M&A stoke

I just received my FLM ball head and carbon fibre legs in the mail today and all I can say is damn. Those germans know how to make their shit.

Anti-stoke: I'm starting to get concerned that I'm shooting a lot of photos lately, but never have anything I want to post in the "PYBP" thread. Maybe I'm overly critical, maybe I think my recent work isn't relevant to the thread, or maybe I'm just not shooting anything good or that I really like. I'm guessing the latter is the case and i'm not sure what my next step to take my photography up a notch is.

Yeah. I'm in a lull like this as well

I recommend trying something totally different and recharge. Shoot a roll of film or something. focus on more abstract shit. Read some photography books and get some inspiration.

Won a little photo contest in my school photo club today. Don't care so much about winning, but the whole room went into a discussion of how good my photo was and why, which I was super flattered by. It's fun to get a little praise from people who know (supposedly) what they're talking about.

A friend of mine got a 6D and told me I could borrow it whenever for any film projects I'm working on. Better than my 60D so I'm psyched.

I have been really out of touch with newschoolers and my filming/photography for the past 2 years. So i'm really excited to be back. i also just bought a Minolta SRT 201 and am super excited to start my endeavor of film.

I can imagine you photogs are hyped on that res.

Too bad they switched to garbage GPUs and still package them with i5s. A legit version of that computer (minus the GPU) is $3500.

I still think if I got a personal desktop, I'd built a hackintosh and buy a 4k monitor for still 1/2 the price.

GPU is garbage in your mind because it's AMD and doesn't have CUDA support. the 295x is actually ill AF.

Isn't the entry QC an i7? Or is it an i5? If it's i5 that's weak AF. Might just have to upgrade my GPU and get a 4K monitor for my desktop

I heard the GPU was actually not that great, granted I don't know a ton about AMD but my co-worker who is a mega nerd said it was garbage for the system.

But yes, the low end model (2500) has an i5.

I'm pretty sure Apple weighed the pros and cons of using the 970/980M. Ultimately the better deal was to partner with AMD. We will know the reasons for this partnership in the future, but for now I wouldn't jump to conclusions and assume that the consumer was better off with an Nvidia part, also for editing, Adobe has long supported the OpenCL open standard for acceleration of their entire Suite and modern AMD GPUs are usually very fast at OpenCL.

Also the i5 in the Retina is fast enough.

The i5 should technically get smoked in the multicore performance, that screenshot is of single core performance where it holds its own.

LOL single core.

Anyways tho I know they'll be just fine, but it's just classic apple not using the top end parts for their "top end machines". Hell if an imac had a 3.4 ghz 8 core i7 with a 980m (so dumb they have to use mobile gpu just make the computer bigger) and then MAYBE it'd be worth 2500.

Whoops. And the difference is not that huge.

It's easily worth 2500 for the display alone, Dell whom Apple has a hate/love relationship with do share their display's on multiple occasions, such as with the thunderbolt display and the Dell U27something.

In early september Dell announced the UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K, which will probably house the same panel.

Introduction price: 2500 dollar.

The iMac essentially comes with a free computer inside. For what it is it's a bargain, the reason for lower-speccing is just a sale trick to drive down the price as to not make the price to steep.

People will pay 2500 for an iMac with good screen, 3000 that's too much. Mac Pro area.

They do things for a reason, they are not some tiny silly company.

I get what you're saying here but assuming now that the imac has 5k, it'll be like how imacs had the 1440p screen way before anyone else but the cost of a 4k monitor is going to go down tremendously in the next year.

So I wouldn't necessarily say you're getting a free computer.

For now you do, 4K is already entering consumer prices but those are shitty TN panels. So far the only other 5K panel still has too come out and will need some double display port connection crap that all happens magically internal in the 5kMac,

Anyhow this thing will really be the catalyst to drive down prices on larger/desktop high pixel density monitors, something the IBM T221 never could.

Then again I can't get fused up about the specs, I'm not buying it, I learned my lesson to avoid 1st gen Apple innovations when I get the go MacBook Air in 2008, paid 2K euro for something that was, criminally slow.

At least it was revolutionary thin.

The next round of iMacs is going to be dope AF

yeah I might keep my desktop held together for one more gen and then hop on that train. 5k packed into 27" sounds cripsy AF

This is pretty cool for film shooters, a 4x5 field camera has been funded on kickstarter in just a couple days. I'm really interested to see how these cameras turn out and might have to get one if they're well received.

That's awesome. I've only really messed around a few times on 4x5, but never had enough time to really get the hang of it or experiment or anything. I'm curious to see the price... You can pick up a lens for like 100 bucks these days (of course not necessarily anything special, but certainly some of the the basic Kodak or Japanese stuff) and do some pretty fun photography for surprisingly cheap.

long exposures on 4x5 are fucking UNREAL (think f64 or f128 on 50 speed film haha) I'd love to have a chance to try them out.

Probably going to pick up a camera once I graduate (since my only camera is my iPhone).

Can't decide between 4x5 or Olympus XA...

Just get a Leica and am Alpa. No need to buy anything else again.

Two very different cameras to be deciding between haha. I'd love to have the 28mm XA though, I'll probably pick one up come spring.

It's moreso a decision of whether or not I want to deal with the shit-ganache that is scanning 35mm film.

inb4 get a Pakon, because Windows is a shitty OS.

Yeah I feel that. My local lab does a shitty job of scanning but I don't want to bother scanning myself if I'd have to get them to process it anyways.

So now I can autofocus with all my old lenses which I'm stoked about and holy low light!

BUT Lightroom doesn't support the raw files yet

How's the video quality? 1080p60 in full frame sounds sexual.

From my super limited testing, it seems good, compared to the 5100 I've been mainly using all year it's a heap sharper and there seems to be more DR in the flat profile than before. I haven't used the 60p yet, going skiing tomorrow so we should get some filming done then!

It's definitely sharper than a 5300 too, and a whole lot better ISO performance which is useful when we ski indoors and want to be 20mm f8.

:) :) :)

I wonder how similar it is to my D600.. can't be that different and isn't from the sound of things. I really really want that 1080p60 though. Oh well. Least mine's metal ;)

I've been doing followcams at the indoor skatepark and using 20 f8 and even 20 f11. I have no qualms about bumping the ISO to 6400 with this thing. It slays low light.
