow it to privileged members who will post well at first as a test. like how it is now, reading about your life is fairly interesting Bishop and nopoles i might add*

OK i only am an asshole to people deserving of it so il put that on the table before i go ahead and lay down this statement, NS will never be the same as it once was, we have to adapt to change, This is like the US constitution it was written during a time when things were simpler ans skiing was just in its roots and everyone was stoked.. Now that we are in a different time and those of us who are good and think ourselves to be the Elite are straight up annoyed with all the kids who come on her for answers we cant give or questions that are striaght up common sense. Frsutration leads to hate and that where it comes from, not to mention the fact that people are brave on the internet and will say anything to get a reaction , and oh boy do they get a reaction and they feed of it. things to change.. i think you had a great idea with the thread rating ability.. it woulk keep us from going to pointless threads or the ones that you click a link and gapy porn popps up.. i dunno the aliasses are beginnign to get annoying. lil gordion doesnt ski but he flogs the forums with his freestyle rap battles which shouldnt be aloud he doesnt ski and he doesnt contribute to anything

The constant desire for many members to be the alpha male/female. They alwyas have to say the last word. How easliy many ppl get offened. Ive seen so many good threads go to shit b/c 2 memebers start going at each others throats. If you want to argue, do it over IMs, dont waste our time here. Had another good thing, but i forgot. I love how you can come here and get the inside scoop on everything. How most members are here for the general good of NS. I really feel connected at time to the industry. Nothing was better than the live thread with j-lev! i love the blogs too!

check out www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums they have a cool system of karma and reputation rating system. With all the points you can earn, you can change your username, color of you name, font, ect, you can even change a persons subtitle.

Grandmasters in cults should be able to delete threads. and make stickys!

Bring back NS clothing!

Make an adult forum, not to post porn or anything, but to talk a adult things and have intellegent conversations.

the reputation idea i think would work to an extent, if a asshole is trying to sell his gear and ppl see that he has a really bad rep, they wont buy from him. But the asshole wont want to get a bad rep cause he knows what will happen, so from the get-go he will be nicer.

NOTHING! I absolutely love ns, and everything about it.. i spend most of my time and here and its actually fun. The thing i dislike is not the site, but a select few of the kids that come on here and complain, hate and attempt to piss of all the members

delete ALL members that cause problems and put nothing but shit talk into there posts.

one a member puts up a picture, and some trashing starts, give him/her the ability to delete that post/posts, instead of just deleting the entire thing

Everything! I always enjoy my time on this site, even if im not posting.. i can actually sit for hours and read threads and look at videos, never getting bored. Its fun to talk with all the other skiers, in threads or the cults

you cant really control what people say but you should post on the forum page that the mods of NS have the right to delete any post/thred that they belive shouldnt be on the site
 
1) There is only one thing I really really hate about NS and I think many will agree with me when I say the useless posts. The ones that put down and trash things. The top 2 would have to be Snowbladers and No poles.

2) I think if we had

a) some rules, which is partly why NS is good, there isn't a whole lot of them!

b) A rating system where people can rate other peoples posts from 0-5. This system should also show who rater the person, the value of the rating and why they liked or hated it. If they give it above a 3 they don't have to write anything, but anything below should have an explanation by it so we don't start WW3. And finally

c) A section that lists all of the mods names and a way to contact them, email, instant message (if they want to list that) or a pm button.

3) I love NS because it is a place to kick back and talk about sking, the world of sking, what you as a skier have accomplished. It's a place to share ideas, ask what others think about your ideas and find out some cool ideas. You guys (the staff) cover a lot of news in the ski world and report on it. This news is given to us in many ways, pictures, articles, video and even audio (Doug's Interviews and the big NS Radio) The list goes on from things like the Ski Equipment section which helps us sell gear (which doesn't always go over smooth) and buy some.

4,5,6) These kinda tie into #2. Some things that could help the site would be things for buying and selling gear. There have some disputes about this lately and I have felt the effect first hand of bad online deals. One thing could be third person trading. Get a top then list of people all over the world who could be used to do third person trading. This is when both people send items to the third person and he doesn't ship until both have arrived. I've seen it done and it really helps although shipping sometimes costs a bit more. If your comfortable with sending it to someone go nuts. There have also been other ideas posted that can help like Ebay.

That would be a big relief of hate.

Another that could happen could be a NS court. This is when worse comes to worse. If someone has a big issue with another person and it gets bad they could bring their argument to NS court. Once in NS court they could fight about their problems with one of the staff as the judge and you could have people spectating the event as it goes down. I dunno how well this idea will work because I just made it up.

And the last thing I can think of would be a NS event that could be held every year at some mountain, or maybe a few, one in Canada and the United States. This would help bring the community together as well as give NS even more media coverage and help people get out there.

That’s about it for now. NS is a good place, it's a skier place and we should all be damn proud of it and be grateful for the Staff that makes it all happen as well as the people who put down their own money for this site. Hope my views help.

i only post in cults now. they seem to be the closest to the old NS when it comes to just talking with people.

as for people bitchin, i think they just take there e-pride a little too far and they need to realize that and relize this is a skiing website. Newschoolers is the epicenter for most of us on skiing pop-culture and skiing information so there is going to be some shit to shift through and there are going to be peoples opinions you dont agree with.

As for changing it to get around this, i dont see much you can do. Removing the post count has been a hot topic for a long time but i dont feel that will change anything. 90% of the people here probably dont even notice post counts. I dont, if you post is retarded, im going to say something if you have 20 posts or 10000 posts. Stupid is univerisal.

Bascially I think you guys are doing a great job with the site, its really grown up and as it grows (like all systems) the problems get more complicated and so do the solutions. Just let people deal with themselves and their e-pride. If jacob doesnt want to be a member, no one is forcing him to be one. Let him go. I see lots of old NS member names down the side of the online list so something must still be working because they are still coming back after all of these years.

the post count is both good and bad. It acts in a way, a way to convey seniority. There are many good members who have 3500 posts that were for the most part, good helpful posts. There are on the other hand memebers who post whore just to get the high post count.

Many new members come to this site and have a question or two sometimes PM a older mmeber, this has been the case many rimes with me.

I really like my idea of the reputation and point system, i like the post count ticker thjogh. I may need some revision, like you can lose a post count if you thread get a negative raitng.
 
There needs to be some kind of punishment/reward system for members. Lets face it, there are certain members that do nothing but cause more trouble than they might be worth- Bhill (and I don't care if he is a huge donator), Lord_prophet, Dspin7x (haven't seen him in a while), and 12parkrat60 (all his posts are negative, especially his photo comments) just to name a few. If we had some kind of rating system or petittion system to kick people off, people might actually think before they engage in useless flaming and negative posts. It would be good to start a separate forum for "member relations" (so as to keep it out of non-ski gabber) where people could pettition to temporarily ban members it would really improve things. After so many times of being temporarily banned (with increasing amount of time banned each time), these members could be permanently kicked out.

For the positive aspect, put in some kind of rating system where members can be rated as good or bad and display this info by thier post count/avatar.
 
this is an awesome idea...give people who are creating the threads and posting the pictures the power to delete negative things said in that thread or commentary. it sounds really hard to make work...

all the hating needs to stop..all these people saying negative shit need to be booted on the spot. that will show them. and then next time they make a new account and start talking shit again...boot em again. you cant control how people speak or when...but you CAN tell them to get the fuck out and stop talking.

NS is aweomse the way it is..but i think after some changes it could be a whole lot better.

i can just come on my computer. log into ns, and sit here for hours...ignoring the homework,the chores, eating....all that stuff doesnt matter after i log in.(wow that was corny)

i think this issue has been blown way out of proportion. it is just the internet after all, and people need to learn how to take things with a grain of salt. assholes are gonna be assholes, and people are still gonna think they're funny when they're not. there's not much that can be done about that. that being said, there are a few things that could make the user experience better:

-(MY BIGGEST GRIPE) DON'T LET PEOPLE MAKE ALIASES! prevent people from making them in the first place, and delete the existing ones. for some reason, people think aliases are funny. every other forum i frequent does not allow multiple accounts, thereby reducing confusion and all that other crap.

-stop the search bar crap, forums are here to help people, so do it.

-thread rating system

-warnings for offending members, solely based on the discretion of admins/mods. certain # of warnings=bannage.
 
i've only been a member for like a month or something and i love ns so far but the haters and post whoring is pretty crappy and kinda confusing when you first start reading the forums.
 
maybe its just another web blog and as stupid as some people get you cant change peoples opinions so you might as well let them express themselves... who knows what they say might be so stupid you can laugh at them over the internet. if people want to leave, let them, thats their choice, if they dont like that a website is changing because there are more members, what ever.. to me,more members just shows that skiing is getting bigger. come on, its not like if you read a bad post you are going to die. NS is just something to do instead of homework

I think ns is good, i just don't think about all the hate. altough sometimes i can get a bit irriteted when. we have like one group of haters, and then another one with hate haters. thats to much hate!
 
May I suggest IP bans also? there are people on this site who are only here to defile the quality of life of NS, and those people deserve to be completely banned, for life.
 
The NS searchbar is possibly the most useful skiing tool on the internet. I agree that some sort of automated message sent to every new member with tips, explanations and a diagram of the searchbar would be extrememly helpful to everbody. One thing that would enhance the searchbar would be an option to search the entire site, not only by forums, news, pictures, etc.
 
so far its seeming like most ppl are likeing IP Bans/one name per IP addy, A sort of karma/rep system, i made a good post about that here and in the donaters forum, and more noob help. i like the first time user help popups.
 
I think the member karma thing may be a good idea, if you figure out a good way to make it work.

also maybe you could make the cults more public. like a listing and a hopepage for each one so people can request to join. that way we can go to a cult and get help from people that will answer in a helpful way.

having one main forum is bound to be clogged with lots of usless spam and bullshiting. Thats just the way it is.
 
i guess we finally have to write down the unwritten rules that all the veterans abide by...or maybe take away post privledges until you've been on the site for a week or two and figure out the vibe

stuff like

don't rate your own video a 10, don't make compycat threads, don't respond to sketchline, "if you think its obvious, use the search bar"

MAKE SEARCH BAR BETTER

i think the search bar is also part of the problem, it only searches the titles of threads and searches the titles not by keywords, but if you search for "xgames gagnier" it searchs for the combination of those (threads that have "xgames" followed by "gagnier" instead of xgames and gagnier). if the search was expanded to include threads, and if you could search by member name etc.
 
I’m new to the NS thing (joined just in fall 2005) and have been skiing since I was 3years old. Skiing to me was never about who had the latest what and what trick is popular. Hell, I throw Lincoln loops still. There has definitely been a shift, trend (whatever you want to call it) that kids(not sure what age bracket) are more concerned with clothing and apparel and who’s got what than who accomplished what, what terrain is worth checking out, what terrain parks are pumping. I think that in order to keep respect from the industry, NS should fix a few things... for instance, change ski gabber to skiing news or something of that nature and if posts and threads are negative and out of context... delete them.

Now granted, this would be a gigantic task but with technology today and a little common coding, filters can be set up that remove posts based on certain words, like curse words and derogatory remarks and comments. This could eliminate a large amount of posts and leave NS clean and fresh. (Keep in mind that these filters could always be monitored by NS users as well... set up a “submit something to the filters” if you feel a comment is out of line… and it will be taken care of.

Its a shame to see highly respected skiers who we all look up to see this forum as a joke (in regards to JW) and find no point in sticking around... but we do have to consider that the internet here is not like china and censorship is apparently against some amendment(USA). I would love to see these forums actually discuss current ski topics and ski equipment but I just can’t see that happening when 10-15yr olds feel the need to act very immature just to get a reaction unless a filtering system is established and banning individuals is done.

Now I’m sure this has all be stated before but as more people post comments like these.. It may deter those individuals responsible for ruining this site from posting nonsense (or at least we can hope.)

I obviously "love" NS more than I "hate" it, otherwise I would log on here 5+ times a day and have it as my home page.

The problem with NS is, just as Doug said, that you always have to filter through all the threads and posts to find the useful, constructive stuff.

Basically, the problem is that people simply write too much stupid destructive bullshit.

This is a great question.

First of all, I think that every single post (not thread, post.) should be able to be rated based on how helpful/nice/overall positive it was.

When a member has received a certain number of "bad" ratings (ie 10), a notification goes out to the admins/mods, who are instantly able to see and read these 10 posts and pass their judgement.

If they find the rating to be correct, the member who posted gets one warning.

If it happens again, they get another warning and their postcount is reset to 0.

If it happens a third time, banned for life.

I also think that on every member page, there should be a way for people to vote their general impression of the member. You can only vote for the same person once a month. This way, the mods/admins can see which members are decreasing in ratings, and further explore the reason for this.

Ahh, NS. Where to start?

I love the news you guys post that keep me updated on basically every aspect of the skiing community.

I love a bunch of threads created where the vibe is good. Threads about Skiing/Ski Equipment can be very useful, but NSG threads can also be very entertaining.

I love the media section.

I love cults (BLACK WATCH).

I even love Doug. A little. MANLY.

4)What could happen to make it even better?

Well, maybe slightly better event coverage. Randomized front page.

And the karma/rating system I wrote for question 2.

And pro and member blogs.

And improved searchbar.

I hate the repetative threads. It seems like everyday there will be a new thread about the 06/07 skis, what skis should I buy, what is Tanner's song from this segment, etc. I hate the fact that Newbs don't have to earn their keep. On many other forums, new members have to have a minimum number of posts before they can post pictures or create threads. I hate that you could create a thread one morning and by the evening its 3 pages back but there are 2 news ones on the front page on the exact same subject. And most of all I hate the hating. Ironic I know, but the other things are more frustrating than things I actually hate.

2)What are 3 suggestions to fix what you hate?

1. Minimum posts to create new threads. It works in other forums, why not here. It seems like people create an account and the first thing they do is start a thread asking a question that has been answered 10 times before. If they have to have a minimum post count before doing this, chances are they will explore the forums, and hey, maybe discover the search bar, or if not, just find other threads that answer their questions. I think that a minimum of 50 posts must be administered to keep repetative threads low or non-existant.

2. More stickies. And more knowledge of stickies. The 06/07 ski pics thread needs to be a sticky. There are so many questions about new skis, if people just went to the Ski Equipment Forum and saw it at the top, that would help greatly. Secondly, each year, Hugeairkid, who is wicked awesome btw, updates his "Complete Soundtrack List" which is already a sticky in the Media & Arts Forum. If you can't find the name of a song from a segment there, you won't find it. Problem is, not many people know it exists. Make it a resource, make it a quick link, I don't know, but it has to be more well known.

3. More moderation. Yes, I know its difficult. But threads entitled "TANNER HALL SUCKS" for example, should be deleted as soon as possible. While some people may agree with the statement, blatent hate like that can't be tolerated. If you feel that Tanner Hall's skiing doesn't live up to the hype everyone gives it, fine, but just making obnoxious statements, which in turn encourage everyone else to make obnoxious statements in return doesn't get anywhere. Besides pissing people off. I know you mods have a tough time with things, and I fully appreciate the work you are doing, but with a community this big, perhaps you need more help.

3)What do you love about NS?

I love NS. As much as I complain, there are still reasons why I am on here pretty much every day. I love the news sections, the SIA coverage, the Park Updates, the downloads section now with desktop backgrounds (put all previous front pages up if possible!). I love the pictures and videos and I love the Cults. I love that I can come on here and find out pretty much anything I would want to know about a resort I've never been to or skis I've never skied. If you search hard enough you can find enough information to make very informed decisions on buying skis or planning trips. I love the event coverage, the contests, it goes on and on. I love NS.

4)What could happen to make it even better?

Better event coverage. Better and more news. It was a shame you guys didn't offer coverage of the US Open and X-Games like you did in 2005, but I'll forgive you. Just hopefully it will improve in each coming year.

I also think it might be useful adding a FAQ Forum. Something for new members to check out first. Only Mods and Admins should be able to create threads, but it should answer questions about the site and skiing itself. Links to popular or useful threads like the above mentioned "Complete Soundtrack List" and "06/07 Skis" as well as other stickies. Links and explanations of the Resources, Cults, Pics/Videos section and NS Radio. I also think trick tips, threads started by Mods/Admins, but added to by all members, would reduce clutter in the Ski Gabber. Obviously a "Rules and Regulations" thread should be the top sticky with only Admins allowed to post within it.

Hopefully some of the suggestions I've made will help out on this. A lot of hate comes from frustration, and obviously keeping that to a minimum is good. Besides that, Live like Bunnies.

I hate the Shittalking and the bashing in almost every thread. People can't have respect to each other.

The real problem isn't about how NS is made, sur you can add more power to the mod to delete stupid thread and remove the post count.BUt the real solution is in the hands of the users of ns.com it's the people that post stupid thigns that causes the hate.There is still the 18+ or I don't know forum but then how could you know the age of the member it could be easely useless.But there is definatly a problem of maturity in those forums.

Almost everything, The Media section is great,the forums(cults included), I love the NS radio, the park update is so great, that's usefull, the news section, the giveaways. BUt the thing I like the most is the feel of a freesking community where you can meet people that like the same thing as you and that you can eventually meet. With NS i've talk to people from Alaska to Switzerland,got to meet nice people. That why NS.com is so addicting.

4)What could happen to make it even better?

Give a new life to the Resources Area, like the review and article section, develop this one too, there should be a trick section again.

Personally i love NS, it's a great site, where skiers can meet, swap stories and you can just talk to people who share the same passion as yourself, without NS i think i would not know as much as i do at this point (very helpful) It's a place where people give you tips and pointers as well as some good hard criticism.

Yes, the shit talking does get old and unfortunately while there are alot of immature people here, that will continue to go on.. unless there were some tight regulations on what people can and can't say.

I believe if you are going to leave NS, you should not announce it... just leave, no need to create extra stuff in the process of leaving or creating extra attention for yourself, just pack your bags and move on. I also believe if people hate this site so much they would not be on it, obviously they have been stunned by it's addictive power and choose to remain here for a reason.

Thank you for what you have done so far, this site is great and keep it up.
 
I think really the only thing that needs to change is booting people a little bit more readily, obviously there is a non ski gabber forum so that people can talk about other things, and usually they are quite entertaining and interesting ideas that are brought up, I think it is really cool when debates start, just as long as people use proof and research, i think a demerit point system similar to the one used in drivers licences would be really useful, you get points for every time a mod catches you doing a stupid post and flaming without cause. after a certain number of points you are suspended for a week or something, then if you still get more, its a month, then after that you are just kicked off. but if you go for a long enough time without getting any points, your points will go down same as they do with your drivers licence.
 
nice idea, i wnat into the cult by the way, but by making it so if you have 4000 posts you are reenforing the post whoring crazy i think. i have been here for over 3 yrs and i only have 34xx posts, where as you have been here for 2 yrs and have over 4000, there aer members whjo have been here for 4 months that have 5000 posts, i wouldnt call them veterans, you shouls go by join date.
 
there's not much wrong with ns, it's the users so mods don't blame urself.

some suggestions:

-spellcheck option as well as reply button for when replying to threads.

-search button beside the title of a thread, so before someone starts a new thread they can search their title to see if there'd ever been post like yours before.

A lot of the garbage that does end up in the forums and elsewhere. I've said before that there really is some great content, but it can be a hassle to go through it all. It's annoying to see a good thread, and it's littered with shit. Sometimes people post the most uncontributive stuff, just like "lol" and the whole just "fuck you, you're gay" and so on.

You could make a thread and spend weeks just trying to include the useless stuff that is posted.

When going through threads, there is a lot of unecessary babble. It's not to say that what you say in perhaps the non-ski gabber has to be super thorough and well thought out, but many times kids come in and just start posting. Unfortunately, I've really gotten the hang of ignoring it so I can't really give any good examples, but it does exist.

2)What are 3 suggestions to fix what you hate?

Well, lax mentioned this: improve the search bar. The search bar is pretty helpful, but as mentioned it doesn't really include the content of the thread. Perhaps, if I were searching for a thread, but forgot the name of it, it would be pointless to search for the content because that will not appear. Also, give it a more prominent look. It's tucked away in the corner so most kids just overlook it.

Stronger moderation. I'm all for free speach, and I don't mind most threads that pop up, but sometimes, many people's posts just don't have a purpose. They're not funny, not contributive, not provocative (in a good way that is), not meaningful, etc. Sometimes just deleting a pointless little post really doesn't hurt anything. Of course it is mod judgement and discretion, but that's fine if it makes a difference in the overall content.

And no more alias'. They are so friggen annoying. It really isn't comical if somebody creates a name, posts something in all caps, and gets a kick out of it.

I'm not very creative when it comes to solving a problem such as this, but I can agree on some if they appear.

3)What do you love about NS?

Pretty much everything. There is no other place where skiers can mingle (online) with say reps, pros, fellow skiers, and stuff. There is so much content, from around the world really. Sometimes it is a bit slow, but it just gets better. Pictures, videos, news, and just anything are all right here.

Also the regionals are awesome, at least for Washington. over 30,000 posts wooo!

4)What could happen to make it even better?

I know the lives of many are busy, but perhaps more event coverage and the like. I know like two years or something like that ago, NS set up a correspondence thing, where some people had the ability to cover events and stuff, and have them displayed on the front page. That was cool because it really allowed more of a "grassroots" feel at times. It's cool to see event coverage from larger happenings such as the xgames, usopen, etc, but it is also cool to see the local comps. Perhaps if members, at least ones that somehow can show some maturity or something, are allowed to post more than just stuff in forums, it could add even more diverse content.

Also, I like the park updates feauture, but initially it was just for places such as Blue Mtn and Whistler. They don't really have an effect on most people, so it would be cool to allow (aside from the sponsor issues if there are any) some people to post more park updates. It wouldn't necessarily have to be on the front page, but a nice section, like the one already made for park updates, where some members could post updates to more parks.

The karma/rating idea is pretty good. Unfortunately, too many would either boost their friends or idols, and some would slam people they just don't care for. I'm not sure how it could be done, but somehow have a system for a karma rating. It would be cool if done right.

As mentioned, more moderation. A full plate already, but perhaps recruit a couple more ;).

The warning system mentioned has a good sound to it.

NS is awesome. I've been coming to this site for over 4 years (8 months of which I hesitated to become a member for reasons i dont understand). I don't stop coming here. There is so much going on, and it is great. It has a unique feel, espeically the forums. It isn't the standard crap you see everywhere else. Much of the website is unique in my mind.

I just wouldn't want to see NS become so big that it cuts off the smaller guy (I don't know quite what I mean when I say that)

It would be cool to see many features be opened up to more people, but with rigid control if possible, instead of just pros and reps and stuff having the ability.

Also, many feautures need to be fixed, but if they are being fixed, then there isn't much need to go into that.

It's Ok to clean up a lot of the spew that is poured into the forums and stuff. It would suck to see sooo much control, but more than now seems fine.

All and all, the site rocks. "Leaving" the site has never crossed my mind, and this recent bandwagon is pretty lame, but hey, if it leads to an improved NS, that's fine with me.
 
OK so first thing I dont ski but i love the site i enjoy the sport i just dont do it and i am very new to the site so i dont have much that i can really say to change anything or whatever.....

however onething that i would change is in the non-ski gabber section there is a thread about girls of some sort it has over 150 pages and in my opinion even in that section of the forum it has no business on a site that is dedicated to manly young people in there early teens what in the world does it have to do with anything related to skiing anyway yeah there are a few pics of skier chicks but that really means absolutely jack....

the only other thing that i can say is like in most of the other posts get rid of the thread count it serves no point accept to give people a reason to call me for instance a "n00b" which in all actuality is true but they call my husband that too and he has been skiing for longer than i have known him and that is going on 8 years now so i think that that really needs to go anyway thanks for letting me rant i hope that people are really reading this and taking it all into perspective
