Official mountain biking thread

So far this year, the biking has been fantastic. Finally went over to American Fork Canyon in Utah here and rode some trails I've been meaning to, turns out there were trails I now consider my favorite I've ridden in Northern Utah. I'll have to head back soon.

Got a whole summer ahead of me in the leadville/bv/salida area, any trail suggestions?

Monarch ctrest for sure. Crested butte ain't that far from you either (relatively speaking, it's far from everything lol but you're closer than most) and there some legendary trails around there too! They also have a bike park at the resort

I'm selling my 2018 Bronson! Bronson C, S build kit, Large. One of a kind with a custom decal kit. Like new condition. Upgraded XT Brakeset and rotors, brand new stock wheelset, tires and chainring (all immediately swapped out at building), I purchased it around a month ago and have maybe 100 miles tops on it (aka you get a nearly new bike and get to avoid the annoying break in period where things need to be readjusted). Only selling because I'm going a different route with bikes and don't have room for this one anymore/need money.

Only asking 4250 obo, which is 15% off retail before all the ugraded parts, for a pretty much brand new bike. Thats way cheaper than any shop can sell them

Check out the pinkbike add for full details, 4250 obo:

Any recommendations for great trails in Colorado? I’ve been exploring around golden and have done green mountain and centennial cone. Both super fun but just curious if anyone else has fun ones.

Dakota Ridge is the most technical trail I've ridden in the area and has some nice jumps and drops. Lair O the Bear has the most flow and rides like WP trails.

If anyone is looking to buy an extremely well spec'd long travel carbon 29er, i am selling mine. this is a fucked up good deal and i cant believe it hasnt sold yet!

$2500

For sale is my beloved medium Niner Rip 9 RDO. This bike is an awesome and extremely capable long travel 29er that pedals uphill effortlessly, and loves to go downhill. I got this bike brand new last spring, as well as all of the components.

Frame: medium rip 9 rdo carbon

Fork: Rockshox Lyrik rct3

Shock: Rockshox Vivid Air rc2

Brakes: Sram Guide Ultimate (brand new ultimate lever installed for front brake as of May 23, 2018)

Drivetrain: Sram XO1 eagle with Wolftooth oval 28t ring (new chainring and chain installed May 2018

Bottom Bracket: Sram GXP (new installed May 2018)

Cranks: Sram XO1 eagle carbon

Wheels: Stans Flow MK3 (with Cush core installed in rear)

Bars: truvativ Stevie smith black box 780mm

Stem: truvativ decsendant 40mm

Dropper post: Rock Shox reverb 125mm

Seat: SQ labs

Tires: Vittoria Mota 2.35” front, Vittoria Martello 2.35” rear

I recently installed new brake pads, new chain, chain ring, bottom bracket, and tires. I also removed and cleaned the lower link and bearings. As you can see in the photos, there are a couple blemishes that do not effect the performance of the bike (cosmetic). The paint is chipped on the top tube from another bikes brake lever rubbing on it while on a bike rack, as well as a couple little paint chips on the rear triangle. The rear rim as a small dent in it, but it holds air without issues, and the Cush core inside helps protect the rim. I have never got a flat tire on this bike.

I also have another 2 Cush core inserts I will throw in so you can run one on the front tire, and still have an extra. I will also include a used Maxxis Minion DHF II 2.5” with plenty of life left in it.

Only trades i am interested is for a Dual sport dirtbike (ideally a 250). thanks!

So, looking for advice

We booked plane tickets to Vancouver for 6 days in the middle of September, with no other real plans than to ride bikes. We basically just want to ride the best trails we can in the Vancouver/Whistler/Squamish area, while doing transportation and lodging affordably. I've done a week in Whistler, so I know the trails there, but what are the not-to-miss rides and zones in Van and Squamish, and is it possible to make this happen using mostly public transportation? Any lodging recommendations? Anybody want to trade time on a couch / shuttles for art? Any other helpful tips?

Basically, right now, this trip is a blank slate, and we're just gathering as much info as possible before we nail down any plans. Thanks!

I got to ride Richie Schley's YT Capra last weekend! It's gotta be sub-30 pounds, which is insane for a bike with 170mm travel.

I also got to test out the MRP ribbon air. Absolute smoothest air fork I've ever ridden.

Also also just upgraded my Ibis from 1x10 to a 1x11 for super cheap and I'm excited to be able to actually pedal when I'm going fast.

Also also also, bike park season just started. Love living across the street from lift access trail networks. Gotta sack up and hit our new road gap tomorrow.

Anyone in Panorama BC and want to shred?

I've got Fridays and Saturdays off starting from next week. Inbox me!

Dumping some gear locally in the Seattle area.

2016 V2 Bronson CC Frame Black/Grey size Large with Fox Factory Float X shock. I'll toss in the stock Cane Creek 40 series headset that was never used. Fox shock has less than 50 miles on it. Frame has 588.5 miles exactly on it.

2016 RockShox Pike RCT3 150mm fork. 27.5" wheelsize and Boost spacing; 15mm thru axle x 110mm.

Roval Traverse SL 6Fattie 38mm internal width 27.5"+ Boost 15mm thru axle x 110mm front/12mm thru axle x 148mm rear Carbon Wheelset with Purgatory/Ground Control tires.

Enve 60/40 HV 27.5" Boost 15mm thru axle x 110mm front/12mm thru axle x 148mm rear wheelset with Industry 9 Torch Hubs.

I also have an overabundance of brand new RockShox Maxles; both normal 100mm and Boost 110mm.

Hit me up with questions. I'll have some pictures posted this weekend.

How in the fuck has this not sold yet?!

...curious, what are you replacing it with; the bike you're modeling on a certain shop's website?

I actually sold it last week! I’m actually in the process of building up a newer version of the same bike. New parts, size small. New color. Stoked.

How tall are you? Why size small?

im a pretty insecure dude by nature, my sister got a new stumpjumper and lended me her trek marlin 7 to learn on. How'd you folks get over fear and insecurities when learning to ride? I had a BMX background as a kid and having a hard time warming myself up.

Just ride as much as you can. Going with people who are better than you helps tons, start small and build the confidence.

Riding the same trail a bunch of times helps a lot to build confidence too, just try to go slightly faster/bigger, and more aggressive lines as your confidence slowly builds.

yall are the best and thank you a ton for the advice. I live right off of some trails that feed into a state park that ive been lapping religiously in the past week. Its got some decent climbs and pretty fun but narrow ways down. I found a really sweet section yesterday and then this evening, found an absolutely killer snake run that was challenging but a damn good time. Biking is starting to become a favorite next to skiing and feel like progession on bikes is good for progression in any sport, mentally-speaking.

I’m moving out to bend Oregon next year and I’m gonna be getting a new bike this year, I’m wondering if 170/160 travel on a bike would be over kill? I would be mostly riding trails and my bachelor a bit. The other option would be to get a 140/130 trail bike. If anyone lives in the area I would love some tips.

I’ve got the Marin Attack Traik Pro that’s 160/150 and if you’re planning on doing trails and bachelor a bit I’d say this travel has worked well for me in everything. It allows you to be efficient enough while riding and is very cushy on the way down.

If you want something bigger I think that Canyon offers a 170 mm travel trail type bike without the dual crown fork so it’s not a bad option for more downhill oriented but a little cheaper.

Ok sweet, I think I will go for the 170 enduro bike I would rather have a little much for some trails but be comfortable on the rowdy stuff, how long would it take to bike from downtown bend to the trails?

Personally, for what you're describing, I'd look an "enduro" bike in the 150-160mm range (rear travel). 130-150 if you're going for 29" wheels. The only 170mm (or more) bike I've (personally) ridden that I'd also consider trail-worthy is the YT Capra but unless you get the top end build, it's got some weight to it. If you do mostly bike park and a little trails, then 170mm would be ok. But if you ride trails regularly, i'd go 150-160.

Ok makes sense, the 170/160 bike was looking at was the commencal meta ax v3, which seems like a okay bike for climbing but amazing on the decends, could you check it out and tell me if you think it would be good for around bend?

It has already been said, but 170 is over kill for trail, that extra weight is not worth it.

Ok makes sense, but do you think 130/140 would be to little, I think it would be perfect for trails but not so much for bachelor

Full disclosure: I ride a hardtail with only 100 in the fork. This is to little but still manage well with my utter cheapness. 130/140 is more than I would need, key word there being "I". Just my personal preference.

can you afford carbon? my tracer (170) weighs ~27 lbs and climbs trails like a champ! a lot of my friends are riding the new slash on mostly trails and loving it!

I wish I could afford carbon, I’m barely going to make 2000 this summer so just enough to buy a decent enduro

Are you buying brand new or used? If you saved up another 1000-1500 you could get a really nice secondhand whip on pinkbike.

This. Bikes on Pinkbike are a steal and while it’s nice buying a new bike, it’s a lot more reasonable to get a nicer used bike for the same price. I was able to get mine off of Pinkbike used as a demo bike for one season for $2000 flat and it’s done everything I need, very high quality bike.

I’m most likely buying new unless I find something I really like that’s a good deal

I want the new commencal clash soo bad. Base model is very well priced but I'll probably pick up the essential just because of the lyrik over the pike. Gonna be my park bike because I just lap the jump lines :)

I've ridden that bike. Totally overkill for the flowy trails of Bend.

Why buy new? If you have a tight budget, your money will go sooooo much further if you get a used bike. I can't afford to buy new, but thanks to Pinkbike, I picked up a sick custom 2013 Ibis Mojo HD w/ 2016 suspension that came with an extra wheelset for $2200 last year. I also got my DH for $1200 and been rocking it for 4 seasons now. Lots of people on Pinkbike will buy a new bike, customize it, then sell it again the next year for cheap so they can get the newer version.

Yeah really no point in buying a new bike for sure. My last bike was a rep demo that was ridden 3 times and looked brand new, but was 3k off of retail price.

Even one that's more used, you'll still get a killer deal even if you have to give it a full tune up.

Ok I will probably go for a mid travel trail bike then , have you ridden a bike with around 140 travel at bachelor if so how did it feel?

I definitely should probably buy used but I like the thought of being the first one to ride it and knowing it’s in perfect condition and I won’t find problems shortly after buying it.

New bikes are a terrible investment unless you have access to pro deals. Otherwise, I wouldn't get into the new bike game unless i had enough skrilla coming in to be in the new car game as well lol

The cost of fixing any of those supposed problems will still be far less than the difference in buying a new bike versus used haha

That’s probably true I’ll look into it

Buying used really is the way to go. It’s pretty easy to tell if bikes have any problems before hand.

That being said, I’m selling my Intense Recluse, it’s a medium, might be selling it for a bit out of your price range though.

If you do buy new, I would say buy an Intense, YT, or Commencal. All are somewhat affordable and greatly built.

As someone who lived in Bend for a couple years and rode everything there all the time, all you need is a trail bike. Even for bachelor. Rode everything on my stumpy and my rip 9. Even whistler. Im living back in bellingham now, and i can even ride everything here on my rip 9.

bachelor is a trail bike park. lots of pedaling. not too gnar. being overbiked on bend trails is no fun.

Dope. Just note, if you do go Intense, they kinda run like half sizes compared to other brands in my experience. For example, a medium intense would be somewhere between a medium/large for most other brands. But commencal is great, good luck.
