anybody who ever said the beatles are overated and didn't change music at all is a dumbass. please tell me one band that you think has better musicians and I guarentee that that band holds the beatles in the highest regards and they probabbly wouldnt be the same without the beatles.

there will never be another band like the beatles. not to mention all the solo shit that mccartney, lennon and harrison put out afterwards.

...

Well, you're correct about the simple beat thing. The White Stripes, particularly Jack (vocals, guitar), aim to have their music be as simple as possible--a real raw sound with little refinement. That's the sound they were going for.

I'm not saying I like it, but they accomplished their objective.

im just stating my opinion here so dont get mad that i am pretty pissed. HOW IN THE WORLD COULD YOU PUT DOWN THE BEATLES. they are the most influential band EVER. It wasn't because they were the most talented musicians out there. Its because of their songwriting. They knew exactly how to do things and how to write music. In every single. EVERY single interview of a musician i have read whenever they are asked a question about who their influences are, they all had the Beatles in there somewhere, Yesterday is the most covered song ever, and look at how long they have endured over time, All the albums they came out with, how long they played for. Paul Mccartney is still playing shows and sounding great. The beatles also did basically start the British Invasion and whoever says they didn't start rock and roll is incredibly naive. The beatles are the dividing point between the pop sixties music and the psychedelic/rock music. Although i do agree that sgt. peppers almost ruined psychedelic music because of this magazine i read. Sgt. peppers was so big and because that was the craze a lot of really good psychedelic music was shielded, sort of ruining it because after that it was over. And as for whoever said zeppelin, im not even gonna go there. but personally one overrated person i think was Eric Clapton, Cream was awesome but not Clapton. just personally though

NUMBER ONE: first of all, despite popular belief the beatles were not the FIRST band to cross the ocean. they were the first band to cross and go big. with pop music. they played good pop mainstream music. and were a huge hit.

NUMBER TWO: they did NOT, DID NOT FUCKING EVEN COME CLOSE, to creating the pyschedelic rock wave AT ALL. that shit started in the BEAT generation on the west coast and was carried out by the grateful dead and the likes of such. THE BEATLES pseudo-ized pysche music and made it mainstream. You have got to be pretty fucking ignorant to believe the beatles played a key part in the creation of that genre. they just candy coated it for consumption by the mainstream popular music fans.

NUMBER THREE: they didn't invent rock and roll at all. rock and roll came long before them. LONG before. they made rock and roll popular.

so really their credible feat was being the first big band out of europe to succeed in the US. who gives a shit? I don't. That very well could have been any other band.

NOT TO SAY, that the beatles are not a band of there own. because they are and they made a lot of great music. They did have a big influence on the future of music, and they did write some really great songs. I like the beatles, they are fucking great! But they are OVERRATED.

To thisangelicrage. I dont know if your post was to me but i never said that the beatles invented psychedelic, i just think of them as the dividing point between all of the poppy music and the more rock music. and i never said they played a key part in that genre. and i was wondering if you could give me some examples of rock and roll bands that were before the beatles besides elvis, just curious. i dont know about you but i dont hear too many people telling me that they are so great because they succeded and came from europe, if they were american they would have been just as big. and you saying that anybody could have done that is false because sure, anybody could have had a hit or two but to come out with all that music and be successful over such a long period of time, even when they stopped playing concerts in 69 or something. yes that is an incredible feat

U2. Period.

Over in the UK, radio and tv is like, they're the best band in the world blah blah. And really, they're a pile of wank.

Maybe different over there?, I dunno if they're rated as highly.

Lauren... Number 4 (or 5 or 6, not sure which one):

Ringo is definitly not up to the level of the rest of the band. His beats are lame, and don't do justice to the music half of the time. The other half, the beat is simple, but perfect for the songs.

open up, we're coming inside. What's it feel like to know you're gonna die?

This thread is obviously going to be so opinionated. People will just argue back and forth about how great a band is or how bad they are.

This burrito is delish, but it is filling

The beatles quite simply played the most basic form of music. (4/4 beats in all their songs, simple guitar riffs)

Yet their ability to create melodic music was uncomparable to almost any band out there. Many stated that the beatles were the best melody writters since Franz Schubert.

What morons are saying the Beatles. They are without question the most influential band ever. You keep saying they didnt invent rock and roll, thats true, but they tok it somewhere. Theyre responsible for so much music. If you think for one second theyre overrated, thats ridiculous. And for what you say about psychadelic rock, show me any song recorded befroe late 1965 that is more psychadelic than Tomorrow Never Knows.

I agree, Master of Puppets is still one of my favorite cd's, hell, our local music star is named after Orion (instrumental). I just think they are a little over rated. Frankly I didn't care about the napster thing at all.

im not even going to start on the beatles fight, but even rollingstone magazine said they are one of the only bands ACCURATELY rated. end of story.

and i know you guys might be pissed...but nirvana.

ya they were good and all and made some awesome tunes,

but it wasnt nearly as amazing and influential as some people say.

I agree with everything you're saying, The Beatles are an awesome band, i would rank them in my top 2 favorites, however they are overrated. They did start the british invasion though. But who really cares about the british invasion, all the other bands that were imported from England sucked save the Beatles.

Oh God yes, the Rolling Stones fucking BLEW.

No, really, are you actually serious?

dude, Sabboth is from England, i believe, and they def do not suck.

And what does everyone have against Metallica, they rock!

musically overrated ??

The Beatles' influence on rock music and world culture was -- and remains -- profound. Prior to their emergence as pop superstars, it was common for rock bands to rely on professional songwriters for their material (the Brill Building in New York City was a source of many hit singles in the early 1960s), and to rely heavily on studio musicians for their recordings.

It has been said that after the Beatles' initial appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, many who saw them perform were inspired to quickly form rock groups. The Byrds are one of innumerable groups of that era who cite seeing A Hard Day's Night as one of their major sources of inspiration.

Like The Shadows before them, The Beatles created a new paradigm for performers in popular music. Their multiple talents enabled them to combine the instrumental abilities of groups like The Shadows, the vocal harmony singing of acts such as The Everly Brothers and a songwriting strength of writer-performers like Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan.

Their concert performances in the mid-1960s electrified audiences and provided a huge burst of inspiration for local musicians in the countries they visited. Within a few months of their June 1964 visit to Australia, The Beatles' influence had transformed the local pop scene and saw the creation of literally hundreds of Beatle-style bands around the country. A similar scene was enacted, albeit on a smaller scale, in New Zealand.

From the 1960s, when the band was still recording and performing, to this very day, the Beatles have inspired many musicians, from disparate musical genres, but certainly not limited to Oasis, Everclear, The Brodsky Quartet, Opeth, MxPx, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, King's X, Jerry Garcia, Sting, Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, Neil Diamond, Brad Mehldau, Rush, Jimi Hendrix, Skid Row, Buddy Miller, Alice Cooper, Nirvana, Jeff Lynne and ELO, Rich Mullins, Kiss, Los Lobos, Very Large Array, Queensrÿche, Guns N' Roses, Moxy Früvous, Run DMC, and Aerosmith; the list of musicians who have covered Beatles' songs would certainly be vast.

OK take all of that ^ and add that other kids post "anybody who ever said the beatles are overated and didn't change music at all is a dumbass. please tell me one band that you think has better musicians and I guarentee that that band holds the beatles in the highest regards and they probabbly wouldnt be the same without the beatles.

and these are the most correct members currently on NS. nobody fuck with the beatles.

back to the original

what is this highest reguards shit you keep talking about?! whether every great musician in the past 3 decades woships the beatles or not it doesn't change the fact that a lot of them can outplay the members of the beatles. to me being a great musician has little to nothing to do with who respects you and to what extent.

and yes the beatles may have transformed pop music-- but i don't really find that as much of a feat. true at the time it was revolutionary, but i also thing 'the right place at the right time' played a big part in the beatles' initial succes. the backstreet boys sold record amount of albums and had a fanbase bigger than the dead... but does that make them not suck? no they suck balls.

i'm not saying the beatles aren't good. i love the beatles. i just think the feats in which they ARE credible are unimpressive. thus overrated.

i think people often confuse being overrated and being bad.

that's just my opinion. if you dig pop music and breaking ground in genres, that's cool. it's obviously something i've never done... i just have more of a love for raw musicianship.

-Lauren

we're not talking about how talented they are, sure lennon couldn't rip a huge solo but it was their songwriting that did it. And how many great songs they came out with, they knew exactly where to put things in their songs and they actually played instruments unlike the backstreet boys, and do you still hear people talking about the backstreet boys today. no, of course not because they blew nuts, I guess you just have to either understand this, or not. but if you talk to any older person who lived during that era they will have understood how big of an impact on everyones lives the beatles had, so maybe some of you just don't get it.

the point I was making was all else aside what makes a band good is musicianship. and as for songwriting i can think of quite a few people who could play just as well if not better than lennon and write just as well if not better too. and don't even give me that shit about you had to be there. you weren't there were you? you don't think i've ever talked to someone who lived through that period? for christ's sake my dad met the beatles, my dad met hendrix, my dad toured with the dead with me as a baby.... ever heard the song ride, captain ride? my dad wrote it! i clearly understand the point everyone else is making and respect your opinion obviously, but all else aside the raw musicianship isn't what it may be cracked up to be when it comes to the beatles.

-Lauren

are you telling me that your dad thinks the beatles are overrated
