It really has become an absolute fucking joke.
You know what...maybe it always was (They DID decide to name them the Extreme Games after all...that's pretty much lame personified), but I was too young to see through the nonsense.
But, if nothing else, for years the "Extreme Games" was the only sort of attention that "Action Sports" really got. Remember, back in 95-96 (when I was 13ish and at the height of my interest in inline skating) there was no youtube, or any other means of really watching people compete in these types of sports.
Sooo...even though so much of the pageantry is cringe worthy and oh so corny, and the level of ridiculousness in terms of some of the events is constantly growing (I can't for the life of me understand the popularity of freestlye moto x...I get it....everyone does backflips...I'm over it), they have gotten some things right, and it's overall enjoyable to watch. For example, I looooove the decision to make street events a jam format, as opposed to the oldschool "run" format. The jam sessions really do capture the essence of skating and riding in terms of the whole one up manship. Annnnnnd, to totally contradict myself, the megaramp issss pretty fucking sick. I just watched Dave Mira throw a dub front.....wow. Theeeen I watched it in "MEGA-MO" and I was reminded of how lame the whole affair really is.
However, I would reeeeaaaally love to see rolling come back. I would love to see haffey, farmer, shima, and co. throw down on a jam style street course. I think the general public would be willing to ease off the relentless teasing if nothing else, as the level of riding is incredibly high.
