NEW Karma system!

haha wtf #2? mad street cred?

i think the new members page is real dope, but the "karma points" numbers def need to be scaled down.

do you think this karma system will turn away new members? like signing up a new account and seeing everybody else having hundred of thousands of points compared to your zero, couldn't that be seen as unwelcoming? like thinking "we'll how the hell am i ever gonna reach that?" just curious.

I like ryno's idea with spaces so we can tell what number we have, and I think making a max would make karma more representative. maybe out of 1000, and make some decimals if the system makes it that specific?

to be honest the new numbers are just way to much if you just glance at a member it is way to easy for 115879 to look the same as 1137284 even though the second one is larger by a factor of 10. if you could make it out of 1000 it would be much more user friendly. it is relatively easy to spot the difference between 95 and 950.

I also don't like it because both samcaylor and rowen have higher karma then me now and thats just not right. (I used to be higher) yea fuck you sam and rowen.

The whole registration date should be a factor too... I am sick of seeing people being called a "noob" just because they don't have tones of worthless posts!

sweet its pretty nice I think, but the only bad thing I see at the moment is that the numbers are pretty large, could the end result just be divided by a factor of 100 or something?

also the members page is sick, but at the moment the member search is still only displaying the first 100 or 50 (can't remember which) but its showing that you can move onto the next page of results. but when you click you just go back to the member page

When will the "others rate me" be implemented in your profile? I'm really curious to see, and it hasn't worked since day 1 of karma

so if i'm #6 on all of NS does that mean i get a cookie? OR a free prize bag??? hah, why i am i 6th

All your questions and concerns are good one... at least this time though I feel like more people are stoked on it!

I think the commas would be a good addition definitely to make it easier to figure out.

The problem about the massive numbers is tricky... people want to see it change, and they hate it when everyone is so close together, but with almost 110,000 members, rating out of 1,000 would leave many people right together.

If we had decimals, it'd be an equally big number just with a decimal in it.

Sometimes if you rank someone a 7 and their karma goes down, that might mean that they had a 10 before.

The issue of WHAT is used to calculate the karma is easy to change. So that one is something we can play with over time. However, each time we make a big change like this to the system, we've got to give it a bit to get used to it! Remember, anything new on the internet is generally hated at first, and then as you get used to it you'll see the benefits.

So give it a chance, use it and in a couple of weeks we'll re-assess!

That's a good call, a lot of people are really active on the site without posting on the forums, i.e. posting picture and videos. I guess this gives points too, but registration date should be considered.. and maybe post count should count a bit less, I feel like when everybody will see their karma going up everytime they post a thing, we'll have a major post whoring epidemy

There is no upper limit. You get points for many kinds of contributions. Theoretically the database field would fill up at 8 billion karma points. But if we ever hit that, we can just make the field bigger. ;)

yeah i def agree with that, and does the karma fluctuate w/o people having to vote or are others just voting me down cuz my karma has just been going down. and i didnt think i was that much of a problem on this site haha.

I'm confused, before 50 was an easy point to see when someone was bad, or had negative karma, but now I have no guidelines! I can't tell the difference between good or bad.

Can it be adjusted a little? If I rate anyone with high karma I have to give them 10 for it to go up.

That simply means they already have a high rating from others. You can see averages in the top 100. Click on names that you know that think are good or bad and assign them your rating. The more user ratings entered, the more the score will move up or down,

The top 100 seems kind of strange, but I like the new system a lot. I agree with the idea of spaces or commas to make the big numbers easier to read at a glance.

I also think that we still need to figure out the whole making the good buyer/seller list into some sort of feedback section or whatever, because I don't think that karma alone is a great indication of how well a transaction would work or how man sales they have been a part of before.

and Jacob who i'm pretty sure left NS?

Does recent login have anything to do with the logarithm?

So...for some people that are at like 10,000...when I rate them 10, they go up around 300-400 at a time. But often when I rate people that are around 500ish, they only go up like 40. I thought this was just because they haven't been rated much, but I've also had it happen completely vice versa. How come the karma fluctuates differently for everyone?

I am fairly certain that if a member has only a couple of other user ratings your rating will affect it a lot. The converse is true, if a member has a lot of other member ratings then your rating won't affect as much. Think averages.

Doug,

Just thought of something. It would be great if somehow you could go through the "Good Buyers/Sellers" thread and factor all the good transactions posted in there into the buyers/sellers karma ratings. I definitely think that completing a good transaction with another member of newschoolers is just as important if not more than posting a video or a bunch of photos, and should affect your karma as such.

Anyone else think this makes sense?

i think there should be a separate categorie, say on their profile, for their buyer and seller karma ratings...

there are many members who do neither, so why should their karma be any lower than those who do?

i don't have a paypal account, nor any credit cards, so i can't buy or sell. same goes for many other minors...

i think it's a good idea, but it should be separate from regular karma.

Anyone,

Could you please let me know where BAD karma, and GOOD karma starts. Before we had 50 as a balance point, what is it now? All I see is a mass of numbers.
