No one knows about us!

It's so ridiculous how absolutely no one out there knows about park skiing. I wrote this paper for my college writing class about the tension between skiers and snowboarders and how its going away and shit and we did this peer review type thing where we read eachothers shit and tried to question it (in a constructive way of course) and this kid read mine and wrote "The presence of boarding is to be laid back and relaxed, even at a pro level. Skiing at a pro level is precise, rehearsed and cold." and in my paper I said that skiers and snowboarders are really similar people since they are both elitist sports, and he was like 'no, snowboarding came from skateboarding which is rebellious and counter-culture so snowboarding isn't elitist, you should fix that.' and to describe how precise skiing is he was like 'you know how skiers like go up a thing and go in the air and land, that shit is really precise if you make any mistakes at all you lost points and stuff.' I almost cried. Is it really that hard to describe a jump? I'm pretty sure he was talking about aerials, but it was pretty hard to tell.

it's so weird how people just know absolutely nothing about new school skiing. I guess the 90,000 people on here are the only ones...

just thought I'd share this experience with you cause I'm supposed to be editing the paper right now, but I cant possibly justify making any of the changes anyone suggested becuase they're all retarded.

well you are writing the paper to get a grade. keep in mind that fact, as well as who is going to be doing the grading.

Yeah, skateboarding is so rebellious and counter-culture that every 12 year old pokemon card playing kid does it now. Skating was counter culture years ago, but as with everything else, the counter-culture gets watered down to an easily digestable form and becomes the new culture, then a new counter-culture forms. Seems to me that's what happened to snowboarding too. It took over in sales and popularity and skiing's future was looking pretty bleak. Every kid and middle aged father who wanted to hit the slopes got on a board. Then, newschool became the new counter-culture. It has the cult following, it has rapid progression, it has more obscure athletes and brands. So, boarding bills itself as counter-culture, but it is really just mass produced, homogenized, and marketed as counter-culture. Skiing is the new cult, the new obscure, and quite frankly the new cool.

as i said in another thread, when i say i ski, kids assume im one of the people who wear jeans, fannypack, spyder jacket, trendy hats with the crazy dreadlock colors, and goes up for one weekend a year to ski with my parents on rental and pizza stop like im a delivery man. its really frustrating.

and trying to explain freeskiing is even more tough. i get the vibe that they think its aerials or they say 'ohh you mean snowblades?!!1?/?". no one fucking knows.

i love it. i hope there is never a mountain dew commercial with sammy carlson octograbbing a green wave through a generic highschool hallway.

and that dude with the fanny pack and the jeans?

i wish people thought i was him.

I hate having to constantly explain to people that Newschool skiing is not aerials and moguls. That it is a big thing and also the fact that we are no longer rebels to society. That we have sponsors and that the sport is growing. It's so annoying

Also, when I trry to initiater them by showing these weekend warriors, seth morrison, they Just look astonished and said. That was easy. he just went down that hill.

I also resent the fact that no one recognizes that to become a pro althlete in newschool skiing requires natural talent and alot of practice and training and that you cannot just put on skis and throw a kangaroo flip.

One day, our sport will be recognised.

Recently I went and chilled w my cousin in Huntington and he tried teaching me how to surf, I find it difficult, but so damn fun. Anyways, after watching "September Sessions" with some friends, I remembered that I still had TBC and War in my car. I asked everyone if they wanted to check out some new school skiing, and everyone gave me shit for not snowboarding.

So I threw in War, and the room fell silent, everyone was amazed, and wanted to rewind some seggies. The next night we watched TBC and they liked it even better.

My cuz was like "I had no fuckin idea skiing was that cool." The public's perception of skiing still has some catching up to do.

Yeah, not that i care what others really think, but all my closest mates board (which i have no issue with) and they tried to 'convert' me to boarding for ages (which i did for a few years but then went back to skiing). Until they saw some of the potential and progressive footage of newschool skiing they had NO IDEA..half of them wanna give skiing a try now and certainly view it a different way than say, 3 years ago.

There is definitely a strong perception of what 'skiing' is out there, and it seems until evidence is shown otherwise it will remain the same (as in the peer-assessment of your paper).

We (members of this website) have a very closed wiew of the sport - as everyone here has a common interest.

Even in the shop i work at, the boss doesn't want to get too many twins in for sale, as he said when i wanted get 4frnt and some other indepenents into the store: "Although there is an apparent hype [for newschool skis], i'm yet to see it reflected in the sales" - it really is a niche market in the snowsports industry. Unfortunately parks arent made for skiers, they are made for the demand coming from snowboarding, it's getting much better for us, but there is a LONG way to go yet.

I'd like to see the sales stats for the latest Absinthe film, versus the latest PBP film - that would open some eyes.

Mega props to the companies giving it some good solid profile like winter X, ski tour, WSI, US Open etc - at least it gets some (although minimal) coverage.]

whatever. that definitely started to ramble.

its getting better Vinny, for example skiers half pipe is not a prime time event and is shedding a new light for people who don't have the chance to be exposed to freestyle skiing or "park" skiing. For example the other day i was talking about skiing with one of my friends and one of my other friends who doesn't ski started talking about Tanner and Simon in the x games and how he didn't realize that skiing was so much like snowboarding and in many aspects he preferred to watch it. our sport is still young and you just need to be patient. the worst thing to happen now if for freestyle skiing to blow up to much like inline skating and make it a fad.

in a way i think its like kinda funi. u like tell sum1 u ski n dey automaticalli think u like ski race or sumthing. the sport has evolved so fast and its hard to get in2 dumb ass single minded people that skiing has evolved to become "cool". i dnt think skiing cud realli blow up n lyk become a fad like roller blading because every1s so dedicated to making it work. so much time and money has been invested in the sport and its soooooo fun it will just keep on growing n growing.

i think that people know about us...the people are the skiing industry and some of the snowboarders...but i know when people ask if i snowboard i am like shit no, i ski the park like they do on snowboards. But people just dont understand how its possible i guess...

people are fucked

true that man. i told one of my teachers i was goign in a ski competition - she was like- like around the gates? im like no - in the terrain park - of jumps and rails. she said - o you mean your snowboarding? ...

wow.

I agree with this 100%, I love going on a ski trip with one other skier and 7 boarders it just feels cool to add the variety to your group and we all accept and give respect to each other. Also goin to the skate park and rollin when you are the only one there without a board amongst like 25 kids, and i've been rollin since i was little with all my friends who are skate boarders. So now i roll into the skate park and get squirley looks from all the grom skaters, until i get big air and sweet grinds and pull respect from the older skaters(my friends), then half of em look like they wanna do what everyone else isn't doin. Also I should say all my snowboarding friends get a huge kick out of my ski vids when i bring them on trips just like said above.

yea its weird whenever i say to my dad "alright im headed off to the park with so and so" hes like "i thought skiers werent allowed in parks" The sad part is that he asks this every time i go...

We are making progess, a couple days ago at school the Tom Wallisch superunkown video came out, My School being overtaken by boarders besides 3 people including me, But people were coming up to us and telling us how sick skiing was getting, and that they wanted to try it.

This winter i hosted a Long Story Short premier, and like 10 people came that also went to my school, the people that din't come wish they had, after seeing X-Games, and some of the Videos on youtube, hopefully next fall we have a much bigger attendence.

even people that ski or snowboard are blind to our type of skiing. i was on the lift with an older guy with my skis on and he asked me what was my favorite trail was so i told him it was the park and he was like "o so you snowboard to"

I wish skiing got more recognition that some drunk racers or old guys doing pizzas. But hey, better this way than every little punk talking about their insane 720's like boarding unfortunately gets. It will happen eventually, for better or for worse.

Newschool is blowing up though. Go to any ski shop and ask them which type of ski sells the most. They will always say twintips

Its a writing course he is in. I would imagine that it was an exercise in writing, where the topic is not what is important but the format and technical aspects of his writing are what matters. That seems to be somewhat important as we have kids in this very thread writing "i dnt think skiing cud realli blow up n lyk become a fad like roller blading".

the nice thing is that not many people ski just because they think its cool, people ski because its fun. that cant be said about boarding. Its kinda funny sometimes tho, i mean some people really dont know wut newschool skiings like- they think the park is called the "snowboard park"

hahahaha, fully agreed, i like skiing just how it is, actually i wish it was smaller. it has a really rad little community. and its getting to big. for instance, simon on target... enough said, it is no too big

Sooo true. I wrote an essay that compared skiing to snowboarding, and after we did a peer-edit session, everyone wrote comments like "i gotta try skiing now, it sounds like so much more fun than snowboarding".

That's sick, but most people don't know anything about us.

I kinda like that, because of the whole attitude of nobody doing it to be cool, just having fun.

yeah it pisses me off a little bit but then i think to myself that my friend, bro and i are the only people who do it in the school and that is pretty sick to know

yea as casimiro said it's a writing class so the topic was not important. we were just practicing reasearching and mla format. which sucked cuz there aren't exactly a lot of academic journals on skiing and snowboarding... but it worked out.

I have to do a newsletter for my graphic arts class, and it took me 20 mins to explain what freeskiing is. One of her quotes was "And people other than you do this" and "Why dont you just do snowboarding"

I think it's great like it is! I love those situations when you're talking to someone about what's been going on that day and what you've been trying to do and what you did and then they go like, "well yeah I can't do all of that yet, I just started snowboarding." and then see there face go like WTF if you tell them you're no boarder but a skiër, they just don't understand it hahaha

Tried to convince some people I know who started this year with snowboarding to go skiïng, but not one of them did it, because boarding is some much cooler... suckers!

skiing and Surfing are the original Counter cultures, sking has been kol since day 1 from Stein Erickson doing front and back flips on old 230 wooden planks in the late 40s early 50s to guys throwing front flips of the Palisades at Squaw valley in the 60s' to hot dogers like Wayne Wong edd lincon in the 70s, John eves and john Falkner in the old james bond movies (john Eves did a fakie flare in her majestys seret service(fakie back 180 to you retards)) to frank bare doing Areials in the back counrty in 1984 he did a triple twisting quad back flip of a jump he built him self.. Old school movies like Hog dog, Down hill racer skiing was the shit for a long long time with many famous skiers dating models and movie stars , glen Plake and Scott Schmidt were on teh today show , then the early 90s came moguls started to die but it was still huge in certain Places Edgar Groprirons was oneof the most famous people in france.... then came the new school stuff which is just blowing up skiing is a counter culture and your Teacher is full of shit tell him whats up... Skiing comes from hard core norwegian people 10 thousand years ago, how can you get more core than that... I was interviewed for a magazine like 2 weeks ago here in Australia that does music , action sports and stuff like that and they had never done anything ski related its always surf skate and a few times snowboard, I live 17 hours from the closet ski resort but I live on kirra /superbank where they have the quicksilver pro soo most people have no idea about skiing, we have to educate the masses sking is sick Seth Morrison is one of the greatest Athletes in history jsut know one knows it the shit he does it up there with What Laird Hamilton does in the Ocean people need to recognise how sick our sport is ..

in that interview i tryed to tell people that skiing and surfing are the original Action sports, they have been around the longest and are simply the best sports in the world, with out skiing there would be no snowboarding , with out surfing there would be no skateboarding there for no snowboarding soo snowboarding owes alot more to skiing than skiing owes to snowboarind , big deal they showed us how to slide rails and grab our skis, guys were doing hell gnar shit long before jake burton was a potential carpet stain..

I have a music technology class where i get to dub a video. Its a great chance for me to show everyone what ns skiing is. I think I might go with the LSS trailer or the t wallisch superuknown vid. If anyone's got a better clip suggestion though, please post them.

and before long skiing will become recognzed as the "rebellious" counter culture thing to do, and then it will be just as mainstream as other sports
