Musical Geniuses that made it

Thread title is pretty self explanatory, post musicians that are exceptionally talented that did not go overlooked in today's society where many popular "artists" don't write any of their own stuff, everything is edited like crazy, and even with all of that help the music still sounds like shit.

I am going to have to start out with

n2235226_37617803_6280.jpg

streetlight manifesto and

ben-folds-110.jpg

this guy

Both are exceptional at writing lyrics, instrumentals, and ability to perform their work live

Oh, and I forgot, whether or not you like their music, just about every member in Dave Matthews Band is extraordinarily talented, especially Tim Reynolds (not officially in the band but he tours with them all of the time) and the Bass player who joined the band at like 16 was apparently a prodigy.

Thom Yorke/Radiohead. You can't argue that guy's musical geniusness.
Him and probably Conor Oberst

The Beatles
/thread.
Every single one of those guys were talented beyond any of todays standards. And to have them all in one band, well, you see the outcome on music.

Can someone please define talented for this discussion?

The Beatles were not talented musically. They werent exceptional guitar players or bassists or drummers. They were fucking good at making music that appealed to basically everyone. Same goes for most of the artists that have been mentioned in this thread. MGMT? talented? fuck no, they're just good at making catchy music.

on topic though... Mark Knopfler... Eric Clapton... two of the best guitarists of all time.

id disagree the beatles were in no way attempting to make hits. think about how different every one of their albums were, with the exception of rubber soul to revolver. those two were quite similar but other than that, every album they were being more experimental and pushing the boundaries of music beyond what anyone was doing then.

Well, let me put it this way. The Beatles is the one band, and I honestly think ONLY band, that is loved by all generations. Their music is so wide ranging, every Beatles song has a way of doing exactly what you want it to do. You cannot possibly put them down.

MGMT is also the same way, their music is not mindless and catchy, it has beats and sounds to it aren't found anywhere else really. In the digital generation, to be able to do something different with beats and electronic type music is pretty awesome. Music doesn't have to be this massively complex epic thing, MGMT makes simple awesome music.

My vote: Miley Cirus.

But really, here are some people I love:

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

Prince

The Rolling Stones(They deserve it for merely kicking so much ass for so long)

Thom "Christ" Yorke

Trent Reznor

Bob Dylan

Chopin

Hate on bright eyes and any of his music all you want, but you can't deny that he's one of the most talented songwriters of this generation. Go listen to either one of his solo albums

the beatles (mostly paul and john) were amazing song writers. fact. plus they got to the point where they played all kinds of different instruments, for example paul plays drums on a couple songs, and the ballad of john and yoko is just paul and john doing everything

also dont ever compare the beatles to MGMT again (no offense MGMT fans)

Gonna have to agree with this . . . . it doesn't take a genius to know that someone like Hendrix or Clapton (both who experienced just a fraction of the success/popularity of what the Beatles achieved), has way more musical talent that any of the Beatles . . . . . the Beatles were extremely innovative and Paul/John were great songwriters . . . . but musically talented? Not compared to the generations that followed.
My votes: A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, DragonForce ( I hate em' too but you know they're good), Clapton . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Are you kids retarded? Musical talent doesn't pertain to how fast you can move your fingers. Being a good songwriter trumps physical dexterity, any day. Playing the right note will sound better than playing 20 extraneous ones; why do you think metal sounds like shit most of the time? Because it has no depth.

^.... says the guy that listens to MGMT.
If you knew your ass from your elbow you'd realize that there are very few people that still hold songwriting to be an art. You'd also realize that he knows his shit and is respected far beyond that pussy emo community. It's disappointing that people mock good songwriting.
That being said, I can agree with you on your call regarding Trent Reznor, Bob Dylan, and Thom Yorke.

if song writing falls under musical talent then yes, the beatles were talented. if not, then no.

i was thinking along the lines of pure musical ability.

what about Pink Floyd? While a lot of their sound had quite a bit to do with the sound engineering, David Gilmour and Roger Waters both are really versatile musicians, who were also really good song writers. And Jimi Hendrix is amazing also. Fucking nuts guitarist, and to anyone who hasn't, listen to "first rays of the new rising sun." Jimi came through with some SICK lyrical efforts.

I understand that, I just cannot get myself to get past his horrible whiny voice. Something about it just drives in insane and takes away from the lyrical part entirely.

A good song should be well rounded in terms of lyrics, the music itself, and the vocals. I'll give you a prime example, one of my favorite songs ever is Sympathy for the Devil. It has been heard a ton of times, and almost overplayed, but the complexity of it and beauty within the song is fucking amazing. The lyrics, the jungle-like raw sound, its all over the place but still there. On every level, it embodies the theme it is trying to represent. Conner has this pussy awful voice that pigeon holes him into one category, while Mick Jagger can do anything.

ok i can hear you on that one. I respect your opinion and appreciate the fact that you sound well informed.

frank turner has being trying to break through recently and he is actually really good, possibly my favourite artist at the moment, solid lyrics

people haven't heard of him, but when they do they really like him

David Gray, that guy is easily one of the best writers of our time for lyrics, plays mean guitar and piano. genius.

When I think of an outstanding musician, I think of it like this.

If I can put on my headphones, put on an album, and pick up a book. And when the album ends...I'm still on the first sentence of the book. That's a great musician to me.

My first though for this thread was John Butler. But someone already mentioned it. John Mayer was my second choice. Again, already chosen. So here's a video of John Butler instead.

And another artist that I doesn't get as much recognition for this skills, Keith Urban, jamming with John Butler.
