Official mountain biking thread

Picked up this old norco frame from my buddy and built it up with spare parts I had lying around and painted it matte black. I rode it around town brakeless for a few weeks but got a sick deal on some juicy 3s at my LBS for $30. Total amount put into it currently is only $65!!!! I also built an obligatory dirt jump for my new dirt jumper

Hey there NS, I've never biked before in my life and I was talking to my buddy about buying his old mountain bike. I can get more information about it tomorrow but all i know is it's a scott and he's invested over 3 grand into it. When we got to talking he said I need to get new brake levers, a 9 speed shifter and also new brake pads. I do know that the bike has hydraulic brakes and is a full suspension but i have NO idea where to start on getting the replacement parts. please feel free to pm me solid websites or ANY links.

Anything helps! also +K for any help. thanks yall!

For that I'd just go to a local bike shop and ask them, they'll be more than happy to help you out! Mountain biking is probabably the best thing you can do in the summer to keep your mind off skiing, and you get to shred brown pow! Definitely give it a try, its a ton of fun once you get over the astronomical costs of it hahaha

been makin that money thanks to a cash job i got myself into, and was thinking of buying a dj for skateparks/dirt jumps, mellow trails. i have a spesh rockhopper, is it worth it to get a cheap dj?

Finally getting closer to getting a new rig, as soon as I do, Washington look out, I'm coming for ya Duthie and Gailbraith!

What are you looking for in particular? I have tons of friends that are constantly flipping bikes, and I can keep an eye out for you.

I would usually be looking used but I miiiiiiight be going new through work. Looking for something in the 150-160mm range, preferably 27.5, basically an "enduro bike"

I've ridden my uncles trance 27.5 and it rips

Cool, Ill be on the lookout. If you would consider building something. I have tons of parts I could let go on the cheap.

I'm looking at buying a Giant Faith off of pinkbike and I found a 2010 Faith for $1200 and a 2012 Faith for $1600. Both are same model (top of the line Faith 0), in great condition, and mostly stock.

I'm torn over which one to go for. Any opinions on which is more worth it and if there's anything different between those years? I have an extremely difficult time finding DH/Freeride bikes, let alone any bike that fit me, so I'm excited to hopefully pick up one of these two bikes and fill in the last piece of my bike quiver I've been trying to fill.

Both those bikes have the same geometry. All else being equal I would go with the newer one. Although the 2012 has the Overdrive head tube dimensions which sorta sucks when looking to upgrade your fork. Have to buy a reducer cup normally.

Yeah I would buy the newer one too. The geometry may not have changed, but the parts will be better and less worn down.

Thanks guys. I knew the geometry wasn't the same, but I wasn't sure if there were any other differentiations to separate the two frame years. $1600 seems like a pretty damn good price for a well spec'd 2012 bike, right? It's more local than the older one, but both are in driving distance.

Sweet man. Ha don't worry, I am all set in the bike department.

I wouldn't shell out an extra $400 for the black one, but I'm cheap. That being said, they are pretty comparable builds, so it really kind of comes down to wear on parts. I would offer $1000 on that 2010 and see what happens.

Also, on a related note, I have a pretty rad 2009 Devinci Frantik frame with a DHX 5.0 I need to get rid of...so if you feel inspired to build up a rig from the frame let me know haha.

Yeah, if you buy his frame I can hook you up on parts haha.

What year? Stumpys are probly the best bang for your buck trail bike out there.

I'm about to buy a trek fuel ex 8 27.5 soon pretty stoked I just started working at a bike shop and I get the 2,800 dollar bike for 1,200

Okay, so this morning I went on a ride on a 29er for the first time and my god... what can I say, I totally want one now...

My reaction to how basically everything felt...

Ok NS. I need some help. I've been really getting into biking with a friend of mine, the only issue is, where we're riding, the dirt jumper just isn't cutting it. Lots of cross country, single track... Super fun, just not on a dirt jumper. So I'm looking to maybe get another bike. I'm thinking enduro kinda thing...? I love ripping around on downhill (not a lot of opportunity yet) and singletrack, all the cross country trails around me, just going fast. (Which is sketchy on the back brake only DJ...) and kinda keep in it loose and playful. Now getting to the meat of my post: I work at Sportchek. As such, I can get pro deals on some bike brands. Namely Orbea, and GT. Now I can get an Orbea Rallon x30 for approximately 2500 shipped. I'm not sure what I would look at in the GT line, suggestions are appreciated... Or, I can look around, and try and find something used for cheaper...Thoughts? Any input helps, thanks guys!

The sanction is gts enduro beast, and the thing absolutely shreds. However, it is really ideal on really steep tech stuff, and plods a bit on climbs. It sounds like you would be better off on a force, which is a little more trail oriented. I haven't ridden one, so I can't comment on that. Idk how much you could get one of those for, but there is tons of good used stuff in that category. I just sold a sick sb66 for 2100.

I would say to go with the x sport, then add a dropper post and oneup single ring/wide range cassette conversion right away. Is there anyway for you to ride the bikes? You may not even need the travel the force has, depending on your trails.

the recently new whip.. so nice on the downhill but manageable on the ups

fox 36, dhx 5.0, mtx 33 wheels, 760mm deity bars, Xo rear derailleur, x7 shifter, juicy 7 brakes

2.5 specialized clutch and 2.3 chunders are super worn out. Not a huge fan of juicys to begin with.

Soon to be 2.5 DHF 3c in the front and 2.5 DHF 60a in the rear. Either XT or SLX brakes with ice tech rotors and pads is the plan. Dropper post would be dope too

Nice looking bike, trail bikes beefed up for the down are where its at if you aren't racing. Depending on where you ride and how extended your downs are, I would get Zee over both of those options. The stopping power between a quad piston brake vs. dual piston is unmatched for a very minimal weight difference. Zee's also have a great price point usually.

Looking for this exact bike now actually! I need something a little more pedal friendly but can still shred the bike parks. My DH rig is just too much for the single tracks near my work. Looking sweet!

Ok. I'm back. Still need the help of you fellow (more informed) bikers. I think I'm realizing that I could get away with something like a trail bike... Eg. 130/140mm of travel... Just kinda found the Kona Precept DL. That looks like everything I want, as long as it can take some drops/jumps/shredding... Or something similar to that? Thoughts? I'd like to keep my budget under 2500... Even that's gonna be a struggle... Also need some advice on the quiver/stable/whatever the hell you wanna call it, I'm really debating trying to sell my dirt jumper... It would mean I could get a trail/enduro bike a lot faster, and it seems like the majority of my riding at the moment is more that style... Been kinda dissatisfied with the DJ lately... Thoughts?

Thanks guys! Keep on shreddin!

Instead of buying new, get a used bike for the same price and get way more bang for your buck. That bike won't hold up to drops/jumps very well nor is the geometry very fun for that type of riding. If you want a more trail oriented bike in that travel range that can also handle some jumps and small drops, I'd look at something like a used Giant Trance. You can find one just a few years old decked out with way nicer components than that Kona would have new.

Pinkbike's buy/sell section is your friend.

Been checking that and my local kijiji daily... Lack of cash makes it kinda pointless, but whatever...

Speaking of which, is there anything I should be really looking for? Or on the flip side, avoiding? As in, models, issues, etc...

Rode one of the new nomads at duthiefest yesterday. Thing absolutely shreds. Probably the best all around bike I've ridden to date.

Built a jump today somewhere naughty. Starting a loam line/jump line. The beauty is a good 2.5 ft tall at the end and has a mellow 18ish deg takeoff. At 3.5 feet wide, and 5 feet long, as well as a good 5 degrees of inward concave on both sides, this baby is going to be so much fun.

Last year I bought a used (2009 or 2010 I think?) Haro Shift R3. Coming from a hard tail and only riding on Long Island (packed/sandy intermediate singletrack) terrain, I'm super happy and don't feel like I need any upgrades yet. I would like to get some opinions as to what should be upgraded first when the time comes, though.

Id swap the fork first. The 22 is one of the worst reviewed forks out there, and thats coming from someone who likes Marzocchi. Id look for a used fox float from a fewyears s ago. Then I'd upgrade the brakes to some shimano XTs. Maybe the rear derailleur too. Beyond that, the bike is going to become a money pit. After you get some experience and time in on the bike with those upgrades, id save up for a nicer bike.

Even the shimano deores would be a serious upgrade. I can't tell the difference in feel between my buddy's slx and my xt brakes, the only reason to buy xt is adjustability and ice tech, which I doubt a beginner would need.

Just ride the bike. Don't concern yourself with upgrades on this bike, just enjoy riding it.

Check out local demos, or rentals through your local bike shops, or borrow bikes from your friends to see what else is out there. Build some skills on this bike and continue to see what else is on the market that will suit your needs better than your current bike.

Bike technology progresses each year in regards to materials, manufacturing practices, drivetrain and brake options, suspension innovations, geometry refinements etc.; my point is newer bikes ride way better than older bikes. New bikes come out every year, but used bike deals come out every day. Always be on the lookout.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Definitely wasn't looking to put too much into this bike but was curious. Been out of the mountain bike game for a while now but just getting back into it. Originally I rode alot of downhill/freeride, but eventually sold my bike to buy a dual sport motorcycle (WR450)

This was my old bike, nothing crazy by todays standards, but it was the bees knees when I had it new.

f2k5t5.jpg

Just getting back into it, (and being on a tighter budget) I decided to pick up a bike that you could actually pedal, and ended up with this:

21n3x4g.jpg

Also nothing crazy, but its been a blast to ride. It's my first 29'er and I love it.
