'...and not putting anything into updating park standards.'
When I read that I almost choked on my pizza. Now I will fully agree that Whistler is not at the forefront of the terrain park scene anymore but no one is doing better than mammoth. And look at Tremblant and Blue Mountain (2 new superpipes) in the east.
And yes, the lift ticket prices are incredibly high but people pay them because they have the best resorts. If Whistler was charging too much and no one came, they would lower prices. Last Christmas time in whistler, the 26th and 27th of December, were the busiest days in Whistler History. Over 27,000 skiers on the mountains (the line up to the blackcomb gondola was past Second Cup). Whistler (and its owners Intrawest) are doing everything a good business should. If they can charge $67 a lift ticket and people will still pay it, why wouldn't they? Vails lift tickets are about the same only in american dollars. Making it about $100 cdn to ski there. They aren't owned by Intrawest.
Skiing is a wealthy persons sport, you have to realize that. And (I've said this too many times already): Skiing, like any sport, is a Business.
Intrawest is a smart company and I love their resorts. For the limited time that I worked for them in Whistler (only 1 season) they really seem to have their shit together.
Anyways I just kinda rambled on there for a bit... but who cares, thats my opinion.
peace,
ck
