New York Schools Get Record List on Banned Words

The New York City School Department has published a long list of words that should not be used in school tests, or someone could be offended.

The list was sent to private corporations that compete on selling their test services to schools in the area - tests that focus on English, Math, Biology and Societal subjects.

The list mentions 50 subjects and words.

Mentioning dinosaurs could lead to unnecessary discussion about evolution and creation, and mentioning Birthdays in tests might offend Jehova's Witnesses who don't celebrate them. Not to mention slavery and terrorism, or poverty and wealth.

The list is said to not encourage censorship, but to guide schools and standard test companies in modifying their tests accordingly and to not offend or hurt any specific group or individual.

The list of banned words and topics:

Abuse, Alcohol, Drugs, Smoking, Birthdays, Holidays, Bodily functions, Cancer (and other diseases), Catastrophes or Natural Disasters, Celebrity, Laptops, Crime, Death, Sickness, Divorce, Evolution or Creation, Expensive gifts, Gambling, Halloween, Homelessness, Homes with pools, Hunting, Fast Food, Sports, Unemployment, Nuclear weapons, The Occult, Parapsychology, Politics, Pornography, Poverty, Rap music, Religion, Rock music, Eloping, Sex, Slavery, Terrorism, Video games, Traumatic material, Vermin, Violence, War, Bloodshed, Weapons, Witchcraft.

Okay, maybe this doesn't affect everyone, but what is the point behind all this? It makes no sense. I read a few things of Finnish parents with their children in the NY Public School system, and pretty much everyone said the different thing.

Some agreed, some said its bullshit, a lot said this is wrong, some said this is just a guideline that doesn't affect anything.

But what's really going on there, in a city of 1,1 Million students?

i mean i understand a lot of that, some of it seems pretty dumb, but its sounds more like topics that should generally be avoided rather things that CANNOT be mentioned. just to keep things level for the ridiculous things people believe in / are afraid of.

yo dude they used the word "Gambling" on the ACT, lets go gamble our lives away once we have a wife and kids!

I love it how we try to not piss people off, you just ending up pissing EVERYONE off. I also love it how people (mostly politicians) have to overexagerate everything from putting the seat down to the toilet (get the reference) to how to dress. You know what I dont even consider myself on this planet so I just get a kick out of this!

someone needs to draw the line at what you can try to sensor and what just becomes stupid and pointless that doesn't actually offend anyone. This is in the latter category.

SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK MUSIC. I can understand some stuff that can object peoples beliefs, but those people shouldn't be so offended by the mere mentioning of that word/topic. I see some things like this and wish that people weren't so soft and quick to ban things. And then there is stuff that people just want to avoid in general because theyre insecure of it

meh, I think it's a fair choice. When I was in high school words or discussions did pop up often that were just plain uncalled for or ridiculous. It's not an attempt to shield children from anything, the school system probably knows that kids get a decent amount of exposure to these topics on a daily basis through the media and other sources. I really don't think this will do any harm.

I think the main idea behind this list was that NYC is so multicultural, and imbued with so many different aspects and outlooks at life.

Still, seems fucking crazy to me that something like this is even mentioned, let alone sent as a guideline.

seems like they're trying to do away with creative, independent thinking.

who wants to be put through a well oiled education machine?

fuck daaaa ssssyyyystteeemmm

YEAH DUDE THOSE RICH SNOTTY KIDS CAN AFFORD THEM AND I CANT!!! IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY WHENEVER I HEAR THE WORD MENTIONED

WAIT A MINUTE HERE

ARE YOU SAYING THAT POOR KIDS CAN'T AFFORD LAPTOPS!?

THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY I MIGHT SWEDE MYSELF!!!

Lets take everything that might be bad in this world and sweep it under the rug.

Dont want the children to understand that the world isnt perfect and that there are alot of problems in it.

Its just better that we let them find out the hard way when they graduate and cant find a job or afford college.

seems reasonable to me. the government controls everything else in merica, whats a couple of words?

also look, Mike-o creating another thread based on 'merica, and how much we suck. was it a slow news day in Finland?

Political correctness needs to go, it's getting ridiculous.

It seems like whatever you say out loud had to make everyone feel special and wanted.

thats quite insensitive to those who appreciate political correctness.

you should try and be more understanding of those with beliefs that differ from yours.
