Midwest Open registration has opened up online at http://www.cascademountain.com/calendar_more_info.php?id=227. MWO is on Saturday March 6th at Cascade Mountain. There is a big air comp during the day and then an evening rail jam held in the base area. It costs $25 for one event or $15 for a single event. The main sponsors are Cacade Mountain and Nordica with a lot of partial sponsors. I will get a list of all the sponsors up as soon as possible, but trust me the prize list will be pretty huge... their are boxes of products already rolling in. Registration is capped at 200 competitors. There are 5 divisions... 15 and under skiing, 15 and under snowboarding, 16+ skiing, 16+ snowboarding, and womens mixed. Last year we moved the big air hit to the Northwall and it as those of you who were there know it didn't work out too well. The jumps were about 45 and 55 feet but they were pretty flat and speed could have been better... granted the weather didn't help. We have made a lot of changes in the north park this year and we have a very large drop in and 3 big and steep shelves which really help you carry speed all the way to the headwall on the northwall which is where the jump will be built. We know what we need to do to improve the jumps and I will give you my word that it will be way better than last years setup. The rail jam will be sick as usual with probably 4-5 features set up and a whole bunch of spectators and music. There are always a bunch of vendors with next years gear and free shwag to give out. So even if you don't want to compete please come and check it out. Should be bigger and better than last year.

More info and updates to come.

i wanna go but back to back weekends might be hard to get off. The big nut open is the weekend before this. we will see

since i wont be able to compete this year, would it be possible for me to could get special access privelges for me and my camera?

You must not go to very many comps if you think MWO is the worst comp ever. Granted last years jumps weren't too good... we were fighting the shitty weather. We have a plan this year that should allow us to build a proper big air jump and not have to worry about speed. Rail jam set up is always sick so i hope you aren't talking about that. Rail jam judging was spot on. I don't know anything about the big air judging just because i was in it so i didn't see what was thrown down by everyone. I do agree that the judging needs improvement from last year though. I'd like to hear some ideas to make it better if you have any?

Jerseys this year are going to be pretty sick... just think Vegas Purple and Gold :)

True that. Being the midwest that we are were lucky to have comps with this shit weather. and who cares about judging and who wins or not. just have fun. And yes, i thought last years mwo was pretty good for the conditions.

I have been to more comps than you. Last year the jump sucked ass. I ended up stomping a sw 9 mute on that piece of shit, and top three competitors did all sw 7s. hmm good judging...??? No. As far as the rail jam, good setup, horrible judging. The judging at this event is horrid. And last year the judges were like 2 snowboarders and a 60 year old skier. So... this event has good vibes and its fun yes ( AND SWEET JERSEYS YAY), but if your really trying to be serious about competing, dont put yourself in the hands of that shitty judging. I made that mistake last year. Never again

Yeah your mom thought the judging was pretty bad last year... that's cool. Good thing the rail jam was judged pretty flawlessly you tard. Stay in Minnesota you fuckin' baby... your mom can still come and watch though.

Like I said in my post... we realize the jumps weren't very good... that's why we are changing them this year. Trust me I know a good jump when I see one and those weren't it. Claim much?... just kidding, but seriously. You can't go into any competition expecting flawless judging. If you don't want to be judged, don't compete.... simple enough. I was there watching the entire rail jam... the best skier and snowboarder definitely won... no question about it. Everyone always thinks they should have won and that's cool I understand it, but damn... get over it... just saying.

Anyways, to the rest of you.... GET REGISTERED!!! The sooner the better, because everyone always waits until the week before to register. Oh and any requests for features in the rail jam? I have ideas, but I'm always open to suggestions!

I agree with some of the things chris said. Jump sucked but that is going to change so awesome. Good set up for rails. My complaint is that it turned into a best trick contest which I thought killed the vibe. The vibe is everything for MWO in my opinion. It always comes through as a fun comp and everyone is down for hanging out. Best vibe of the year last year probably except for rail jam IMO. Still fun though, i just wish it was an overall comp. Then people aren't trying one trick 50 times and finally getting it. I wont make it unfortunately cause it im in ireland. Rock on guys!

yeahhh NYE rail jam was best trick last year too ('08), but they changed that for this year which was sick...overall impression is definitely the way to go
i'm gonna be coming out this year, and probably competing in both events, i just need to get registrated

chyeah! I need to register soon. Hopefully the weather will be better this year, I decided to sleep in and skip the big air last year because I looked out my window when I woke up and it was pouring out. And I agree with the format of juding, overall impression > best trick, anyday.

And as far as judges go, I think they did a decent job for the rail jam, but like I said, I wasn't there for the Big Air so I can't really say anything about that. Though, the overall consensus I heard about it was that it was off a bit. I think if there were some "newschool" skier judges along with some dope snowboarder judges everybody would be happy. And like The_Future said, everybody always wants to win and not everybody is going to be 100% happy with the outcome of the judges decisions, reglardless how good the judges are at "judging".

Let's forget about the poopy weather and judging issues of last year and focus on this year, because it will be sick and a great time!

Trust me I know Chris can ski. I never doubted that.... all I was saying was that the judging is rarely perfect in any comp. If you don't want to be judged then don't compete. I agree that the judging was wayy sub-par the last couple years and I'm going to do whatever I can to change that. And there will be plenty of pics of the jumps, so no worries there. And also don't say that cascade sucks if you haven't been there yet this year. Things have changed... good changes. So, yeah I hope you come out to MWO and sorry to Chris, I never doubted your skiing... I know you kill it.

This is why i hated midwest comps so much. You spend all this money and to come to a comp, and the judging is a total joke and the hometown kid who sucks wins.

Chris knows what hes talking about, niggas bad as fuck.

I will be coming this year again, hopfully it will be a little better weather this year!
but i agree the judging was shit, a kid that did switch 9 high mute didnt even place when a switch 7 and dub backflip fall won (if i remember correctly)
and the rail jam wasn't judged right also, kid that won the younger age group did a sketchy 450 on to the down rail when 2nd place got a crown and a 2 on pretz 2 out on the same rail...... i would have thought a steezy pretz would have beat a sketch 450

but like i said it was still a fun time and i'll be back again this year but i do agree with the others that judging was kinda bad.

holy crap...its the MIDWEST OPEN and all you win is a season pass?!!?

bring back the MWSO please. Cash prizes. That comp was legit.

I don't remember the last time you won a season pass at the open... and at least it's not some lame ass vacation like that one year haha. Now it's strictly product prizes... skis, boots, etc. For a 15 or 25 dollar entry fee that's not bad at all. I'm working on the judging thing right now. I am asking around looking for legit judges... people who have actually followed the progression of skiing.. From what everyone is saying, really that was the biggest problem with the event the last couple years. l'll see what I can do.

Future, Im not the only one who thought I got screwed. ^ And waita change your name to say such a dick comment. My suggestion to you is that you find a couple legit riders to judge the comp. both skiers and boarders. That way, they will actually know what tricks are good or bad. You have a lot of work to do, I would suggest maybe getting your shit together so there isn't this much bad feedback next time.

So true. Which is partially why Im not in the Midwest anymore. Futures a douche, and everyone knows it. Have fun in WI. hhaaha

Do you even know me? Am I a douche because I work at cascade and you feel you were wronged by a comp they hosted? That makes a lot of sense doesn't it..... Anyways, I don't feel like the feedback is THAT bad. Okay, bad judging and poor jumps. Two very easy things to fix. And I'll say it for the hundreth time... I KNOW YOU AREN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS YOU SHOULD HAVE PLACE HIGHER... but you need to grow up and realize that a judged event is just that... a JUDGED event... they are subjective and not every judge is going to make the best picks. Seriously dude, it's in the past... I had nothing to do with the judging last year, so call me a douche all you want but I don't give a damn. I am confident that the comp will be sick this year and I hope we get a good turnout.

Oh and if I don't find any legit skiing judges... I will drop out of the big air comp and judge both events. There will be legit judges, don't worry.

wahhh wahhhh.... will somebody call the wahmbulance? take the soggy tampon out of your ass ya faggot. ya, the judging was off, because you didn't win, right? get the fuck over it you whiny bitch. stay in CO if you want perfectly built jumps and pro judges. nobody wants you back at the MWO anyway, because then we'd have to listen to that cow you call your mom yell at the judges because her little precious child didn't win. shut the fuck up.
on a lighter note, mwo should be good this year. sounds like this future kid has things figured out on what to change. i dont know if ill be able to make it, but im gunna try.

Word, I totally understand that. Our events coordinator is gone and now it is strictly up to the park manager and park supervisor (myself) to find judges. So in other words... Rest assured that I will take care of it. Glad to hear you'll be giving us another chance.

Well... you'll have to keep on missing the S rail. RIP.
Anyway, everyone should chill the fuck out! Let's put the past behind us, and start a fresh page for the MWO this year. I have confidence in The_Future to make things happen.
One month away!

Thanks Brandon... and yeah unfortunately the S-Rail is in rail heaven :(. Trust me I know... I hit that thing every single run two years ago when it was out. But, no worries there are some fresh rails and features you should like. No bus or 80 ft S-rail, but some legit features none the less.

We don't have any room for it in the new park locaton, so it just got scrapped. It was pretty ghetto anyways. I do miss it though. We're waiting on a order of plastic to come in so we can start building a bunch of new boxes/ box tops. Hopefullly we'll have a couple new rails and boxes by MWO

seriously guys the reason I still look at this regional forum daily is because everyone is always so stoked to ski. This has turned into a bitching fest and is pretty lame. Constructive criticism is great but we are going in circles now and it's getting lame. As for saying wisconsin is lame, not cool. Im from wisconsin and go to minnesota for school and they both rock. Some of you are not being minnesota nice haha. Let's stop the bashing

this thead is getting out of hand

the funnest part about these big competitions is getting to ski with everyone from all over the midwest!

anyone end up getting the s-rail after I did at the 2008 MWO? or can i claim last person ever to get it haha

I'm pretty sure someone got it at PFC at the end of the season that year... but I can't guarantee that because I don't remember for sure

Good news, I have already located one judge. He used to ski and film with Pep back in the day when I believe he skied at Mammoth. Anyways, he's been around the sport forever and from seeing his photography work I know he has a damn good eye for style. Now, I am still searching for a qualified NSer to be the other judge and then I need a snowboarder judge. But, this is definitely a good start and I am confident the judging is already going to be much better than the previous years. If I don't find an NSer I can trust to judge this, like I said before I will not compete and I will take the judging spot.

Keep registering! Jerseys are going to be so dope this year. Imagine Vegas Purple and Gold. And the logo changed for this year.
