those are stinger water skis, he mounted them up to show the advanteges of the spatula technology, you can turn side ways on the steepest of steepest slopes effortless because they are so big, there is a clip of him in focused sliding this gigantic face the measured 45 degrees entirely sideways

I have said it before, Shane McConkey is a GOD.

You should belive everything you read on the internet, it's all true.

Id like to try them skis out myself.

Water and Metal are the elements of Time Travel. If you would like to travel back in time with me, message me.

So is it possible to just buy some water skis mount them and then ski the pow? do they not need edges??

-ERIC

you need edges to ski so they really only slide sideways but its wicked cool

the magazine is called 'POWDER' cool! - my stupid non-skiing friend

those skis don't have edges as they are waterskis, but his spatulas do. I don't see why you would really need edges to ski powder anyway

I feel bad for people who don't drink, cause when they wake up in the morning, thats the best the're going to feel all day

yeah, the spatulas have reverse camber so they are useless for anything less than a foot or two of powder

we did that at my school ski club, we put binfings on water skis, but there is no powder in CT to try them out on

I wonder if it would help you to do tricks off the wake if you mounted ski binders on your waterskis, and used your ski boots?? hmmm, that's one to try for next summer.

You should belive everything you read on the internet, it's all true.

wicked i've been trying to jump on water skis but its a bitch. yeah we thought about the ski binding thing and i think if you just forward mounted wakeboard bindings it'd work pretty well

the magazine is called 'POWDER' cool! - my stupid non-skiing friend

conk also mounted bindings facing forwards on snowboards and used them like huge pow skis too. check it in powder magazine.

^^ an instructor at Whistler did that too with snowboards, and they also did extreme front/reae mounting and 2 sets of bindings on one pair of skis. They had it in their video section last year. It was pretty damn funny and definately worth a watching if they still have it there.

McConkey is a god, and the whistler video is hilarious for those of you who haven't seen it yet. I think it's still at www.whistlerblackcomb.com in their video section.

Power in Numbers

I got the pleasure of skiing the Spatula last season in pow at Mammoth with Shane and the skis is absolutely amaizing the best 100% pow ski out there but he will even tell you its for pow and pow only the ski has no stability on anything less that powder.

it does have edges but if you are forced to ski them in no pow cond you have to go strait and hold on because the dont turn but in the pow there is nothing thats even close.

He skied on the waterskis to show the concept of the spatula which is its ability to float sideways which make turning that much easier.

The whole idea for the spatula came from watersports.

two bindings mounted on a snowboard type thing is called mono boarding

its been happing in europe for since i've been skiing which is about 15 years

we call the '2 bindings on a snowboard facing forward' a mono board. old people here do it. kinda like old school skiing keep knees and feet together.

yes mono-boarding (aka mono-skiing) has been around for a while, but I didn't think that came up at all. I know I (and other people) mentioned the mounting of ski bingings on a snowboard (using a snowboard as a ski - skiing on 2 snowboards) and also mentioned mounting 2 pairs of bindings on one pair of skis (alowing 2 people to ski on one pair of skis).

Never thought I'de hear of mono-skiing on a newschool board. That is one aspect of skiing I wish the sport could erase, but I guess everything in the history of skiing has played into the current scheme of things in one way or another.

2 people on one ski would be really awkward. but then 2 bindings on one ski is just like an alpine board.

A Straight Line Twisted

When Shane McConkey (who we'll be profiling in October) mounted up some Stinger Graphite water skis, hopped off a cornice in Bella Coola, B.C., and slid sideways down a 45-degree spine for 2,000 vertical feet, he wasn't out of his mind on mushrooms, he was product testing the way only McConkey can. 'The shape of these skis allows you to throw 'em sideways while keeping you on top of the snow, so you don't have to muscle every powder turn,' he says. Oh, now we get it. That makes perfect sense.
