Monana Skiing

I'm plannin a ski trip out to montana this year, and im goin in to bozeman to stay with my sister, all the locals there say bridger is the place to ski, but ive heard nothing but good about big sky. where do you guys suggest?

Bridger is amazing man, fresh snow for days after storms, tons of really good technical terrain, if you wanna hike you can reach SO much more terrain too. Big Sky is a really big resort, less technical terrain but more big open areas and stuff, but it definitely gets tracked out faster. Big Sky day ticket is like 70-80 while Bridger is like 40. Another resort to check out is moonlight basin, little bit different than bridger or big sky but lot of good shit there too. Big Sky and moonlight have the best parks but bridger has a little one too.

Everyone says that. I've skied there for 3 years and if you know where to go, it NEVER gets tracked out. Get to know some locals and learn where the goods are

Sorry 4 the dub post but nobody mentions bridger's park! It gets bigger every year and is going to be a lot bigger this year

haha agreed. i rode bridger in january last year and we had 4 days where we went to schlasmans (sp) and wore the beacons and had the time of my life. best pow ive ever ridden and it was only january. not tracked out at all

Eheath definitely wrong. Big Sky has fresh shit 2 weeks out past storms. If you can shred Moonlight and Big Sky, you can access 50 degree pitches of 3000 vert with perfect snow.

Bridger gets tracked out first run. Like mentioned, dope terrain but waay too fucking crowded.

Additionally, if you take the occasional toke Big Sky has at least 35 smoke huts (most of which are ganjolas)

lol you think you know you're shit cause you've gone to msu for 2 years? i grew up in montana man.

You obviously have no idea what your talkin about, AGAIN. Bozeman local fool. I've been shreddin lines here since you were shittin in your diapers.

Well, there are big sky locals and bridger locals, you're obviously a big sky guy, which is fine. They do have a ton of shacks though, ive only been to about 10 of them though, i always wanted to take a day and try to go to as many as possibly.

I live in Helena, MT but Bridger is my season pass mountain. Moonlight Basin is decent and the tickets are $57, Big Sky is overpriced for what it is. Bridger is by far the best for the money and gets better snow that Moonlight IMO. Bridger Bowl all the way, it doesn't get tracked out fast at all either, all those who said that definitely don't know the mountain.

Come to whitefish to ski! haha nah but big skys more of like a tourist mountain, and bridger bowls like the chill local ski hill

Agreed.

I will admit, the single best run that I have ever had was at Bridger. On deep days, that terrain is easily some of the best. And back in the day, Bridger really was the place to be. However now that Bozone has grown alot, the crowds are overtaking everything. I mean it's rad everyone is down to shred, however these days it really is first 2 runs or so before most zones are hit. Even out on past Trumans and all the way to above Alpine Lift, cliffs are gettin bombed out left and right early in the day.

But yes, smoke shack days are great for when the conditions are marginal. My personal record so far in one day is 14. I always run into extreme starvation problems at that point though.

moonlight has the best after ski lodge. the one towards the bottom of the pony life.

god dam i cant wait to go their in december for 2 weeks. its been 2 years since i have been in montana.

I agree, Wisconsin has some amazing mountains such as Wilmot (Matterhorn of the Midwest) Grand Geneva classiest resort this side of the midwest, and even Granite Peak one of the biggest resorts in the midwest...they even have trees!

When I lived there I always carried a trail map with all the shacks marked out on it, done 20ish in a day..................

A cool place to ski in Montana is Big Sky. I've got a friend there, Dan Greene. He's really cool, and is one of the teachers there. You should check out Big Sky there. 10 out of 10!

HahahhahahahAhhahahahahahahahahhaahahahahhaahhaahahhahaahahhaahahahahhhahahahahahaahahhaahahhahaaha. You have to be kidding me.....kid I've seen you ski. HE IS NOT A VALID SOURCE CONSIDERING HE CAN BARLEY SKI THROUGH THE PARK. Bridgers park sucks and always has.

Dude that statement was incorrect in so many ways.

Firstly Big sky way outranks Bridger Bowl in terrain offered. The A-Z Chutes, South Face, the Bowl, and the challenger chair area solidifies my statement on that one. Schlaushman's lift is a nice new addition to the resort now, but you need at least beacon to be able to ride the chair. If you don't you're shit out of luck.

Tracked out faster? Bullshit. While more people may go to Big sky than Bridger on weekends, it definitely has less people per square acre. There have even been instances at Bridger where they have turned cars away from the parking lot since there were so many people. Because it attracts so much of the college crowd, a powder day gets tracked out quickly. The Schlaushman's lift definitely weeds out the less experienced skiers, but with the amount of hardcore skiers at Bridger, there are still crowds to be had.

Ticket prices are definitely in Bridger's favor. On any budget, Bridger will definitely be the better choice. Big Sky is quite pricey for most people, and unless you plan on getting a season pass there, prob not worth it for a single day event.

Local vibes also go to Bridger. Can't top that with Big Sky.

So for your trip, go for most of the days at bridger, with maybe a day or two at Big Sky to mix things up a bit. Just don't ask eheath for help on this...

haha half of the terrain you named off for BS you need a beacon too. Schlaushmans all you need is a beacon and if you dont have a beacon there is a ton of other terrain.

Im not going to even address what you said about getting tracked out cause you said "weekends" any resort is going to get tracked fast one a weekend, 50% of the people who go on the weekends dont go during the week.

I just told him where i thought was good, obviously going to bridger and big sky would be the best.

I've personally never had myself checked for an avalanche beacon for hiking the A-Z chutes. Everything else I pretty much named is inbounds and not patroller-regulated. When the snowpack get's sketchy they probably require beacons for the A-Z chutes, but I myself have not had that problem in the times that I have been there. The ones I rattled off there definitely get's sugarcoated from advertisement and those seriously biased for Big Sky.

Of course there is plenty of terrain to ski other than Schlaushman's, I never said but since it was a large point brought up in this thread, I thought it would need to be addressed. I apologize for the confusion with you over that.

True point on the spread of locals visiting throughout the week, but you missed my point. Also don't throw out a 50% statistic just to make yourself sound smart, just saying "majority, or large part" will suffice. My point with the people is that the terrain (acres) to skier (population) ratio will largely be in favor of Big Sky most days of the year, regardless of how much snow dumped last night. I back this up with the equation below.

Big Sky: 5,000 acres / 2000 skiers = 2.5 skiers per acre.

Bridger Bowl: 2,000 acres / 2000 skiers = 1 skier per square acre

Of course this excludes backcountry so these numbers are off, but my point is made. Big sky needs to have 2 1/2 times the crowd of bridger for it to even it out. Don't hate me bro, hate the simple math involved.

Of course you only expressed your opinion on the matter, but that information you provided I believed was inaccurate. So I only expressed my own opinion on the matter.

Also the "haha" starting out your statement makes you look like an asshole, even on NS. Just my two cents.

Oh the endless big sky vs bridger battle. To the op both are great resorts just have fun whilst here don't get caught up in the pissing match represented in this thread.

Imo Bridger is alot more fun to ski. Big Sky and Moonlight have better parks, but if your coming to Montana why not go shred the powder. Bridger is more affordable and has amazing terrain. Big Sky does as well but it gets more and more crowded it seems with tourists. Just my two cents. to the op just come and have fun!
