Point of this post: We have tons of amazing ski companies that want to get involved with you, the Newschoolers audience. The question is how. We have banners, team updates, pre-roll, skins... We try to offer ways for brands on the move to speak to you. Thoughts? What parts of Newschoolers do you want to see improve? People are willing to invest in improving Newschoolers, IF, I can convice them it's what YOU want.
Live hard ski hard.

YES!

Lowedaddy... hah!

I've been trying to tell this fucking guy to post on the site forever. two posts eh? What a n00b.

Seriously though guys, Lowedaddy is awesome. He's basically the reason that Newschoolers is so successful right now. If you wanted to thank one person for keeping Newschoolers what it is - thank this guy.

Good question though Aaron - what DO you guys think of the advertising program?

cant really think of something right now

but just plz try to keep ads away from the vid section as much as possible especially the 45 second ones

plz

ads that enlarge/make noise/interfere with my browsing in any way make me HATE that company, so none of those EVER again please

Advertising is constant in everyone's day to day life. Billboards, product placement, tv commercials, the list goes on. It's great when advertising funds athletes in terms of sponsorships because it promotes the sport as well as the company.
When it comes to Newschoolers, I don't mind seeing advertisement, but being forced to view a product rather than enjoy what this website is a definite No.
Find the balance between being able to support this site with advertisement and donations but still keeping it out of our hair. I don't want to see this site becoming commercialized

I just hate ones that invade the page. Like if they stay in their area they are okay but when they start their invasion its time to draw the line. and truthfully I kinda like the background ads, alot of people hate them cause they click out there which I understand, but lets just say you could make a certain part of the background clickable so not everytime you click the background you go to a different page. Not sure how coding that would work but I like when the background reflects contests and comps going on. Like let say JOI is coming up, it would be kinda cool if NS reflected that, kinda going with the industry.

Ads aren't bad when they reflect the industry, hell ns is so influential in the freeskiing industry, it connects everybody, thus why it is such a strong asset. You have companies that look here for reviews, what people want, talented people put up videos, filmers flim those people, industry folk shows product and help sponsor the real talented people. Photogs posts photos on here which can be used in publications or anything dealing with the industry. The other side of things is that people meet others through here all the time. I'm on my local hill and I seem to know everybody that is remotely into the park scene, not that im good or anything, but we're connected. I've met many people who I have later skied with on NS, many friends. Just the other day I was telling someone on the lift about something, and he was like, "oh I just posted an edit on NS the other day" which lead to the exchange of NS names and me telling him that there is a Video Section Reamp coming along.

Companies should advertise here and be active here, or how else would they know what else is going on with their industry. If the review section gets back into full swing, companies could read reviews of their product and further change on that and then when they advertise and are active here people could have an easier time of questioning or knowing of their products. NS is nothing but growing, and the people that don't hop on will be left behind.

I have faith in newschoolers judgement in relations to advertising, however there is one thing that needs to be changed.

BAN THOSE FUCKING GOO-BALLS THAT ADVERTISE ON THREADS!!!! THEY SHIT EVERYONE!!!!!

Other then that newschoolers is by far the best website for skiers and always will be, keep it real.

Yes I believe that ads on here are good. I've actually found out about some companies via the upper and side banners, such as phil park. I don't think they are annoying at all and are MUCH more entertaining than other sites that are show me how great Glad detergent is...
The ads before videos sometimes get annoying but come on, its about skiing and has skiing in it.
On a side note.. I think for changes, newschoolers definitely needs a new video upload system and player. It never works for me and if it does I never know because it doesnt show the status of the upload..

i think the line ads usually do it right. have an embedded video clip looping of someone doing something rad, draws the attention and then links you to their site.

its the same idea as those 'date hot russian girls' ads that are on the side of porn sites, nah mean?

ads longer than 5 or 10 secs before a video just pisses me off, i dont need to see the same ski for 45 secs everytime i watch an edit, if i want to buy a ski im going to research the hell out of it myself so a minute long product pitch before every video gets annoying

the front page ads are my favorite, just an ill picture enough text to get the point across and i usually end up clicking it, any of the ads i click are these ones, but i hate when they make noises and/or take over the screen

I honestly dont mind the advertisements the only thing that really annoys me are the 45 second pre video ads. I actually quite enjoy the Line ads in pre video, they show some nice skiing and a good product. I dont really care about the BG ads, i actually like the bit of spice they ad to the site, and generally I actually find interesting stuff when I click them. I think the current amount of ads is fine, you could probably even throw a few more in and I wouldn't care.

so, I suppose I should just say the few ads that will make me angry, the rest are fair game.

ads I hate: Pop up, 45 second pre video ads, music ads.

every thing else is fair game

The ads with the looping video usually get me, the one for Smith with bobby brown is what i'm thinking of.

You should try to get a deal with Backcountry.com to have a permanent box on the Home Page that shows the deals currently on all of their one-deal-at-a-time sites. I check all of those sites fairly often, but if I could just see the deals straight from NS I'm sure I'd be visiting those sites a lot more regularly. Seems like it would be a good deal for NS, BC, and the users.

I dont agree, I think it is a nice option for companies, but its anoying that you can click on it..

I think these companies should be doing more investing with there product rather than there name. They should advertise by having more contests because everyone loves free shit and the companies that give it

I think this is a hard thing to balance. I agree I hate preview ads, especially because it took ns so much longer than the rest of the internet to get them. For companies trying to reach their target audience, especially one that relies on buy/sell/trade, seeing advertising dollars translate into traffic at either core shops or their own websites must be hard to see. However, with newschoolers, I think the backcountry embedded thing is a great idea, something along the lines of berries unified, and involvement. Your never going to get the attention of ns by having click away ads to a less interesting site, you must increase involvement through contests, tying in with other social media forms, and ways for nsers to take ownership of the brands themselves. Like the people above were saying, ns can set the tone for the entire industry, so companies should focus on promoting one of their signature events rather than their brand. Everbody knows who line and k2 and smith optics is, and watching bobby brown spin the same trick on repeat isn't going to make me want their goggles more, but seeing what awesome comps they sponsor paired with the coverage that the likes of Mr. Schmuck brings is good. Traditional advertising will never work, because its still their parents money, so making the same type of ad that discover card has only with skis in it won't do it.

Have a contest in which whatever company tries to get a ground army to get the word out. Like finding the person on ns that can best make an amateur commercial or finding the next person to blog for them. Contests that offer opportunity besides getting sponsored or some swag. Contests that get people excited at the prospect of being listened to.

The ads in the vid section can be annoying like the 45 second ones from salomon. Line and TNF have the rights ads short and too the point. I don't mind watching ads if I'm supporting the site.

Video Section though I would say improve the uploader, so it is actaully good and then "force" everybody to upload through it. Now all the vids can have ads before it and hopefully good ads and not the ones of nick martini telling me about spk pros for a minute.

There should be a 30 second ad limit and be good quality, unlike the minute long salomon ads that are poorly made.

On a side note physical promotion is also nice to see...

Example: i go to school at western michigan university. This morning on my way to class someone had stuck about 10 saga stickers all over campus. Im finding them everywhere. Def. Eye catching. Its nice to see others supporting a company like saga all the way out here. And its a pretty cheap way to support them too.

things that bother me:

-ads that pop out, make noise, enlarge etc etc

-waiting through an ad to watch some douche fall off a flat bar

-the skins are kiiind of annoying but you guys are pretty sparing with them and seem like you only do it occasionally to promote something time-sensitive

things that i love:

-everything else, keep up the good work. beautiful site, for real

I believe everyone agrees that the Smith ads were spectacularily done. Smooth video, no sound, no popping up - just there for our pleasure and they are the only ads I have purposefully followed through.

oh yeah, i forgot about those. you mean like the ones with bobby b doing dub corks at x games and stuff? yeah, silent nice video with as few distractors as possible is so nice. i'll make a point to click good ads like that from now on a bunch

keep things new and exciting. the new ad for $10 shipping on the NS/Jiberish hoodie is perfect. if you keep mixing things up then it is more likely to catch our attention. i personally ignore ads that i already know about because i am not interested. another thing that is crucial is to keep the ads simple but still awesome. i dont want to look at a bunch of flashy shit when i am browsing the site so make stuff easy on the eyes. 2cents

Wow, killer feedback everybody. I'll be posting more often - stay tuned. I want to keep digging for your opinions on all aspects of the site. The more real beta we gather like this, the better Newschoolers will become. Lookin' to charge into the future and maintain status as THE online home to skiing. Keep her real.

keep up the good work. as i said, the site is beautiful-- ive tried other forums (cough TGR cough) but nothing feels and looks as good as this site. ive been here for ten years and i can list the things that have bothered me on one hand..good shit guys keep it up

I think ads in the video section are good if they are like 10-20 seconds. Like the Line's one. Not the salomon.

In other words, try to keep the ads in the video section about 15 seconds long.

Alright, so I was too lazy to read the thread (surprise surprise), and I hope this hasnt been mentioned.

I dont know if anyone has been on COC's website, but I like their style of a little box with their sponsors' logos (clicky at that) cycling through. I really like it.

get your companies to all the little local comps and bring free shit. lol

bu as for the interwebz. have contests every little of while,

One thing I think you could fix is the ads before a video. I get that ads help keep NS alive, and I really enjoy them, except for when I have to watch a 10 second ad for a 30 second video. I feel like there should be a rule, like if it under a certain time, there is no ad.

I think you guys should also make it less intimidating for smaller companies to get started with advertising on Newschoolers. I feel intimidated at least.
