M&A Movie 2011/2012 Official Thread

I know this has been discussed before, but I think that this season we should have M&A here on NS team up and make a really sick movie. I was thinking of making my own movie next year, but i think instead we could makes something much better with each person making the best 3 minute segment they can. More ideas will come, and I will update this periodically. It doesn't matter much how good of skiers you are shooting (or are if you are being shot) just make sure to put out your most banger shots and edits. I know that for me, for instance, I plan on shooting one really sick segment with a bunch of friends, and ill have some shots in there, but the shots of me will be backcountry, because I am much better at that than park. don't feel obligated to have jumps, rails, backcountry all in your edit, choose what you're best at and share. I think that for the best movie possible you should have at least 3-4 skiers per segment. Anyways, please add to this, and message me if you are interested. I will do the intro, one segment, the outro, and put it up on vimeo. I think that we can do something really cool here, and all it requires is like eight or so really dedicated people. I will put out the best work i can, and anybody shooting for this should do the same too.

Really stoked for this!

I mean, sounds super sick and all but think.

It would be all over the place, like most of us on M&A have a completly different style of filming. We would need to hold some sort of video competiton/Demo Reel Thing where a bunch of us make short reels and some of us get choosed to make a part in the movie. I also think it should just be one or two people per part, no more than 2.

thats just my 2 cents

ok yea for sure. I posted this idea as soon as i thought of it, and now im realizing that there may be quite a few kinks.

other opinions? be sure to post in this thread if you'd be interested so i know who might be in

Just got my camera, so is there a chance we could throw in a segment of like skating, tramping, cliff jumping ext..

yea man there'd for sure be a chance we could throw that stuff in. and as far as the media formats, now with DSLR's, theres a level of video quality that we can almost all access now that makes it a lot easier to access that. we should make sure everything is shot in all HD with a good HD camera (DSLR or $2000+ consumer/prosumer camcorder)

sounds like a pretty good idea! We should use the video contest and summer time to kind of judge where people are at and assign different people different roles for the film

yea for sure. Ill be making some edits during the summer that I think are a good evaluation of my abilities and i think others should too.

This. Everybody that would be interested in making the film would have to put out an edit that they feel represents them as a filmer, and the top 10 or so could be chosen to participate.

This should be really interesting. Culminating all of the different filming/editing styles of those involved could produce some really interesting results. I think, as previously stated, a contest should be held, where a predetermined number of filmmakers are chosen to make segments and one is chosen as the 'Master Editor', they will be the person to fuse everything together in both an interesting and effective manner. The contest topic should be something along the lines of action, that way we get a real idea about where people are filming action sports, aka, skiing. Finally, we should strive to have the most variation in styles possible. It would get boring if we had 3 segments from people with extremely similar editing styles, if we try to have the most possible variation the film will end up being the most interesting. The more variation the better.

I think the contest should be based on a few criterias, obviously filming and editing skills, location of the filmer (We dont want every one shooting in vermont, or in CO, or in BC or whatever) and style of filming that will be filmed (Park [jumps or rails], BC, etc.)

Oh yeah, location is key, need a good mix of icy east coast park and fluffy BC pow. This is going to be really cool.

NS did this a few years back with First! the NS Movie, and it came out pretty sick. I think people just sent in a bunch of random unedited shots though and they picked the ones they liked and did all the editing. It would be cool if they did something like that again

Yea I remember that. Im thinking this could be a little different tho in that its more focused on the filming and editing aspect than the skiing

Yeah I see what you mean. I think it would make sense to have a contest sorted by geographic area. Have contests for riders and filmers for maybe EC US, EC Canada, Midwest, PNW, Cali, CO, etc.

i think that having one person editing it will make it much easier. Does anyone know of like a free online file storage that would give enough space? We could come up with a system for naming your files, an then make folders for east/west etc. and then have everyone upload their files in the same format (I know many of us use pro res, but not everyone has a mac, and it would take longer to upload). If we shared an account, any editor who wanted to could have full access to make an edit. We could even have everyone upload their shots, and then, using only the shots online, make like a 2 min max video. Pick the best one, and they can edit the "official" NS movie. Just kind of my thought process here. anyone like it or have other ideas?

This may be the easiest way, but I think it would be cool to have different people edit different segments. Maybe break it down into a few longer segments though. Having lots of 3-4 min segments all edited by different people would probably come out very incoherent and wouldn't flow well at all. On the other hand I like the idea of showcasing several people's editing styles.

bump, ill be shooting a lot next season with a dope group, ill def be able to get a sick segment for the movie

quick update: it looks like these are the members that are interested in contributing. if you'd be interested please post in this thread in the next couple weeks. if i missed any of your names, let me know. once we have everyone who is interested in contributing, I think we should make a cult and get everyone's skill level and everything set and start figuring out roles. any other ideas are gladly welcome!

I'll do it. Riding might not be amazing, but I think we'll be able to hold our ground and get a decent segment in. I also need more motivation to film this year, I get too caught up in skiing without a firm incentive to film.

I may be interested. Me and Bulbasaur film a lot in the South lake tahoe area. I'm not on the same caliber as all of you guys but I'm learning and I've been making little edits for a while. May try to focus filming pow though because we aren't good enough to make a quality park seg.

maybe i'm confused about how this works. is it designed so each filmer basically makes an edit of their crew then submits that?

also, is that icon new or have i just never noticed it? really throwing me off

I am definitely interested in contributing. I am currently saving up for a GH2 setup and if all goes as planned I will have it within the next 3 weeks. I am also recovering from ACL surgery so I had planned on really shifting my focus to filming this season. This project would be great motivation to really log some good shots come ski season.

sounds sick. i definately keep this going but not going to participate... just staring with hddslr's.. should be sick

Yea I'm totally down, what I think would make it really unique would be the amount of locations we could all cover. For getting the video over we would just put all the raw clips into one video, render it and upload it to mediafire, then the person editing could download each sections and edit the video locations based.

this would be sick, but i also am interested in the concept of having all of us edit separately and mix styles. this can all be figured out later though

THAT'D BE SICK.

I'D LOVE TO CONTRIBUTE BUT ALL I HAVE IS A GOPRO AND DONT HANG OUT WITH THE MOST TALENTED OF SKIERS. GOOD LUCK THO!

yah I agree I mean I love the thought of everyone editing there own segment it is just wouldn't flow as smoothly and would be more of a collection of edits
