took this in august at phish, not the best, i have the same angle just much better but im too lazy to go through the work of posting it...

holy epic.

for this shot, do you just do a normal long exposure, pointed up towards the sky with lightning, hoping that lightning is in the shot?

i've wondered that, it'd be my guess, nobody has the reflexes to snap the shot right when lightning hits and it also explains the blown out lights in the foreground

For this shot I used a 13 second exposure at F11. From my experience, shooting lighning takes the basic knowledge of long exposures with a shit load of luck. Like I said before, it took two hours to get one good shot. To answer your question, yes, I just prayed that lightning would come down in the frame. To make it easier I noticed the majority of the forked lightning was only coming down in two spots on the horizon. Every once in a while I would switch it up and test my luck with the new spot. Also, I played around with my exposure/ f stop alot becasue it was giving me drastic changes. Too long of an exposure and the street lights would become blown-out. On the other hand, not enough time left me with a very small chance at capturing lighning. Hope that helps, and good luck if you ever try to shoot lightning

Very nice! I really want to take some lightning shots myself but the lightning where I live is pathetic and maby occurs 10 times in a summer, it's so weak.

good god... i wish i was in a lightning storm right now. i think i had like 1 or 2 this summer... and i dont even think there was lightning where i was just thunder lol. but for two hours of chillin and takin pictures id say that shot is worth every second. good job man some people might go an entire lifetime tryin so hard to get a shot like that and not get one like that. :D

All unedited.. too much noise for my liking. Still just getting started though.
