Nuclear energy - Do you feel safe with it?

^That article is ridic. This statement

"For the microbes to use that oil as food when there's no atmospheric oxygen, they have to find oxygen in the rocks. There is plenty there, but there is not all that much in an easily removable form."

is offensive. It's called anerobic respiration, and any electron donor will do. Absolutley ridic. (wired is mocking this guy fyi ).

Oh, and this:

Wired: What they called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons?

Reply: That's Oil.

PAH's are not oil, oil is straight chain hydrocarbons. PAH's are conjugated ring structures where the number of joined rings is >1

Haven't read the article yet, so can't comment on that, but aromatic hydrocarbons DO feature in oil, as do Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, normal compositions are not as great as long-chain Hydrocarbons, but you have to remember this is crude oil, so you can be sure of finding most lipophilic and H-C based structures present (condition Dependant).

in stating that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are oil, the Author was simplifying the situation, but was correct, the arene; Benzene, will group in to triplets this fusing produces Phenanthrene, which is a Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon... If you don't get it I'll explain more...

^Thanks for the Chem lesson killer. So you're agreeing with the author of the article in that wherever you find PAH's you have oil?

nevermind. It's arguing on the internet. I'm over it. my opinion is that nuclear power is safe, and the best alternative we've got right now to fossil fuels.

I'm not arguing, I haven't read the article, I can't talk on it, oil is made up of multiple components one of which is Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, on there own they do not make crude oil, just as Hexane on it's own isn't crude oil...

yea, nuclear fission and later, fusion are the future...
