Official mountain biking thread

Just signed up for my first race. Its a 40 mile xc race on mostly fire roads/xc ski trails. Only thing is I’ve never ridden clipped pedals. Would it be crazy to do an endurance race like this on flats?

no ride what your comfortable with.

besides clips are no more efficient than flats

never gone clips but how are they no more efficient? you get to use more leg muscles and you are able to send some rowdier stuff with out getting bucked off the pedals.

From what I understand, some studies claim at a purely power output perspective they are equal due to the amount of energy you expend moving the cranks. That's a limited view of it though, and you can def make the argument clips are more efficient on rough tracks because you don't need to worry about being tossed off. I use both, flats for my fun bikes and clips for my enduro race rig. Switching between helps unlearn the bad habits that clips can instill for jumping/hopping the bike.

The whole bad habit argument with flats/clips is hogwash. I used to think the same thing when I used to be an avid flat rider, but if you can use the clips to help maneuver the bike one way or another, then why wouldn't you? In the end, you can either do it right or not.

I mean speaking from my own experience, when I've been riding clipped in for a stretch I rely on the clips for upward lift in some situations. Can definitely be helpful when needed, but can also mess with balance in the air if I don't change my technique on larger jumps. Switching back and forth with flats helps remedy that, to each their own.

Biked the Revy bike park for the first time today, first resort ever and all. Trails were sick as hell managed to send some decent jump lines and shit. But my bike took a beating, back tire is deflating and leaking sealant. And the derailer was some cheap plastic one the Sram SX, it fucking shook to garbage. Parks are sick though

Revy is so sick, but it's massive and will beat you and your bike up, especially because the trail network on the hill is still growing. If you get a chance, there is so much stuff to ride outside the park too. Boulder mountain, Frisby Ridge, Martha Creek, etc.

Rode Sun Peaks last weekend and was blown away by how good it is. Tons of varied terrain, a lift that runs into the evening and no lines. Then spent a week in Squamish and that's just an entirely different level of riding. Definitely going to be an annual trip.

Thats sick Ive been hoping to bike further west. Sun peaks is on the list but apparently Silver star is super sweet too, smaller mountain but really developed trail with lots of woodwork. We just need this smoke to clear and evacs to settle down

lets go!!

so looks like you are too much over the bars. squatting down and over the rear will make it easier to pivot on that rear tire. with a cassette you can use forward pressure as well. once you turn to like 40-45 degrees then you wanna

snap the other direction with the bars and use the forward pressure.

also will be good to just practice riding backwards. you dont really want any lean. body nor bike. most the steering comes from subtle movements in the bars. again wanna be pretty centered or slightly over the rear tire.

last, might be easier to practice popping out of fakie on a slight slope off of a curb or wall as opposed to airing out of the bowl. then bring it to the bowl and boom you’ll get mad bitches (or whatever your into. dont cancel me)

switching to TRPs on my bikes, got a pair of code rsc’s and 220 centreline 6 bolts used on 5 laps literally brand new I’m about to post for sale if anyone in here wants em im willing to let ‘em go for a fair price

so for work I need to start carrying my radio when im doing my observations. i dont want a chest mount. was thinking about doing the ol fanny pack. i think it would be dope to have one bolted on where the waterbottle holder is. is that a thing?? i cant find it online lol

This (https://unchartedsupplyco.com/products/park-pack) is my go-to bike pack when I'm looking to keep it a bit lighter. It would be pretty easy to put the radio in one of the water bottle holders. Or they're attached by micro molle, so you could swap one out for an actual radio holder. The main compartment is waterproof and it's built rock solid.

Cop a 3d printer and the world's your oyster

I literally just messaged someone i know with a 3D printer about this lol. i feel like our bike patrol team would love it too

You could pretty easily make one, it would just have to withstand a lot of shaking.

If I had to carry a radio for work on my bike, without having to carry a full pack like Patrol, I'd get one of these and strap the radio into it, so it's handy, but you can pull it off and on the bike easily.

You could rig some sort of holster with a ski strap on the frame maybe? Sleeker option is wolftooth b-rad strap, I use one that bolts to my top tube and holds a small waterproof bag for flat repair and safety kit

Caught [tag=1388]@skierman[/tag] riding this on A-line at whistler last weekend. Spotted the sun reflection off that forehead from 3 KM away.

Thats nice dirt you've got there, where is this?

Cuyuna, Minnesota. Pretty shit riding compared to anywhere outside of the Midwest, but for here it isn’t bad. Red dirt because the trails are built on an old iron pit mine.

It's how you can make 3" feel like 8

Why you gotta tell on yourself like that ?

Aaanyways. Aaah, this rain has made the trails soooo good after a whole summer of dust

It ain't the length of the stroke, it's how the ride feels. Gotta play with the cards your delt playa ?

More travel, you dumb fuck.

After a quick google, I found this posted by a Karpiel rider:

" The second thing most people get confused is this, the second air shock is NOT a blow off shock. It is there to work with the back shock to prevent harsh bottoming. It is activated about a 2/3 of the way through the travel."

So it essentially works simultaneously with the other shock, not adding more travel.

Maybe do some research before calling people dumb fucks.

LOL trusting random sources on the internet. Great strategy.
