Official NFL 2012-2013 Thread

From CBS sports

"The average American male lives to be almost 75. According to the Times report, an NFL player, whose career lasts roughly four years on average, lives to be 55. The more years a player spends in the NFL, the more games and practices he survives, the quicker he dies."

Found a couple other places saying

"According to the NFL Players Association, the average life expectancy of an NFL player is 58 years of age."

Looking as if its the same shit, different decade. Mean, I'm used to anything-but-perfect records but still. Get your shit together, guys.

god awful time management by the eagles on that drive. i understand that they are kind of no huddle and shit, but vick and maclin cost them EASY 40-60 seconds when they stepped out unforced.

hopefully it wont come back to haunt them.

go fucking eagles, its half past 5 am over here and i hate to stay up that long for nothing. 2nd & goal

oh and god damn i didnt put hartline in, have him sitting on my bench.

i would be up 25 but now im fighting to keep ma lead.

The camera angle trolled hard for the giants game. "Oh it's definitely good, wait what the fuck just happened"

funny how we never hear "the guy works so hard in practice" / "the guy is ALWAYS studying" / "he's always the first one there, last one to leave" when talking about Matt Cassel. The most important position in sports and our guy got a huge check on day one and has been coasting since day two.

Good read. Very interesting stuff. I really felt bad for those refs, they were not qualified and not ready for an NFL jump. They did the best they could.

I would kill for the chance to be an NFL official, would be unreal to be on the field with HOFers and professional athletes. Imagine running down the sideline with Calvin Johnson as hes going up for a deep bomb and you're trying to go step for step to call the play. Do I just wanna do that because I have been an official or does that sound awesome to everyone?

yup. im just praying we go for one win this season so we can get the first pick in the draft, and get that west virginia, or the michigan QB. Then we can drive cassel out of KC with flaming torches and pitchforks.

i think he is ok, but one of those guys who are too inconsistent.

kind of like fitzpatrick or vick or matt ryan (yeah he is hot, but come and check back in 5 weeks).

they have these flashes but the moment teams are scheming for them and/or people expect more from them than just managing the game, they seem like they cant live up to the hype.

fitzpatrick at the beginning of last year, vick in 2010 and cassel also in 2010 --> straight awesome, but they cannot follow it up.

good game by the broncos, slayed the raiders... so much for mcfadden running all over our D, he got like 40 yards total..

excited for next weeks game, manning vs brady. always good especially now that mannings in a bronco jersey and our loss to the patriots last year in the playoffs..

LET'S GO BRONCOS!!!

Geno Smith: 141/169, 1728 yards, 20 TDs, and 0 interceptions. He is having one hell of a year!

wat? that would be a perfect passer rating (NFL method) with a TD more and some 400 yds or so more.

how many games? i would guess 4-5?

4 games, albeit against pretty shitty teams with the exception of Baylor. This weekend WVU vs. Texas will show if they are for real or not.

Raiders shit the bed this week. I hate when they just stop trying. After Denver scored on their opening drive of the 2nd half the Raiders just quit. They need to get healthy. They were missing their two starting receivers (Jacoby Ford is out for the season), I have no idea why Smith was starting at RT because he sucks, and the secondary is fucked with Spencer out forcing Huff to play corner.

However that being said I'm still optimistic. The last time they went to the Super Bowl they started off 2-4 and then went 9-1 the rest of the way. To do that they need to change some things up.

1. Stop fucking around with McFadden. When McFadden is good is when you rush him 20+ times a game and in all situations. They've become so worried about him getting injured that they don't use him enough

2. Run the ball more. Not just with McFadden. Use Goodson and use Taiwan Jones. Jones is the fastest guy in the league, hands down, no contest, and they don't use him except on punt coverage. I swear all they do now is run it on 1st half the time and every down after that they pass. They need to mix it up. If I can tell that they're going to run it or use play action then that means so can every defensive player and coordinator in the NFL. They're not fooling anyone.

3. When they pass it they need to get back to Palmer's strengths. Timing routes. Little hooks, out routes, anything with a sharp cut. Palmer puts those passes exactly where they need to be. He's great with the long ball too but you can't throw it long to Denarius Moore if he is the only threat on the field. Other teams will double team him all day long if Heyward-Bey isn't in the lineup and the only other guy you target THE ENTIRE GAME THE FULLBACK.

4. Stop using Reese as your first choice receiver. He's great for a couple 20 yard catches a game but when that's the only person you throw it too (especially on painfully obvious plays when they motion him out wide and try and throw a bubble screen. Seriously, everyone saw that coming). Target Myers more (I know Palmer has been but they've all been short useless routes). Use Ausberry and Gordon. They have good tight ends (especially Myers. I think he's going to be something special) but nobody knows if you don't throw it to them.

5. Use the receivers. I know the receivers are hurt but Palmer has to throw it to Hagan and Streeter more as long as Heyward-Bey is out and Moore is the only receiver you target. Hagan and Streeter are both good. Criner is good too but they don't use him that much.

Bottom line is they need at variety to their offense. Balance it out more. Spread the ball around. Run it. Get some yards in the passing game. 6 yards on a hook route is good but don't follow it up with an obvious pitch that loses 4 yards or two deep bombs in a row with no hope. I think they can do it if Allen can wake the offense up

idk. i kind of agree with him. palmer certainly can still do some things, but he isnt the guy who was a top7 QB or so back in cincy

I definitely agree with that but what he lost in power he gained in touch and timing. If you watch him throwing an out route it's ridiculous how early he throws and it's always in a spot only the receiver can catch it. He's not going to go out there and throw Peyton Manning laser seam passes in between 3 defenders but he is going to give you precision accuracy on those routes to the sidelines and inside hooks

Yeah, that game was ridiculous. I was ready to cry when Tynes kicked the second fg after Reid "iced" him. Off of his foot, it looked perfect.

How nice was it to see Marty/Andy commit to running the rock? I thought for sure that after McCoy struggled in the 1st half, they'd drop Vick back another 30 times. But, to they're credit, they didn't do that. And...despite what the last 14 years would have us believe....they ADJUSTED after 1/2 time, particularly in their protection schemes.

Chipping the ends with Havili, Celek, and McCoy at times worked like a charm. I know chipping isn't exactly a revolutionary concept or anything, but to see the Birds line up in bunch trips, 2 back sets (even in Shotgun) and have skill players tee off initially and allow Dunlap and Herremans to get set and into good position before engaging was a beautiful thing. Basically, after half-time, the Giants front 4 was totally stymied. Granted, they threw a db blitz up the middle (ala JJ) that should've gotten to Vick had the db not tripped over Dunlap's foot....haha. Vick just looked more poised and in control, and overall more decisive. He left the pocket and scrambled for some decent yards when necessary, threw the ball away, and only forced one, maybe two, throws that could've been picked. Definitely progress there, and maybe there's something to the fact that the guy in essence didn't have a preseason.

It wasn't always pretty, but hey....a win against the G-Men is as sweet as a 28-pt. blowout in my eyes. Like you noted, I was pretty baffled by the Gmen's approach down the stretch. I was pretty surprised that after Reid called the timeout that they didn't run another play and try and get in better range. I understand there was the dager of being tackled in bounds, but you have to trust a 2-time SB champ to make a good decision and throw it away if need be. Also, holy shit...the refs made their presence known on that last drive. That PI on Nnamdi was a fucking joke, definitely a clean jam. The definition of ticky tack. Then, fucking Collinsworth had the gull to call the offensive PI a "makeup call" which is ridiculous seeing as how Barton (I think?) fucking tackled Nnamdi from behind. But hey, it worked out, and the reffing was pretty good overall in my eyes, i.e. they didn't slow the game down, and they just let them play.

Last thing....I loved seeing the Eagles run an almost text book WC offense. In the last few years there's been so much emphasis towards the big play and double moves and stretching the field vertically that they've gotten away from it. Vick got rid of the football on average what felt like a solid 1-2 seconds sooner than he had all year. Those quick hitters and little crossing routes and checkdowns to the backs were perfect and clearly left the Giants D gassed. Special shoutout to Havili (and the playcalling) that led to him getting a few carries on those wonky fb trapthingies.

Like was said last night, when the Birds don't turn the ball over (duh....but after a historical pace of TO's through week 3, it was a relief) and strive for more balance offensively, they're a damn good football team.

agree with anything. the eagles are definitely my favourite team in the NFC, and i stayed up until about 6 am to watch them and that second kick looked so perfect from the getgo and i was about to smash something :)

this chipping thing is ridiculously awesome and i like how they adjusted towards this. i remember last year, the chargers chipped suggs when they played baltimore left and right and thats what completely eliminated the opposing team's strength.

thats what you have to do. eliminate the other team's strength. admit that you cannot protect vick with 5 blockers against that pass rush (the giants pretty much did the same against cole and babin and all the fresh guys coming from the bench). on the TD to jackson, they went MAX PROTECT to give vick more time. they were in a split gun with celek at the right end of the line. 8 people in to block, just a 2 man route and it ends up being an easy TD because of maclins and jacksons speed and route running skills. i think they have to do that also more.

and keep on running, although i am not sure this will work if mccoy goes down. i honestly doubt that ANY other back had been able to grind out 100+ yds with that blocking in this game. he is special

agree. in the chargers game it got almost silly how often he threw these comebacks and outcuts out wide where no defender could do anything. and that was with two guys (hagan and streater) who werent neither on the team long nor famous for being above-average receivers.

i kind of forgot that, but you brought it back to my mind. i remember how i wondered what you could do against that. chargers are a zone-heavy team and its pretty tough to defend that shit against speedy receivers and quality throws.

You know why I don't need to? Because the Bengals tossed his ginger ass to the curb because he is washed up. You do remember that even Jason Cambell was doin alright as a raiders qb.

Also, the Begnals proved the only requirement for a Bengals QB is that the hair matches the helmet.

Sorry to nit-pick, but come on....Taiwan Jones is THE fastest player in the league...hands down? That's the definition of homer bias, right there. I can think of three players off the top of my head with faster 40 times (not that that's the be all end all determinant, but it is a tangible measurement of speed).

Also, something to consider: RB isn't all about pure speed. Some of the greatest to ever play the position (Emmit Smith, and Brian Westbrook jump out off top) weren't all that fast (relatively speaking). In this era where OLB's and even some D-ends run sub 4.5 40's, straight line speed isn't enough. Jones played DB until what....2-3 years ago? That's a big transition, and if Oakland is only using him on special teams, there's a reason, such as he struggles hitting holes/making the right reads and cuts, he gets hurt a lot, or he has ball security issues. I dont' know the why's but if they thought he could contribute immediately, they'd try it.

He could be an impact player moving forward (especially as a change of pace back complimenting McFadden's style) especially outside the tackles and/or catching screens and swings, but coming from a weak conference (in Division 1AA/FCS no less) coupled with making the move from D to O (pretty rare, much more common for a WR to move to DB) has probably put him in the "developmental project" category for now. He's young, be patient dude.

You need to watch the kid run. He flies past everyone. I'm not saying make him an every down back but when you have someone with that speed you have to throw him in the mix. He's not going to be a great back, probably not even a good back, but he has the ability to come in maybe 3 or 4 times a game and break one off. Kinda like Jahved Best when he was first at Cal.

As for the homer response when a coach on the Raiders say "This guy is the fastest I've ever seen. He's faster and quicker than McFadden, Heywar-Bey, Jacoby Ford, and Denarius Moore." it usually means he is pretty damn fast

Jason Campbell was doing enough to win. That being said he was throwing for 150 yards a game off of 20 attempts, most of it off of play action because McFadden was lighting teams up. Campbell is one of the best in the league at selling play action. It's pretty easy to throw when teams bite hard on play action because you already have 200 rush yards and it's only the 3rd quarter. Palmer is throwing for twice that amount with a receiving core that is injured and McFadden has only shown up in one game. Bengals didn't kick him to the curb. As I recall they were trying to keep him but he didn't want to play for them.

if I'm not watching ski edits, I'm watching highlight tapes, I'm familiar with the kid, he's damn fast and shifty...freak athlete, no doubt. And, I agree, like I said before I see him more as a change of pace guy and a playmaker, similar to what NO tried to do with Bush his rookie year and less of a every down rb.

I'm not really trying to debate you, but come on...a coach giving high praise to a young player with a bit of hyperbole? Happens every day, doesn't mean it's fact. All I was trying to point out is that you saying he was the hands down, no doubt about it fastest guy in the league was over the top. Chris Johnson (last two years his struggles provide the perfect example of how speed isn't everything), DJack, and even on the Raiders there's a CB that runs like a 4.27 and you mentioned Ford already.

In retrospect, I don't know why I felt the need to call you out about this, but I did, haha.

All I'm saying is that you're wrong and that you only believe that because you're a Raiders fan, ha.

I like this idea. On what grounds though? The eye test? Who "seems" the fastest? Or are we talking measureables?

Game speed. Who looks the all around fastest (40 times can be used as support). Speed in and out of cuts, straight line, acceleration, all of it. Who is the fastest player in the NFL?

(obviously, there might be someone else, lesser known guy, like jones or jeff demps or whoever, but i am talking about people that actually play a significant role already)

i think its very hard to tell who is the fastest. its very hard to compare them (even with video analysis, frame by frame etc) because the situation they are in is different from play to play and so on.

------------------------------------------------------

there are these big, long striders like for example roddy white, vincent jackson, megatron or randy moss. they look slower, but you see that safeties respect their speed.

guys like desean jackson, jamaal charles and chris johnson look faster because the legs are churning like crazy and stuff.

then there is the quickness thing. there is one thing to be straightline fast, and another thing to have quickness in and out of your cuts. welker is a prime example. dude gets catched from behind all the time on the rare GO route catch, but he breaks your ankles on all these short in, out, sit and option routes.

altogether, so like quickness, acceleration and straightlinespeed together, i would say desean jackson, jamaal charles, lesean mccoy, percy harvin and darren sproles are pretty fast when talking about the offensive side.

corners are harder to judge, but i havent seen joe haden, devin mccourty and stanford routt being in trouble against fast receivers all too much.

on another note, i read that vick was faster (measured from tape) than adrian peterson, at least in 2011. a lot of times, you get the feeling that at best one or two guys on the defense could catch vick, so i think he is a lot faster than people give him credit for.

gruden just has his one thing he talks about all game. i like him elsewise, but i wonder how many more times he will say that romo does anything by himself.
