New Jersey City Makes It Illegal to Text While Walking ($85 fine)

It doesn't need to be illegal.

If you are so dumb as to where you are running into shit and walking into streets while cars aren't stopped for you while you're texting you deserve to get hit.

Natural Selection

I wouldn't take it that far, even you must have been distracted at some point in your life where things could have ended badly? A society which grants immersive and distractive gadgets for pedestrians, drivers etc. is not a perfect one.

But the 85$ fine? That's just straight up monetizing and greedy bullshit.

at first i thought you had somehow confused Jeresy City with something called New Jersey City, but then I realized that you meant a city in New Jeresy.

I think you meant to say that the worlds problem is that we have a bunch of dumb people in charge of a bunch of dumber people.

Texting while walking is dangerous as fuck. Convince yourself

I get where you're coming from, but it seems like the law was directed towards people not paying attention when crossing streets etc...situations where you should pay attention to your surroundings. And its stupid that we need a law that tells us we should be paying attention to our surroundings.

I agree. Successful multitaskers will come out on top, the unfortunate few people will hurt themselves.Life goes on, no need for an 85$ ticket.

However it's very unfortunate for the driver who hits the texting citizen.

Fuckin text and walk who gives a shit. It's not like you're endangering anyone like drivers are. That's a weak law, I want to go there and see all the idiots standing still on their phones

There should not be laws protecting us from ourselves *cough*seatbeltlaws*cough*. If you die from doing something dumb, who gives a shit, you did it to yourself.

Grey area is that some of these morons who are completely unaware of their surroundings while they are so absorbed in their phones do create dangerous situations for others.

What happens when one of these cell-phone absorbed fools steps out into the street without paying much attention. The on-coming car swerves and loses control and gets into an accident. This puts an innocent person at risk over someone elses poor choices.

The law speaks volumes as to how self-absorbed our current society is and how people have become so attached to their phones.

-"Last year, 74 pedestrians were struck and two people were killed in Fort Lee, a city of 35,000, just across the Hudson River from New York City."

-"In 2008, according to an Ohio State University study, more than 1,000 people — double the previous year’s number — visited emergency rooms after they were injured while walking and talking on the telephone."

-"Researchers at Stony Brook University in New York found that texters were 60 percent more likely to veer off line than those walking and not texting."

I'd like to see some more on the Ohio State study but that is a substantial increase. Curious if there are other factors that could be attributed to something other than phone distraction.

Hahaha I love how this is "breaking news" in the USA. When can the media focus on important things. Lol. And the texting while walking law is stupid. Just the government trying to make another thing illegal.
