Haven't read the article yet, so can't comment on that, but aromatic hydrocarbons DO feature in oil, as do Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, normal compositions are not as great as long-chain Hydrocarbons, but you have to remember this is crude oil, so you can be sure of finding most lipophilic and H-C based structures present (condition Dependant).
in stating that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are oil, the Author was simplifying the situation, but was correct, the arene; Benzene, will group in to triplets this fusing produces Phenanthrene, which is a Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon... If you don't get it I'll explain more...
