Official 2010/2011 NHL Thread

Blah Blah Blah. I hear it every year. Same old story.

The Blackhawks beat everyone. They were beyond incredible last year. I take no shame in losing to that... Especially when Niemi (who we now have) hit another level in that series...

This year, I doubt we'll even win our division - but if we can get another top line D-man at the deadline, we'll be tough as shit to beat in the playoffs..

Good to get a win last night even if it was toronto. Gonna be a tough next couple of games with boston, pittsburgh, and montreal. Would be a badass boost if we can shut down the penguins win streak.
 
The pens play in a pathetic division in a pathetic conference... dont get too far ahead of yourself... You know exactly how streaky the Pens can be... and come February, when they actually play the sharks, who knows how they will be playing.
Besides. My last name's Crosby, don't you know? I'm a fan of the Pens.
 
man such a hard fought game. Felt a little unfair since montreal has like 10 penalities while detroit had like 1.

cant wait to watch toronto and montreal.
 
I agree that the west has more solid teams, but the east has more elite teams. If your a pens fan then why start talking shit on them?
 
only 2 of the last 11 wins of the streak have been against division opponents. not saying that they have beaten the cream of the crop over the streak, either. just sort of doesn't really apply. either way, nobody can deny that crosby is the best in the world. he is so far and away better than everyone else right now it's not even close.

but i don't disagree. i'm terrified right now of the hype and bull shit surrounding this team. it's december for God sake. i can think of another eastern conference team who looked unbeatable throughout the regular season. not to mention a couple from the west. remember how those turned out?

focus, focus, focus. consistency is the name of the game in the NHL.

Everyone's hyping the shit out of the team right now... I was simply pointing out how San Jose rolled through the atlantic division teams last season (Including the pens) with ease... and they rolled over them during a time where everyone and their mom was hyping the poo out of the pens.
What on earth would you call an "elite team"? I dont see any more teams on the east that are more 'elite' than on the west...
 
Yeah... I've seen the sharks go on double digit win streaks before... and win like 18 of 22 and crazy shit like that...

The Pens dont ever win their conference... but they step it up during the playoffs. Theyre made for that haul... They are very adaptive and play evenly against almost any opponent.
We'll see this year though... I personally think they will lose a step or 2 come playoff time.
 
in the past decade i cant think of many times where the west has bested the east. but, that said, i strongly agree that the western conference is just better hockey. more gritty, more physical, more of a team game. the emphasis is on lines (marleau, heatley, thornton / datsyuk, zetterberg, holmstrom / toews, sharp, kane) rather than players (crosby / stamkos / ovechkin).

by the way how the hell is dallas doing so well? i can't even think of any star on that team. brenden morrow, i guess, though he's a little past his prime. loui eriksson? lulz. they're killing it, somehow

i dunno why everyone is trippin out so hard over that goal. cus he did a lil spin at center ice? that shit was useless. or is it because he faked a slapshot and put it 5-hole? i dunno, thats not really that crazy. however, that datsyuk like chip shot that he did was unreal

It was just pretty unconventional and over the top. That being said, I would have punched him in the face, had he missed.

I love how our last 4 wins were against Detroit, Chicago, Philly, and a shutout against Ott, but we cant win against simpleton ass teams....
Oh well... I'll take 2 straight wins vs Chicago anytime... especially 6 months ago...
 
Whoa, fuckin looked like a playoff game last night or something. Great win against boston for us. Feels great to see overtime actually go our way for once.

Dirty hit by shelley though for sure, it didn't look real strong but it was just enough at a bad time in a bad spot. Nice to have carcillo back too, that was hell of a hit he put on lucic.

Now to stop those pens on their hot streak. See ya guys tuesday.

Lovin the fact that we have talent all across the board even if none of it is really phenomenal. I'd say we're definitely in the playoffs, if we play well together maybe even in the running for the cup. We are a philly team though so you never know.
 
haha i was in downtown toronto that night. i actually saw more habs fans then leafs fans. oh well cammalleris goal was sick though

I'm fuckin torn, I love Bobro but boucher has been kicking ass for us lately. aaaahhhhhh Alright I'll say it, I hope booooooooosh is in the goal tonight.

Should be a good one either way and I'll surely be throwing a few back and yelling at the TV.
 
I have been saying this for years, I am calling it tonight!

Flyer fans(in my opinion from tv broadcast!) really only focus on screaming at Crosby, you know "Crosby Sucks" the entire game blah blah.

1st. Crosby really does have an "overdrive" mode the he goes into when he gets pissed. The constant fan attention just gives him a spotlight to shine......try to leave him dormant!

2nd. It reminds your team & coach(the entire game) that they are playing arguably the best player in the NHL as we speak. This usually equals Crosby double teamed/swarmed once he gets the puck(if thats not already the strategy). Hmmmm...what a better way to free up space over the rest of the offensive zone.....he doesnt have nearly an assist a game for no dam reason!(25 right now) :)

And to back that with some sorta fact kinda thing,

Crosby's played 35 career regular season games against the Flyers and he's scored 26 goals and 34 assists for 60 points in those games. That is a disgusting number to thing about.

PS. Enjoy the Pens/Crapitols being shoved down your necks for the next 2 weeks. As a general nhl fan as well, I have no fucking clue why this is our second winter classic, while 24 other franchises have never gotten the chance...its sad.
 
Not very many teams have the cold weather that's appropriate to support the game. It also won't be in Canada because the Canadian teams have their own outdoor NHL game. I wish they would have played it at beaver stadium (Penn State) verses the flyers though. Pens verse flyers, in front of 100,000 people on neutral ice, it'd be insane.
 
Lets go PENS! not Only is the winning streak and crosbys point streak on the line but so is my streak of 8 in espn streak for the cash ahhhh

good, competitive game tonight. really wish geno didn't take that stupid interference penalty but if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have been in it anyway. everyone in the building and their fuckin mom knew the flyers were gonna score on that PP.

oh well it's december. big game vs the rangers in t-minus 20-ish hours. go pens.

I guess unless they decide to have it in Denver, ever... but you know the winter classic's never going to be in Dallas, Phoenix, or LA... lol.

We need more cold weather hockey teams... (Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee... any of these would be more sufficient than southwestern/southeastern teams...)
 
I live like less than an hour outside philly and I don't get it on TV cause I'm not a comcast subscriber. Suuuuuch bullshit. Looks like I'll be pirating live nhl tonight and probably watching some canadian broadcast. This should be a good one for sure.
 
why are the wild named the 'minnesota wild'? why are the hurricanes named the 'carolina hurricanes'? every other team is named after the city they play in. i understand that you can't name yourself after the state when there's more than one team in that state, but there are other states that only have one team representing them and theyre still named after the city. hmmm..

you couldn't really do state though, cause what would you do for states that have multiple teams

pennsylvania penguins or pennsylvania fliers? or are you suggesting they should just have both, like the new york rangers and new york islanders..

i just hate the lack of continuity
 
man.. i rembember when Portland almost got the Coyotes.... that would have been sick.. but at least.. our WHL team the winterhawks is top of the leauge right now.. oh yeah . i stil have my hossa jersey from when he played for us...
 
yeah there was no real point to my post, just adding some others that use the state name.

the one that i find the most stupid though is the Florida Panthers cause its named after the state but the Tampa Bay Lightning also play in Florida so its just kinda weird i guess.

im guessing for the states that have just one team they thought it sounded better or it would be more recognizable. People have heard of Carolina but maybe not Raleigh

ya yo for sure, it fuckin kills me when i see yotes and panthers games and like atlanta games and shit where you look in the stands and you see thousands of empty seats. move that aren up north to canada and that shit would be packed for at least 82 games a year
 
yeah there's probably some underlying political reasoning that we arent aware of. i just found myself thinking about that and wondering why. im a science major, i like definitive, objective answers haha.
