No JOSS, JOI with new format.

From Jon's Blog:
The events in Åre has always had its main focus on the riders, so when we asked them what they wanted and 9 out of 10 said the same thing it was a pretty easy decision, JOSS will take a one year break and give room for an “all in” Big Air event- JOI will be back just like in 2007 to give the guys the best possibilities ever to learn new tricks and push the limits to what can be done!
It seemed that most guys had been missing the unique possibilities that they had during JOI 2007, where they had one kicker to session for a week enabling them to really progress and figure new things out as we as organizers had more time to perfect one kicker instead of trying to build 5 of them. As the ski world always wants new things I thought it was a good year to do this to give JOSS a breather so it could come back fresh again for next year. I think it would be a perfect concept to alternate JOSS and JOI every year t keep it fresh and exciting!New for this year is that invite system, 15 riders will be invited and another 15 spots will be open for video qual. [/b]As you know we have always wanted to give “up and comers” the chance to qual to JOI, but I think having 50% of the start field qual through video will really change things up!Since we all know judging and formats has been a bit of an issue this year I have thought long and hard about what to do with that and I believe that I have come up with a solution that could handle a lot of these issues!Qual:[/b]-30 skiers take 2 runs, best one counts. 10 moves on. (+ 2 wildcards)Final:[/b]-12 skiers take one run, top 10 advances-10 skiers take one run, top 8 advances.-8 skiers take one run, top 6 advances.-6 skiers take one run, top 4 advances.-4 Skiers take two runs, best one counts. In this way the judges only have to look for the 2 worst skiers every run, which should make things a lot easier to get it right. Then in finals you have room to fall once so you can really bust out your best stuff and go for it! You never know before you tried it, but I am very excited about this format!Preliminary schedule:[/b]12th of April: Tuesday: Skiers arrive, training 16-2113th of April Wednesday: Training 16-2114th of April Thursday: Training 16-2115th of April Friday: Nations cup 18-2116th of April Saturday JOI 19-2117th of April Sunday: Red Bull Home run18th of April Monday: Departure day. Hope you guys like it! I know some will miss the JOSS movies, but don’t worry, JOSS will be back next year bigger then ever! Then again, the best skiers in the works on the same kicker for a week should create some insane skiing, some might remember what JOI 2007 looked like and with how far this sport has come since then I cant even think of what will go down in Åre on the 16thof April! I actually don’t think a dub 12 will get you into finals…[/b]

Sounds pretty sick if you ask me!

this is gonna be sick... i hope the jump is massive so there can be some massive dubs maybe triples??!!?

This is good I guess, now I won't get driven crazy by really good edits in April, when I can't ski.

this is going to be so sick. Im so stoked for this, because Jon always hands down has the best competition of the year.

I hope simon isnt invited either. After his little temper tantrum he either needs to need a video qualification or not come at all. jackass cry baby.

Sounds like a great format for an awesome event. I really like the two run format in the start, and particularily for the final round for sure!

thats what amde the article for me, so stoked. i just think we probabley wont see everyone we expect in the finals because people need to have luck that they stomp everything almost every round first try.

I like it. That is so sick that half the field will be qualifying by video submissions, stoked for the lesser known guys.

haha for sure! Pretty sick that he's opening it up to half invited, half video qualifier; really giving kids out there a chance!

YESSS Jon always delivers and i have really missed JOI like it used to be back in the days. With the right jump and right riders this can potentielly change the way ski comps are judged and what tricks that have to be done to win. just like 2006 when Jon came up with the kangaroo and introducing newschool dubs to competitions.
I wonder if they can do the same trick every run trough the entire comp?Lets say Bobby does a sw dub 16 mute-shifty just to put it extreme.. can he make that same trick trough out the whole comp and win with just one trick? or do they have to mix up the runs with different tricks like at JOI the year PK won with his sw 9 mute? that would make this JOI even more fun to watch if they had to do different tricks each run.
How ever i am really looking forward to this, it is going to be crazy!JON leading the way for progression!

i was really hoping some kind of session (like xgames bigair last year) would be involved since he seems to be trying for progression by doing this. still going to be sick but its pretty similar to any big air event.

at least it isnt two people go against eachother and one gets kicked if he crashes while the other does a backflip just to land something...

loved JOI before. it won't disappoint.

interesting... well i was stoked for joss seeing how sick it was last year, but this sounds dope too! cant wait to see it take place

way to go team america..... more proof america is good for nothing. JOSS was my favorite event of all time...

just kidding about TA, but JOSS is my favorite event

We had a big air up at big sky that used the same format. It seemed to work pretty well. definatly the best way to judge a big air.

This is going to be rideiculous, it would be sweet if they did it on more than one jump somehow, but this will be sweet to

sounds sick but a little constructive criticism: rather than having the 5 rounds of finals make it easier for the judges to pick out the 2 worst, it's just going to make the competition nothing but a consistency comp aka dub 10 fest. If the skiers have to land 4 tricks back to back they aren't going to push it and the judges aren't going to be choosing anyone, because at least 2 people will fall every round or if not its going to be because it's a dub 10 fest... the rest of it sounds real well thought out and the event as a whole sounds great, but I would seriously reconsider that finals scenario.

totally man, it really bothered me that halfway across the world a bunch of skiers and filmers hit a bunch of jumps for a week. what a relief that that isn't happening anymore!

haha

seriously i m a bit bummed cause the JOSS videos are always sick as fuck, as good as the movies that come out in the fall.

team canada last year was really $$$$

but i guess the 15 open spots is a really good thing for the sport.

jon knows what s up and is clearly trying to innovate and to push things in new directions.

this actually sounds good. im glad he is stepping up after the disputes and issues that came up last year
