i will likely be emialing you soon, when i gte more time.....since i am very intrested in the designe of you skis and if you knew any thing about what your turning radius and whatnot would be beofre you built the skis. I like how the press was made too, and did you use abs sidewalls? i couldn't tell, but it dind't look like it. And what is your wood core? what type of wood...ok soryr i will just emial you in a couple of days! thansk!

sweet project. site looks good but you need to change the title. at the top of my browser it just says 'adobe go live 5' or some shit :p

yeah, i noticed the golive thing, hahahaha, OOPS

I will add some more content on the details of the construction too (probably tomorrow) explaining the materials and all that.

but to answer your question quickly, yes, the sidewalls are ABS.

Nice job man. Those skis look just like the first couple of pairs I've made - black with the white sidewalls. I noticed that you're somewhere around Seattle right? I've got a cousin who's making his own skis around that area with some friends. By the way, why didn't you vertically laminate your core?

If you guys want to learn how to make skis, it's not hard or not even that expensive. A site is coming up soon that'll teach you how - for free. No videos or any of that bullshit to buy. To make a ski (including all of the equipment) costs as much as a regular ski costs and the results you get are pretty awesome. Corporate skiing sucks.

what do you mean vertically laminate the core? like a few layers?

i used one solid piece of wood, and it was a bitch to work with (too thick)

crystal guy, I will be at snoqualmie friday.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

well, from your pics it seems like you took a single piece of wood and simply profiled it right? Normally, you would take that single piece of wood and rip it into strips (1/2' - 1')with your tablesaw. Then you would glue/laminate these strips together. This way you elimanate all the weaknesses of the knots and other irregularities. It also makes your ski a lot stiffer torsionally.

nice job sean, website looks good too. hopefully i can do something very similar for a project down here at school

my school mates always said that they would fuck anything that could walk. i never saw why i had to limit myself.

thats pretty sweet! looks like a lot of work, but props for figuring it all out and coming up with some sick looking skis.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
watch out I have BADD
looks sick
Hopefully I will be skiing the Big K in VT until January, and the other K in CA for the rest of the season.
Oh, I get what you're talking about billy bomba.
I will probably do that for the next ski. For this first one I used poplar for the wood. It was about $8 for the piece, where as maple was about $30. The poplar seems ok, not as hard as maple, but I made it very thick so its very stiff.
For the next one I might do maple and poplar strips, just like you said.
For now, I won't be having any for sale. If I really get everything nailed down by the last pair (I've only got enough material from K2 to make 3 more skis) and the whole process becomes much more streamlined, I will think about producing a number of pairs. Not sure what the cost would be, I'd have to think about that some more. Much MUCH cheaper than any other equivalent ski on the market, but I couldn't garuntee them at all... afterall, they are homemade!
Thanks again for the comments, keep them coming. Send any major questions to the email on the site:
stumpyengineering@hotmail.com
I will be posting the questions I get and answers to them on the site.
that's sweet man! how much does it cost you to make a pair? (even though I know you only finished one ski so far)
Screw this I'm going skiing
I need to go through everything to figure out the exact cost.
I spent more money in things like the press, etc.
The materials aren't so bad, carbon fiber's pricey though! But sexy as hell!
ah man thats so cool!
Props to you man!
but I thought crabon fiber didnt bend!? Like if it bended, well it would pop back to place
its got plenty of flex in it for a ski. its tough stuff, brittle if bent too much, but taken in short lengths (looking at a short section of ski) it really doesn't flex all that much.
thats awsome man , how long did it take in total ?
'i just rented good will hunting , how is it?'
'lets put it this way, even matt damon cant make it suck.'
'matt damon? hes in con air right?'
'yes , yes he is.'
so you have only made one ski? not even a pair of skis yet? and you have material for 3 skis? or 3 pairs of skis? I think i am gonan tyr and get my mateail from Prior cuz my dad puts in orbers for his lodge, so i can probally work out some deal with materials...but i'll be looking forward to seeing the updated site with more info soon. Didd you do this for any skool credit? or was it just .....for fun? i was gonan just do it for fun, but now i can do it for skool too, which means i'll do a better job.
HÉLmµT- HiGh SNow!
no school credit, it was just for fun.
meh, steel is easiest and cheapest!
especially if you're gonna be railing them, no need to put anything expensive on there.
