Smithers British Columbia (3 hours from where I live :) will be a multi-million dollar resort sometime. Thanks to the folks that own Whistler that is. It surprised me that a town of maybe 8,000-10,000 people would be the location of something like this but... now I want to move there. Not to mention that they've been skiing for like, a month there with a 1m+ base already and 20 cm of new snow last time I checked.

'Dude! That's looks like soup! No joke, I see celery!'

Ummm A 1 Meter base plus isn't that good right now... but there is no snow anyway so whatever, and yeah The Intrawest people who own whistler rule, but because of the shity start to this season, they have lost millions!

Plans may have been put on the back burner for now but when it does start up, It's all about hitting it up before it gets are touristy as Whistler.

the intrawest people dont rule. they are sniveling little fucks who have pleasure in taking money from poor skiers and not putting anything into updating park standards.

yah, those fuckers. they even close the good park for the prime time spring riding. they do alot of good for whistler, but it doesn't atone for the bad.

I believe intrawest is at the fore front of building the worlds best Parks. When I think of Great Parks I think Blackcomb and Mammoth and intrawest owns them both.

life=ski

their prices are just ridiculous though...

'...and not putting anything into updating park standards.'

When I read that I almost choked on my pizza. Now I will fully agree that Whistler is not at the forefront of the terrain park scene anymore but no one is doing better than mammoth. And look at Tremblant and Blue Mountain (2 new superpipes) in the east.

And yes, the lift ticket prices are incredibly high but people pay them because they have the best resorts. If Whistler was charging too much and no one came, they would lower prices. Last Christmas time in whistler, the 26th and 27th of December, were the busiest days in Whistler History. Over 27,000 skiers on the mountains (the line up to the blackcomb gondola was past Second Cup). Whistler (and its owners Intrawest) are doing everything a good business should. If they can charge $67 a lift ticket and people will still pay it, why wouldn't they? Vails lift tickets are about the same only in american dollars. Making it about $100 cdn to ski there. They aren't owned by Intrawest.

Skiing is a wealthy persons sport, you have to realize that. And (I've said this too many times already): Skiing, like any sport, is a Business.

Intrawest is a smart company and I love their resorts. For the limited time that I worked for them in Whistler (only 1 season) they really seem to have their shit together.

Anyways I just kinda rambled on there for a bit... but who cares, thats my opinion.

peace,

ck

for the last time - intrawest does not run mammoth or even really influence any of the decisions made. Mammoth park is run by mammoth, not intrawest

the ticket prices are high because its not cheap to run a resort and secondly the insurence for whislter has got to be huge. if u get hurt in the upper park bad enough u get a heli ride down to the bottom

'for the last time - intrawest does not run mammoth or even really influence any of the decisions made. Mammoth park is run by mammoth, not intrawest'

Intarwest does not directly run parks anywhere, they run ski resorts. and then in turn the ski resorts higher people to run parks. the people who run and own intawest are very smart shareholders who make weel thought out desisions. why do you think that they are one of the biggest companys in skiing?

intrawest does run ski resorts, just not mammoth.

mammothpunks: true, mammoth probably does control its own resort operations side (i say probably because I dont know for sure) but intrawest has most likely helped mammoths park by allowing the entire resort to have a larger operating budget (therefore giving more money to build rails, buy a 22ft superpipe dragon, etc). I believe its the same with Blue Mountain but you'd have to ask Jodi about that one.

Intrawest bought Mt. Arrowsmith on Vancouver Island, if you have ever heard of it. There should be some big changes going on there in the next 5 years. I used to hike up and ski there in august, they have some steep terrain. This resort and the one near smithers are going to be great. You will see.

Yeah Mt Arrowsmith has some killer shit up around the top...Too bad management suct and had to close it down like 4 years ago...same with forbidden but that place sucks anyway

Tickets arent that much. Blue Mt. is like 40 bucks and thats canadian. Its 40 bucks american in the big (by Michigan standards) Michigan places.
