I think that the problem was that after the olympics, alot of members left. I dont know why, but i noticed the dissappearance of late night ns, and less posts and ppl online in general. Maybe bishop was right about the olympics ruining ns's vibe.

Once again I'll state that I support this. But I'm curious is if its for members or potential business partners. Because to me threads are derailed just as much by noob bashing, or just bashing in general, than they are by "OP is dildos". If I was a young, potential member that would scare me off more than the lame jokes. So many people are credited with making good posts, but those are just posts ridiculing OP for being wrong or a reply for being wrong and then from there the thread is derailed or OP doesn't come back.
This website has a huge issue on accepting different opinions. Even when people help, they post it in a way to show superiority, not to be helpful. Or realizing that if the OP thought he knew everything, he wouldn't have posted the question in the first place. And enough with the "I'm a mod, I'm a better member. Or I donated, I'm a better member and my post holds more value". That stuff means nothing.
In short, I would look at that issue more than the dumb jokes if you're choosing to up moderation.

We don't want more trolls. We want more good members. Removing the clutter, prejudice, and thread derailing is one method we're using to change this.

Has anyone noticed that the influx of shitty members and threads coincides rather well with the introduction and growing popularity of sites dedicated to just forum use like 4chan and reddit?
How about we ban all the kids who come on here only to treat it like 4chan/reddit? Before NS was comprised only of kids who loved skiing. Now it's just a bunch of jackass kids who are slightly interested in skiing but get most of their joy from going on pointless forum sites like the ones mentioned above. Then when they come on NS, its just to act like they do on those sites. The annoying shit you're writing about like, "OP is gay" is all from kids who spend most of their time on those sites. Just ban those jackasses and tell them to go on 4chan if they want to post. It won't make a difference to them.
The sad part is that they try really hard to pretend they don't care but their social lives seem to mainly exist on forums so they have to take it seriously... which is why you see only those 4chan fanboys getting upset over new rules that the mods probably won't enforce.

Been saying this for a long time. I don't know how practical it is, or if that's how you do it exactly, but I definitely agree that the people suck are the forum addicts as oppose to the ski addicts. That's a big generalization and all "skiersfirst" people aren't cool, and all forum first people aren't lame, but there's definitely a correlation between what's changed about NS and the development of forums as a "thing" has grown.
Reading some WSHH comments sometimes it's scary how similar they are, minus the blatant race baiting.

Just to address en masse the bunch of people who have mentioned it, the idea of adopting a policy of just removing all the members we see as part of the problem has been discussed. But the executive decision was made that that was not how we're going to solve the problem at this stage.

I was honestly 150% for this before I got banned for some pretty funny shit that I thought was totally innocent considering I had just said I was all for it. I don't understand why people get personally offended about this shit. If you get away with that just because everyone likes your ski touring posts or whatever, when about 5 other people got banned in this thread for basically the same thing in varying degrees, it'd be pretty hypocritical of us. But come on, you were banned for like 12 hours, rather than taking that sort of thing as a slap in the face and making a long offended post, maybe the better reaction is "shit, right, probably shouldn't have done that, oh well, moving on".

No decisions have been made on that, but for transparency's sake that's where we're at.

Bishop, you talk about your rebellion, about making skiing bad ass instead of the crap it was in the 90's, the problem is that with rebellion like that comes things like NSG. Real skiing has always had that alternative culture that is pretty crazy and that "mature adults" don't really appreciate/understand. My mom is super conservative (anti alcohol, partying, weed, stupid sex, everything NSG stands for basically) but she has always understood and loved skiing culture because she grew up skiing in the '80's when skiing was all about loving life. Skiing is, or should be an expression of excitement, of happiness. Skiing should be living life to the fullest and with that comes things like alcohol and partying and "wild youth". I am not condoning those things but they are undeniably part of skiing
If the status quo ever fully condones my skiing I will be doing something wrong. I want my life, and by extension my skiing to be "extreme" I want to love life and skiing so much that others don't get it. To steal a quote, life is a "riot and a dance" if you aren't getting crazy you aren't doing it right. Don't let others' opinions shift your opinion of NSG.
That said, NSG is a pile of crap, period, fact. It is not an extension of the joy and excitement of skiing. however I would say that it is about 25% of the threads in there that actually suck. The rest just have a few crappy posts. In a perfect world NS would grow out of that crap, NSG would evolve and grow up with us. Of course skiing will always have that younger generation though. There will always be kids saying to "pee in her butt." That's just part of life.
The question is how we deal with it? do you marginalize NSG, try to make it less of a focus on the site? do you nuke it? do you moderate it more aggressively? I think all of those solutions have some merit but none of them get it all the way right. I don't have a full solution other than to present a good example and reward quality content.
In conclusion. Screw being "mature" skiing is too rad to be stuck up. Skiers will never conform to the standards of people who love life less than us. On the flip side, people should never have a problem with us because we are stupid or mean or jerks. I want to shock people with stoke, not with suck. NSG needs a reform, not necessarily of content but of attitude. Why are we being "crazy" or "stupid" is it because we love life and skiing or is it because we are shallow people?
