Driving my parents old truck out to a family friend in Charlotte North Carolina. Is it worth bringing a full face and pads to rent a bike?

lowkey fell outta love with biking this summer. don’t get me wrong it’s been fun but just doesn’t give me that same feeling it used to. maybe the fall will change that

Damn I’m stoked on biking rn. Probably gonna keep riding through the ski season tbh

I found riding in different areas and new trails helps a lot with keeping biking fun and fresh. Also sessioning features is fun as hell

I don’t think there’s any biking that warrants a full face in that area lol

Anyone here ride with CushCore?

Yeah, running it for about 2 years now. Worth the downsides because I frequent fucked-up chunky East Coast bikeparks like Creek and Shoe, haven't had a single flat with them in that time. I've grenaded multiple wheels (which obviously led to flat tires) but never flatted a tire without severe bead-destroying rim damage. Also being able to runflat back to the parking lot is nice if you're halfway down a 1000+ft vertical run.

If you want the best armoring against flats and don't care how much it affects the weight and handling of the bike, highly recommend.

If you care about climbing and/or being able to gracefully pick lines and jib/hop around, might want to opt for the XC version or a lighter insert entirely. Or just rock an insert in the rear and keep the front end regular tubeless for more nimble handling.

Noticeable increase in rotational weight for each insert you add. Makes the bike want to straight-line more but does increase stability. Whips feel different. Turns feel like they take longer to initiate and exit because you're fighting the rotating mass. (like trying to tilt a gyroscope)

Recently only been rocking one out back, plain tubeless up front, so far so good.

Might throw an XC up front just for the peace of mind, didn't have to care about sharp rocks with inserts at both ends, but now it's at the back of my mind when I'm boss hogging through the rough stuff.

Also, ignore everyone who says inserts are a pain to install. Just heat it up in the sun the first time, and give it a good stretching beforehand. One side of the tire bead goes on normally, then slip in the cushcore, then mount the other side tire bead. Easy as.

Got my dream build feeling dialed - at a point where I don’t want to upgrade anything anymore. Frame and most components (except wheels) purchased used from PB helping to keep the cost a bit down.

Monster trucks through chunk but is surprisingly agile. Also just moved up to Leadville CO, so any summit county folks want to rip hit me up!

Im looking for a bike

I started mountain biking this summer, and have been riding my sisters Marley steel hardtail. I need to get a bike, but I am not sure what I am looking for. I loved the hardtail, but I still feel like I would end up getting a full suspension.

I like an aggressive geometry, about 130-170 travel in the front, 0-110 in the back if I decide on a full suspension. I am about a medium frame and my budget is around $1500. I ride mostly enduro style trails, please let me know if you have any recommendations!! Used, new, etc or just places to shop.

Thanks!

You definitely should look into the used market, and probably would be looking for something like a specialized stumpjumper, trek fuel ex, giant trance, scott genius, etc.

pinkbike.com buy/sell is your friend. I'd start there! Looking on fb marketplace is also good. Try to find a bike newer than around a 2016 model year, bikes older then that generally have archaic geometry.

Thanks for the advice, I have looked on pinkbike and I feel like some of the bikes on there may be overpriced, but correct me if I am wrong. Do you have any favorite models that you would recommend to me?

What PSI are you running? What rims are you currently on/what have you broken?

Bikes have been like cars in the pandemic. Used ones going for new prices and long waits for new Bikes. It's just starting to normalize again. So yes, lots of overpriced Bikes out there.

However, if you can up that 1500 to about 2k, you will probably get a lot more for your money... and I would have said the same pre-pandemic. Not everyone is out to rip people off, there's definitely solid deals on Pinkbike.

Don't worry too much about brands. Nearly everyone makes a solid bike now. You should probably look at aluminium frames, as they'll be much cheaper than carbon.

The ones I listed are good recommendations, norco fluid is another one I just thought about.

as for overpricedness that can be something that’s hard to get around but there’s good deals out there.

Last year I a raceface arc 30 offset, year before a stans flow mk3, this year a spank 359 is on it's last legs. I'm like 240lbs, run about 32psi in the rear, and smash through bullshit I probably shouldn't.

If you live near PA I will be selling my wife's liv embolden soon. She didn't like mountain biking as much as she thought she would and wants to just stick to road biking.

I ride with a bunch of super tall+big guys and we've put a lot of wheels through the absolute wringer.

Definitely avoid anything 28 spoke. Warranty policy is very important for us bigger guys.

me:

Stans Flow D - Became noodles after a season. Spoke tensioning doesn't hold. Avoid. Never buying riveted rims again.

Stans MK3 - Wobbly beyond repair but still rideable after a season. Cheap, decent. Recommend MK4 for a tight budget.

Formula (anything) - Failed at the weld. Avoid at all costs.

friends:

E13 cheap rims - Complete butter. Avoid.

E13 midrange rims - Better but still wouldn't recommend

I9 Enduro 305 28spoke - Didn't last very long. Would avoid for bigger riders.

I9 Enduro 305 32spoke - Durable, high quality. Expensive but built well.

DTSwiss EX511 - Holding up well. Will probably be my next rims if I don't go carbon.

I was probably gonna try an ex511 or ex471 next. Idk I may use my Polis Payday™ for a carbon hoop if it means I can go on a single ride without chasing spoke tension afterwards.

Dt Swiss ex1700 are the most reliable aluminum wheels I've used (I believe same rim as ex511 but built as complete set). They didn't lose much tension or dent after brutalizing them at enduro races and bike parks for 5 months. If you can afford it though, I think carbon 32h rims are the way to go. The economics line up after paying to replace around two aluminum rims + labor. A lot of brands have lifetime warranties on their carbon rims now too, this year I splurged and went for Nobl TR37s which have been awesome so far - stiff, relatively lightweight and have stayed true bashing them in the Rockies this summer.

Tearing others down will never build you up.

What was that saying again? Oh yeah. Fuck you and your feelings, snowflake.

Aww, is the little snowflake upset that NS isn't an echo chamber like Truth Socials or Facebookies?

What was that saying again? Oh, right. If you don't like it, you can leave.

Isn't it hilarious when Trump's supporters get upset when you use their insults on them? Get a thicker skin, you pathetic child.

False, Highland is mostly flow trails thats why i prefer Killy.

Just wait til you find some of the rake and ride lines at Highland. Great flow trails, but definitely not lacking in the more natural stuff.

Near harrisburg. I was hoping to get $1600 out of it. It's a 2021 liv embolden 1, has not more than 150 miles on it I'd guess.

Sram brakes drive me nuts. I'd rather bleed my Saints and Zee's a little more often than deal with the myriad of issues and weird feel I've run into on multiple sets of SRAMs.

Dude those shimano zees are so good. I’ve bled mine maybe twice in owning them for 2 and a half years

Rode the park city point to point yesterday and finished! 11hr 35min ?. 90degree heat and trails as blown out and dusty as i’ve ever seen in PC made it a fuckin grind. Really cool to push the body and brain past the limit like that though, highly recommend the race to anyone who likes big days on the bikeIf
