Official mountain biking thread

Ohh man just got back from an awesome night. I showed up for my usual Thursday night group ride and there ended up being a huge amount of guys out there, kinda those people that are out once and awhile but they were all out tonight. We had a crew of about 30 and rode out to the tops of these hills which are pretty sizeable for being in the Canadian prairies. Pretty cool spot to watch the sunset and see some farmers working the land. Got back to the lot, tailgated, grilled some food up, tilted a few, and had a blast. That's what biking is all about right there.

So I'm probably going to buy a bike from Bellingham, is there an off chance anybody from over there will be headed towards Moscow/Bozeman anytime soon? It's about a 6 hour drive from Moscow to BHam so I'd either like to try to to have it hitch a ride over or I may just road trip out, buy it, camp and ride for a few days, If I do that I'd be stoked to ride with any locals!

Wait actually im trying to go to Seattle/Bham area from Spokane this next Wednesday or Thursday. PM me if you're interested. Also, planning on riding Tiger as well as Galbraith if anyone is trying to get some ripping in then.

Been working on a flowy fun trail. Just finished re-building the in run yesterday. Took 7 hours, but I made this huge S berm in the side of the hill, right before the jump. It flows so nicely.

Here's a sneak peek. My tire was flat so I only got my friend hitting it

Not sure what to do about the landing. First time actually building a large landing, and the angle is a bit wonky. Gona probably do quite a bit of digging to change it from 10 degrees to about 25, since takeoff is 35

Oh yea, and please don't watch anything that YouTube recommends once the video is done, unless you want to hear the 13-14 year old cringe-worthy me

Yeah you definitely want more of a landing there considering how front heavy your buddy landed. Also, consider taking the logs out of those jumps and using just dirt instead. I used to build using a ton of logs, but they rot away and end up not being worth the hassle. Just my 2 cents. Looks fun!

Washington people, Tiger is 100% hero dirt as of this morning. Get on it!

Yea, dirt is the better way to go, but we don't have a wheel barrow yet, and it's just easier for us to stack up a few logs than to carry 50 shovelfuls or so. From my experience, logs do a nice job of holding everything together, and I like how they look :D

Had a super cool ride today up off Snoqualmie Pass. Hansen Ridge/Harris Lake.

The trail has a little bit of everything, and a lot of climbing. Some buff hero dirt, flowy berms, a lot of techy/rocky stuff, lots of loose rock, some killer views. Sweet little lake to take a dip in before you turn around and climb out.

I feel like such a moron having to ask for help on this but I bent my rear derailleur inwards, I think its the black hanger part that has gotten bent but it might be some other bent parts to. Anyone know if its worth trying to bend back or if I should try to replace the part?

most of the time it is the derailleur hanger that gets bent. your local shop should have a compass like tool that helps you correctly bend the hanger back into alignment. if the arm is bent then just go slow and bend it back till it will shift properly again. your mechanic will probably have a tip or two on how to do that.

I told my friend I would skate today but I'm looking for excuses to get out of it so I can go get psycho pitted on my bike.

Biking is taking over everything it's fine

Ok trail builders of NS, how to hell do you guys deal with roots? Seriously it slows any sort of trail digging by a ridiculous amount. I tried digging away into the ground today for a landing and now it looks like a wooden octopus is trying to escape

plz help

Seriously whenever you can possibly use fire constructively, that should always be plan A.

Damn you guys are dangerous

Wouldn't it bad bad for a chainsaw to be spinning around in dirt?

haven't used it myself but this tool has been recommended for dealing with the little stumps. not sure about working on bigger roots.

Doug and i like to live dangerously.

Whats the worst that could happen?

Wait, dont answer that. Okay, whats like the 10th worst thing that could happen?

But seriously, both are solid options if a little common sense is used.

it dulls the chain

rip is much as you can out with brute force, use clippers if you need to. youre not building a skatepark though, roots dont matter that much

I've used chainsaw on quite a few problem roots, its not hard to dig a channel so you aren't in the dirt. I second taking a picture though. Could you maybe build the landing up instead of digging down?

I'm doing a little bit of both, but I can't build up too much higher than I already have. Trying to make a deeper landing angle but also keep a longer landing for higher speeedz

Fire. Kill it with fire.

Or get an axe/pick and get to chopping. It'll make a man outta your candyass.

Just picked this up. Now we get to see if it makes it from Bellingham to Bozeman safely.

So stoked to not be riding DH on a 13 year old hard tail anymore!

How much, curiously? A newer reign would be soo sweet!

$1800, more than I really wanted to spend but the component spec is solid and a little bit of FB stalking gives me the impression that it maybe wasn't ridden super hard.

I've always been on SRAM so I'm interested to see how XT does, as soon as I have a little extra $$$ I'll convert to 1x

I was on a 2010 size Medium reign before so I'm stoked to finally size up to a Large and get a little nicer spec as well.

Nice man that looks a nice bike. Go 1x when you can it's been the best upgrade I made in a long time. Those reigns are fun I nearly got one of the new ones myself.

You coming up to whistler at all this summer. We should ride bikes

Glad you found something you liked. 1x is honestly so much better, especially given how cheap the oneup kit is. Happy riding man

There's a race a few hours away from where I live going down the end of July, 80KM. If I don't have to be all licensed the fuck out to enter than I'm thinking I'll enter...

Do it man although that does sound like a crazy distance if it's in the mountains.

Out of interest anyone else competing? Any slope riders or racers?

im racing the enduro World Series this summer durin crankworx. It's my first enduro (I used to race dh) and it's certainly a little daunting.

So my only riding partner is now in Jackson for the summer. ANYONE IN BELLINGHAM WANT TO GO RIDE TODAY? Tired of riding alone so pm me if u wanna ride. I ride everyday so yeah

Well now I'm bummed. From the posters and page for it, it looked like it was independent of the MCA (Manitoba Cycling Association, local governing body) but it's not. With that I will need to be all licensed up which is about $200, then register for the race which is likely $65... The killer thing is, is that there's usually only one race per year close to my city, then they're all pretty distant like this 80KM race. So it's not really worth it to be like $250+ deep for just one race, then not that better off for others because I'd have to travel and lodge for as well.

It looked to be about a 10K loop with 4K of gravel roads. No idea on the vertical gain because they didn't list it but it wouldn't be too bad as I'm in the prairies. Too bad I won't be there, but I'll sack up and plan a good epic with some buddies for a Saturday or something.

Yeah that is a lot for one race. The ews only cost me $65 whic I figured was ok for racing at crankworx. I'm not licensed so won't be getting any points but I don't think I'll be taking on the likes of Graves this season anyway, that is next year :)

For Manitoba, you can't race in any MCA sanctioned events without their stupid license. I'd be game if you could pay registration, and even have like a one day license that was $40 or something. But no, instead they have their pricey yearly pass. It's okay if you live in Winnipeg where there is a few races a month, but it's way too much for anyone living elsewhere.

Picked up this 2012 Giant Faith a 4 days ago and the Snowmass Bike Park opened 3 days ago. So needless to say, I've been throwing her around the park for the past 3 days and she's made me very sore but happy. If I come into some money soon, I'd like to drop a few pounds off her, but she's super fun and I've never felt more comfortable in the air before on a bike.

Yeah that will be a sweet park bike. I have not got a park pass this year but I'm really wantin to get some dh in soon

If you ever get down to tiger/duthie let me know and we can ride. I might be able to get up there at some point before the end of summer.

I got lucky and my summer bike pass was only $60 unlimited riding for the whole season since I had a "premiere pass" for the winter.

I rode the same park trails on my Turner 5 Spot and felt "good" and had fun, but once I got this bike and a few runs in, it felt "epic" and way more fun. On my Turner, I was scared to hit the bigger jumps. Not the case on the Faith.

Question: Is it normal for a chainguide to feel like there's a bunch of friction from the chain/bottom bracket area while you're pedaling, or is there something wrong in the drivechain area? I've never had a chain guide before, so I'm not sure. Now that I've had time to work on the brakes, it rides fine while coasting. It just feels like there's tons of friction while pedaling and I don't know if that's inherent to the bike style or if a parts) needs to be worked on.

A couple days since now but thanks, had it fixed at the local shop yesterday and it turned out good as new.

New question I guess, I have an 2008 Scott Ransom 40 bike. Before I got it last summer it really hadn't seen much use so it is still in good condition. Now I kind of want to start upgrading parts on it but I'm not sure if its worth to put a bunch of money into a bike this old. The only thing thats not original at the moment is that I replaced the biggest chainring with a bashguard.

If I were to start putting money into it this is what I would like to do, in order of importance: Dropper seatpost, grips, get a 1x10 setup, new tires and go tubeless, new pedals, change out the Equalizer rear shock, new brakes and maybe eventually change out the fork and other parts I could save weight on. Main goals would be to drop some weight and gain performance where I feel I need it, also it would be fun and I would probably lear allot from working on the bike.

I would probably work on this until next year or so since I can't buy it all at once. So what do you guys think, is it worth putting any money into a bike from 08 or should I continue using it as is?

Photo of bike now, hopefully I havn't already posted this.
