NS Movie Update Sept 22

i was pretty bummed to...he made it such a big thing to get the segments in by a certain date and its been over a month now...the main thing i hope is that he didnt re edit each segment a little bit. I hate it when people make there own changes without sharing.

I feel like we all didn't a solid job based off of all the prelim videos, and he shouldn't try to mess with anything
 
this contest is about kids from the site getting their sweet footy shown, we're not trying to compete with msp or planet earth, the movie isn't gona be released on blu ray, or broadcast over an hd signal.
 
I agree. The goal of the movie shouldn't be to make a film production company quality movie as much as it should be to showcase kids who shred. Requiring expensive stuff seems to go against the idea behind the movie.
 
Oh, def not, but it just makes it nice and easier. I mean you don't want people to send in shit footage. Who knows though, he could change his mind.
 
you have no idea what you're talking about. you can get great footage from a good number of standard def cameras...
 
Expand your mind a little.

I didn't say that standard cameras are shit, but there is always one or two in the bunch that has some sick steeze but is lacking in film quality.

I know nothing about filming because I'd rather capture an image than watch it move.

But like in regular picture taking, it's the difference between a Motorola camera phone, a Fujifilm FinePix 8.2MP, and a Canon 20D. I'd rather take the photos from the 20D because I know their quality, and a large majority of the pictures don't come out blurry from unsteady hands.

 
It's not a matter of hate.

If I were an editor (which I am), I wouldn't want to deal with shit quality either way. It's just a pain in the ass, and I don't have the patience for it. I am not saying that all standard def cameras make shit quality vids, but you need to know how to work it - the magic touch so to speak. I'm also not saying you need to be Spielberg, but try your best to make the quality good and worth watching. BUT then again you could be like my dad with an HD cam standing on a boat capturing a boat race in Miami - first time I ever got seasick in the privacy of my own home. More or so times you're going to get the best quality from the people with the HD cameras.
 
As a filmer, I disagree. I think that the movie also has the potential to show off some up-and-coming filmers, also.

I think one of the problems is that the best riders may not have access to filmers with the most skill and best equipment and vice versa. I know that was a huge problem for me starting out.

Here is an idea to consider. I know it's not perfect.

What if there was a JOSS-type competition. Everyone, athletes and filmers, had to submit 1-minute long edit by January 15 or 31 or something. Everyone on NS would vote separately for the best skier and best filmer, both in a region and overall. The regions would be defined as an area that does not require more than a day to drive across. The top 20 (or whatever) would win a spot in the movie. If you're a skier and your filmer won, you could work together. If not, you're paired up with another one in your region. You then have until the end of the season to shoot a segment.

This way, athletes don't have to worry about buying an HD cam instead of going to contests and it allows everyone to make the connections they need to make it to the next level.

In my opinion that would just be far too difficult to coordinate. Also we have seen how poorly the NS voting system works. People vote up their friends and down other people or edits with types of skiing they dont like, leaving a one dimensional film that hardly brings out the best edits~

You said that stardard def cameras can have great quality, and I didn't disagree with that. The thing is, would you, personally, rather edit with all HD edits or some HD and some shit quality edits? I do know what I am talking about when it comes to people handing me quality pictures from there Fujifilm FinePix and shitty pictures from a standard camera phone. If I'm making a graphic for them or some type of ad, I would take their quality pictures from their semi-good camera or I'll go take the pictures myself. Honesty, I doubt people from who are going to edit this movie are going to travel all over NA to film fellow NSers with a good camera. You have to look at this from an editing standpoint, which I think you would understand.
 
seriously, please shut up aspendukes. no one cares that you consider a photo from a $1500 camera better than one from a camera phone. U even admited you have no idea about video, "I'd rather just take 1 still photo then be troubled with the difficulty of 30fps" Stewie - "Every hot girl who can aim a camera thinks she's a photographer. Oooooooh, you took a black-and-white picture of a lawn chair and its shadow and developed it at Save-On." HD would only complicate things in every aspect, and exclude a bunch of kids who rip from the contest. I can't even imagine how long it would take old dave to put the video out if kids submitted 10 kinds of HD and HDV footage. I am 100% in my element on this and know what I'm talking about, you're wrong, shut up, don't defend yourself to the death, just lay back and take it for the horrible things you've already said.
 
Ok, fine, 10 different types of HD and a million other different types with standard def cameras. Lets just keep adding it up. I guess the more formats the better. Good luck with that because you must have a lot of time on your hands.

BTW I've actually made a business with my graphics and photography - Habitat for Humanity, golf courses, weddings, restaurants, etc. Yeaup, lots of lawn chairs there.
 
what the shit are you talking about?

HD only on the next video would be fucking stupid. there are plenty of cameras that you can get professional looking quality from that aren't HD, as long as you know how to use them.. DVX's, VX21's, GL2's.. the list goes on..

I never said that there weren't other quality cameras that aren't HD.

But hey, if ya'll want to fuck around with a million different formats and shit then be my guest. Typical guys...always doing things the hard way, and never making it easier for themselves.
 
oh man im not going to say that i know anything about cameras, but to mix and and 3ccd is not a big deal, and would make for a better movie, far more people have 3ccd meaning more entries, for instance i have the ability to work with a GL1 this season.. but absolutely no way of shooting HD
 
If more people have that camera then go for it. I was just saying that there could be some really good skiers that could be working with a really shitty camera. I just think that you would see some super nice footage and then then next to it there would just be some footage that didn't have any quality but dope skiing. It's just flow I guess. But whatever, turn in whatever quality you want.
 
I don't think it would be too hard to coordinate. They managed to pull off something very similar for JOSS.

Regarding the NS voting system, I think there are ways to improve it and to avoid destructive voting. You could base most winners on voting, but have a panel of Judges select some winners to ensure that some of the best don't slip through the cracks. Destructive voting is something that many sites have had to deal with and I'm sure there are lots of solutions out there.
 
Not only does joss have way way more funding, they are also all professionals and all of them were together. I dont think you can really compare the NS movie to JOSS just yet lol~
 
i think the main thing for the next movie is that it should be filmed in 16x9, any other formats just wont do because if you have to stretch or make a video smaller in size it ruins its quality. And i know from seeing the different edits that were around early on in the contest were all sorts of sizes which just further complicates things.
 
the main issue i think for volume 2 is that everyone in the film needs to have XXL or above size clothing. Im tired of seeing people who act white skiing.
 
idk if some1 alreadt said this but if you made ppl pay for the dvd and you can download couldnt you just put it on a disk so it might be a good idea might not be

I did this segment in a fuckin rush cause apparently it needed to be done by the next day absolutly, well this is one month ago or more. sorry dave man but i'd like to see that movie soon, and I guess it'll be crazy like hell cause it's been a while!

and aspendukes, dont try to impress people with your parents wedding videos and shits, we don't give a fuck and you obviously don't know what the hell your talking about, "10 HD formats would be great" ha ha ha. I have a panasonic HVX200 and i still think that turning the entire contest in HD is not a good idea, like the other said higher in the topic, it kicks out kids who have DVX's, GL and stuff, whom are probably shooting 10X times better images than those who have shiitty little HD cameras. word.
 
haha i know i almost laughed when I read that. The number of people who can go out and do that will be so small. There would be such a better way to do this movie then telling everyone to go out and buy cameras. I really think NS should do multiple sessions like the West Coast Session, but do like 5-6 across the country, do closed off shoots for a few days, then 1-2 days of public ripping and film all the kids that way then find a different way to vote! The filmers could all be the same, your footage would all be one format, and you could control it so much easier. Just my 2 cents.
 
where is it? it's been a week since this was posted, and we submitted our segments a month ago at least. i mean i had to edit this while i was in china, you cant be any busier than i was.
 
Shits gonna be sick. Im sure the wait will be worth it so chill peoples. Rather have him work on it extra then try and rush it and have it not be put together well.

also, it's looking like the release date will be october 13th, NS is super busy and that was the earliest we could get it into the news articles

I never said all SD cameras were shit. I never said that all HD cameras were all jam n' jelly either. Go practice your reading comprehension more.

I have to wait until there is space for it in the news articles, schmuck told me the earliest we could do it is the 13th of october, so all I can do is wait
