unarmed robbery does not get you the death penalty, i get what you're saying but the sign guy has a point

With all do respect, you are just wrong. Robbery is a violent crime per the FBI:

In the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses which involve force or threat of force.

A person has the right to defend themselves against violent crimes. A police officer is still considered a person. If you are robbing my house, I have the right to shoot you.

It pisses me off when people refer this as someone receiving the "Death Penalty". One who is convicted of a capital crime by a jury of his peers can be sentenced to death. These people didn't receive the death penalty. People who are shot by cops are using deadly force or are perceived as eminently threatening to use deadly force.

If I attacked a cop or threatened them with a weapon, I would assume that there was a very high probability that he or she would shoot me. When you are aggressive with a police officer you are instantly upping the ante and, if you are able to walk away from the encounter on your own, you should consider yourself very lucky. This is a cause and effect that is color blind.

You may be profiled, you may be hassled, and white people can be profiled too. I got pulled over driving my wife's old beater of a car, and I know the guy was checking to see if I had weed in the car. You will not get shot unless you do something really stupid.

The argument that this sign represents is just idiotic. If you use violence against someone else, they can and will use violence to defend themselves. It's just that simple. I know this is pretty callous, but if a mother isn't capable of teaching her kids not to rob people and her kid gets shot, that's on her.

youre oversimplifying an incredibly complex issue. did you know that if an First Nations person chooses to leave their reserve, they have to abandon the aboriginal rights theyre given? so if they choose to leave their miserable slum of a community, they are basically thrust into the world with aboslutely nothing. why do they have nothing? they aren't allowed to own property on a reserve. technically the reserve is owned by the local band, not individual people. when you don't own your property, theres no incentive to put any money into it. so people sit around and huff gas instead.

thats why aboriginal people are trapped. they cant afford or get an education because of how isolated they are from society by living on reserves. if they leave the reserve they are fucked too. it takes a lot more than willpower for an aboriginal family to get off the reserve and integrate into society, and usually involves a few generations of marriage with non-aboriginal, otherwise established families.

this fucked up stuff about leaving the reserve and who techincally owns the land in the reserve was established in Treaty 9, signed about 110 years ago by illiterate chiefs who were given huge gifts of tobacco and food by the British ambassadors who came to them. pretty shifty move, and has had incredibly long reaching consequences.

Actually yes I did know that they lose their tax benefits and such if they leave. Your whole argument is ridiculous as well. You are arguing against getting rid of their benefits, by showing how the benefits have made them worse off, I just don't see the flow of reasoning there.

What do you mean they can't afford education, if they choose to go UBC for example they won't pay a cent in tuition for their entire undergrad. You may try and respond how their is more to pay for during school then just tuition which is true, however they have plenty of scholarships to help cover these costs and even without them, a part time job can easily cover all those expenses such as books and rent, even in a city with as expense rent as Vancouver.

As far as the argument stating that not owning a house is stopping them from moving out because they won't have the funds from selling the house it is also shit. Guess what, nobody(well except the super rich), owns a house before they move out, but they all seem to manage. When I move out from my parents house I will forced with the same shit of paying rent while saveing up for down payment, just like everyone else. If these people can manage to save up for a down payment, while paying rent, I'm sure the natives could do the same especially seeing as they won't even have to pay rent while saving up.

In the end it is a sheer lack of motivation from the natives to get there shit together, what is worse is that a lot of natives will look down on you for being motived and wanting to succeed(coming from a native who used to live on a reserve near my house) which obviously kills any motivation in young kids growing up on the reserve.

Do you know any aboriginal people? If you did, you know would know what a load of bs this is.

The federal gov't provides some funding for status indians to receive from their band. There is often a crap load of politics involved in getting it (do you have relatives on the council? Are you related to the chief? Etc). Even then, if they decide you are eligible, they might pay for everything, or they might give you a couple hundred bucks a month. Even then, they can decide to pull funding whenever they want. Most of the aboriginal people I went to university applied for funding from their band and either received nothing or next to nothing and had to pay for it just like everyone else.

So no. No free tuition.

Standing in the street? Building don't just set themselves on fire nor do cars just randomly flip on their roofs. The riots in Ferguson as well as the standing in the middle of major road stunts that have been going on have been nothing but opportunistic mayhem. Like I said, I am not against their message or cause but destroying your cities infrastructure or causing a father to be late to his sons birthday party because you are laying in the middle of the road is hardly an effective way to promote change. An educated person such as those who were peaceful and did not participate in the "Fuck everyone's day up movement" would have a far more favorable view from the rest of us and therefor have more of an ability to get something productive done.

Bull. Shit. 50 years ago, sure, but not today.

Natives in Canada have every opportunity that any other person has with the added benefits of not paying certain taxes and a few other perks.

Them living in complete poverty is entirely and 100% their bloody faults. Take a town like Attiwapiskat, about the shittiest place outside Haiti in the Americas. The federal government pumps millions and millions of dollars into these small towns (something like 50 million over a decade for a town with only a few hundred people) and they mismanage the money so so so so poorly that they end up being worse off then they were a decade previously. Then the government says "ok well you fucked up let's send in auditors to see where the money went" and they refuse to let anyone look at their books for where they spent taxpayer money.

Fuck them. Seriously. And then they make is seem like it's societies fault. If you don't bloody like it there move away, get a job, and live like any other Canadian. No one is stopping you.

I think the problem is that they're put on a pedestal and made to seem inferior to everyone else by way of giving them extra help no one else gets. Take away all Aboriginal funding, take away their tax breaks, their free housing, don't give them anything else. Let them integrate into society like the other 30 million of us who aren't miserable and don't prop them up, cause it's doing more harm than good.

No. Aboriginal people are still treated like crap in Canada.

Yes. There are huge problems with corruption in some bands, but far from all of them. For every situation like Attiwapiskat, there are chief's and council's that don't take a salary and pump that money back into their community. No one talks about them though because crappy situations always make more noise. Don't use "they" and "them" to talk about an entire group of people.

Multi-generational, systemic poverty is far more difficult to get out of than 'moving away and getting a job'. Throw in multi-generational physical, emotional, and sexual abuse (I've never met an aboriginal person where these haven't been an issue somewhere in the family. Usually all of them), ptsd (being forced out of your home into a residential school), alcohol and substance abuse, disability (FASD, etc) and all kinds of other stuff and you have an almost impossible situation to get out of.

I'm not saying the current set up in Canada is anywhere close to being okay, but it's a WAY more difficult that just trying a little harder. There are many people who take advantage of the system, but for every one of those people, there are a whole bunch working at making their situation better.

idk about the last 3 years for sure (they probs stopped counting, knowing the government) but in 2011 at least, white on white killings were more prevalent than white on black, black on black, or black on white killings.

now, in 2013, 43.5% of all killings in america were committed by whites while 52.5% were committed by blacks. 84% of whites killed were killed by other whites, and 93% of black were killed by other blacks. so while i admit that the stats from 2011 might not still hold, it is still ridiculous to suggest that black on black crime is the reason white cop on unarmed black citizen murder is so high, given that white cop on unarmed white citizen killings aren't, despite both races sharing insanely high numbers of murder all around (in america). i wish i could give you more numbers but it actually isn't my job to keep track of these things and apparently that job isn't important anymore.

I am neutral on it because I have not been presented the evidence in it's entirety nor have I heard a truly unbiased report on the topic. I don't agree with anyone protesting the Michael Brown at all, a jury who was presented with the evidence decided to not indict Wilson . End of story.

a "jury" (in most cases, made up of people who have no vested interest in the case), The Grand Jury, has almost never indicted a police officer, which in my personal opinion is probably why police officer killings are brought before The Grand Jury, so that the cop can go free. if they were brought before a real court i imagine the cases would go a little differently, at least in that they would actually cross-examine the witnesses.

Black folk make up 13% of the population yet are responsible for 52% of the murders in america. Whites make up 77% of the population are are responsible for 43%. So blacks are about 7 times more likely to kill someone. When a physical trait apparntly makes a person statistically 7 more times likely to murder someone, yes cops are going to be 7 times more on edge.

What good would cross-examining the witnesses do? Most of them were discredited to begin with. If there is no evidence to argue a case then what is the point of even going to court? All that would happen is both sides lawyers would argue about irelevent facts and come up with an illogical conclusion.

Plus I would have to listen to the media go on about this personally insignificant event for months in the name of profit (I don't like big news corporations).

Maybe Wilson was in the wrong, I honestly don't know because I have absolutely no evidence or rational reasoning to prove that. Neither do you or anyone else aside from Darren Wilson.

how many unarmed black men are killed by white cops in america? how many unarmed black CHILDREN are killed by white cops in america?

unfortunately, your government actually chooses not to keep track of these numbers, so i can't tell you. all i can say is that it happens almost every single day.

so this is what an epidemic looks like. this what black americans are afraid of. this is the nightmare every black american is now living in. how it isn't a nightmare for the rest of you, too, is beyond me. i live in canada and this shit keeps me up all night. i can only imagine how my jamaican cousins that moved to america to study feel, all i know is that they think it's time to leave, and i agree. do you?

the "go back to where you came from" mentality strikes an ironic chord with me (the irony of white americans all being immigrants chord was struck a while back), in that if all of the persecuted and marginalized groups in america did actually go elsewhere, what would america be? i imagine a nation in which crusty old racists clean their own toilets, for a change.

K-Rob, you are a brave soul putting this up on this website. I applaud you for opening the subject, sticking with it and making EXTREMELY valid points. Some of the shit people say on here actually makes my skin crawl. I wanted to let you know that I appreciate you bringing this up and creating this conversation. I will add a few thoughts...

I know, for a fact, that because of the way I look that I am safer in this country than a lot of people that I care deeply about. I know that I have a better chance of getting out of a ticket, of not being charged with a crime and I know that I would be sentenced with a MUCH lighter hand if I was convicted than many great men I know, solely based on my appearance. Not to mention, the fear of being KILLED by a police officer has never even remotely entered my reality. THIS is where the anger comes from. It is warranted and it is terrifying. As a white person, it is your responsibility to look at and understand your privilege, it is deep and undeniable. This is the first step in understanding and healing the division of race in this country. Lay your ego and guilt down and listen to understand, not to win.

I would also like to share a quote that Chris Rock said..

"So, to say Obama is progress is saying that he’s the first black person that is qualified to be president. That’s not black progress. That’s white progress. There’s been black people qualified to be president for hundreds of years. If you saw Tina Turner and Ike having a lovely breakfast over there, would you say their relationship’s improved? Some people would. But a smart person would go, “Oh, he stopped punching her in the face.” It’s not up to her. Ike and Tina Turner’s relationship has nothing to do with Tina Turner. Nothing. It just doesn’t. The question is, you know, my kids are smart, educated, beautiful, polite children. There have been smart, educated, beautiful, polite black children for hundreds of years. The advantage that my children have is that my children are encountering the nicest white people that America has ever produced. Let’s hope America keeps producing nicer white people."

I honestly think a lot of white people turn the indisputable facts of racism in this country around because it makes them (us) feel guilt and ashamed. One key part is missing when people turn racism in America discussions to 'black on black' crime discussions. They are glossing over one main point, probably the only point that matters, black people are not killing black people BECAUSE they are black. It is also very odd to me that white people presume to know exactly what black people should do to improve their situation in the States...

Either way, thanks again K-Rob. You're the shit.

yeah maybe in fucking fantasy land. for 104 days, the police lied and said the distance from Darren's SUV to where Mike was killed was 35 feet. after 104 days, the first video from Canfield Drive showing the exact measurement from where Darren's SUV was parked and where Mike was killed was actually 148 feet. this was proven by multiple analysts and pretty much everyone.
http://www.vox.com/2014/8/21/6053811/white-on-white-murder

six different witnesses stated that Mike was shot at at least 6 times while fleeing before turning, putting his hands up and surrendering. (reminder that Witness 10 is considered by St. Louis police to be the only credible witness, despite changing their story at least once between retellings, and that their first tale was never recorded, and that their story matches with everything Darren Wilson said). Wilson then (according to six different witnesses) fired four quick shots while looking at Brown face to face, killing him.

and that's just the case of the guy who is supposed to have stolen a box of cigars so that you can justify his being shot to death while unarmed (i already posted 4 links WITH VIDEO that show the timestamps on the video the police put out do not match, that the store owner doesn't believe the video the cops released was of mike brown, that the store owner says nothing was stolen and nobody called the police, and video footage of mike brown paying for his cigars, clerk clasping cash in hand, and mike walking out calmly).

let's not forget the video of Eric in which he literally had his hands up and said "I'm minding my business officer, I'm minding my business. Please just leave me alone. I told you the last time, please just leave me alone. Please don't touch me, do not touch me. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I can't breathe."

it seems to me that one 6ft 4 inch, 210lb five year old shot someone because he thought he was a demon (his words, not mine).

it seems to me that one 250lb unarmed man was taken down and choked to death by 5 muscular and trained police officers.

it seems to me that one 12 year old boy was gunned down within 2 seconds for carrying a toy gun in a state where you can carry real guns and not be arrested.

it seems to me that one 7 year-old girl was shot in the head while she was sleeping.

and today, "A father of four was killed Tuesday night while returning home with food for his children.

The incident left an unidentified white officer unharmed and unarmed Rumain Brisbon, 34, dead with two bullet wounds in his torso at a north Phoenix apartment complex.

According to Phoenix police, the officer was responding to a suspected drug deal when he came in contact with Rumain. The driver, later identified as Rumain, exited his car and seemed to remove something from the rear of the SUV.

Brandon Dickerson, who was in the car with Brisbon shortly before the shooting and witnessed some of the incident, said he never saw the officer try to talk with Brisbon.

Still, the officer drew his gun and pointed it at Brisbon, causing him to flee from fear. The officer chased him on foot and ‘a struggle ensued' when he caught up.

“During the struggle, Brisbon put his left hand in his pocket and the officer grabbed onto the suspect’s hand, while repeatedly telling the suspect to keep his hand in his pocket," he said. "The officer believed he felt the handle of a gun while holding the suspect’s hand in his pocket.”

A woman inside an apartment opened a door at that moment, and the officer and Brisbon tumbled inside, Crump said. Two children, ages 9 and 2, were in their bedroom. The officer then shot Rumain twice in the torso.

The item in Brisbon’s pocket turned out to be prescribed pills.

The media smear campaign has already begun. Brisbon was previously convicted for a burglary that occurred in 1998 and spent 5 years on probation. Although this has nothing to do with the shooting, the media is working hard to slander Rumain’s name."

but those are just the facts, i'm not looking at the WHOLE story. obviously all of these people could have posed some kind of unknown deadly threat to any one of the officers. perhaps eric was a black belt who had to get his fists registered as deadly weapons. maybe tamir actually was 20 years old and playing in the park with a real gun. maybe mike was the kind of movie legend who could take four bullets and still manage to football tackle and murder an armed police officer. i missed that part of the story though.

well dude, i guarantee no fucking cop, or really anyone aside from the 120 pound 15 year old you stared at earlier, is perceiving you as a threat, so 7 times nothing is nothing.

An educated person such as those who were peaceful and did not participate in the "Fuck everyone's day up movement" would have a far more favorable view from the rest of us and therefor have more of an ability to get something productive done.

it really sucks that you're making me do this.

The reason Darren Wilson was deemed innocent was because all the witnesses had testimonies which didn't add up with other witnesses. This combined with the fact that some witnesses did withdraw or change their statements means that there was reasonable doubt and that Darren Wilson had to be let free.Cops don't join the force thinking they can get away with murdering minorities, and considering the prevalence of crime within the black community accidents can and will happen.

As well Eric Garner case is not a problem of race, it's a problem of a police officer using an unauthorised choke hold on someone, which unfortunately led to their accidental death. I believe the police officer is guilty of a crime, not murder, but of something lesser as his intent was not to kill.

unfortunately, accidentally killing someone is still considered killing someone. that's why we have things like "manslaughter" and "degrees" of murder. intent and motive are subjective, the actual act of choking someone to death while they repeatedly tell you they cannot breathe is not, especially when captured on video, witnessed in broad daylight in the middle of the street. recently i was in a situation where i accidentally crashed my vehicle into a parked vehicle. i can assure you that it was not my intent to crash my car or damage anyone else's, but the law saw fit to punish me with a $400 ticket and 6 demerit points, which is more than any white cop has gotten for killing an unarmed black person in at least the past few months.

I never said it wasn't considered killing someone, I just said that it wasn't murder, which is what many protesters are calling it. I think something along the lines of "reckless endangerment causing death" would be a more reasonable charge.

Asthma and his obesity killed him. The cops chokehold triggered the asthma attack, and being on top of him along with his own morbidly obese body helped to crush his lungs.

Why is it that all the not from the hood black kids I know get profiled constantly, but never get beaten, shot, etc? That's because they don't fight back against cops.

Why do people think that resisting arrest is okay? Why do they think cops need to be gentle when restraining a resisting individual.

And FYI, if you can talk, yell, or moan. You can still breathe.

dear op,

Ebola, like any other serious disease is HUGE issue, because if not properly dealt with the loss of life could be HUGE. Much larger than any amount of cops killing black people.

Except it's really not in the U.S. People are way overreacting.

Go watch the video again bro. Dude was hardly resisting at all. He had done nothing wrong (aka broken up a fight) and the cops needed to book somebody, so he was the one. Did you listen to him asking them to leave him alone? Honestly I would've acted in the exact same way, if I didn't do anything illegal get your fucking hands off me. Also you don't address the fact that putting someone in a chokehold is illegal. Cops have rules they have to follow, and this cop didn't bother to follow protocol. Resisting arrest isn't a good course of action if you're actually guilty, but if I'm being harassed by cops for BREAKING UP A FIGHT hell yeah I'm going to defend myself.

I know this is pretty callous, but if a mother isn't capable of teaching her kids not to rob people and her kid gets shot, that's on her.

true, I'm just against police in general, they have to much power but i guess they keep the community safe...

You are either trolling, ignorant, ignorantly trolling, brainwashed, or just plain easy to dupe. You ever lived in the hood, or been around what goes on there? you ever get to know the folks that live there? They don't operate by societies rules. But you think they should be treated the same as upstanding members of society? Sorry buddy.

Go to the hood. get jumped a few times. Have a sweet looking grandma beat the shit out of her grandkids on the sidewalk infront of a store, have a crew of 12 year olds fuck up your car for no reason, get jumped a few more times. then we will see if you keep assuming the best possible intentions from those people, no matter how unlikely anything close to good intentions are.

sheltered fucking child. There is a difference between saying there is a problem, and blaming people out of pure fucking ignorance. You are blaming cops and "white america" because you see the problem that the media portrays. youvve never actually seen the day-to-day reality.

Perfect.

K-rob is a troll. and a very good one at that. No one is this delusional

Then you are a moronic simpleton with too much teenage angst. No seriously, that's absolutely delusional logic.

Instead of very calmly, politely, and agreeably handling the situation, you would choose to escalate. Try using your brain instead of your freshly dropped nuts to make decisions and your life won't be so shitty.

Seriously, I've been trying to keep out of this thread for a while but there are some seriously retarded things being said in here.

Aaaaand that's where you're wrong. if you're in that situation, you never try and plead your case with the cops. resisting is only going to get you more trouble. plead your case with a judge.

Go watch the video again bro. Dude was hardly resisting at all. He had done nothing wrong (aka broken up a fight) and the cops needed to book somebody, so he was the one. Did you listen to him asking them to leave him alone? Honestly I would've acted in the exact same way, if I didn't do anything illegal get your fucking hands off me. you dont even know the reason he was being arrested lol

It's unfortunate that cops ever have to kill anyone... Of any race. However when you have so many interactions due to such an infestation of crime within a race I guess the number will appear inflated. There's no doubt that blacks are in some cases immediately discriminated on my the police (and regular people) but they're also statistically committing more major crimes. It's an interesting paradox. The bigger question should be "how do we stop having to have interactions with the police and better ourselves as a community/race?" rather than "why do the police hate us" but that's just me and I'm white.

I feel like we agree on almost nothing, but this was so well said I couldn't help but sympathize/quote again.

Racism is a fire, and finger-point/blaming this group or that group of people is literally like pouring gas into that fire.

It's true, this country was founded/built on slavery. Its a terrible part of our history that I feel the majority of Americans at least regret a little. But its been 150 years since the Civil War and 60+ years since the civil rights movement. We as a nation need to move past this whole "race" thing we seem to be stuck on. Racism seems to be perpetuated MOST by the ignorant and uneducated so maybe we need to address it from that angle? Idk but its still such an overwhelming problem in a country that did away with it not only once but twice with limited result. The fact that people think the color of someones skin represents there status as a human being is fucking atrocious. We as a people are better than that.

And how many of those 52% of murders were black on back?, because I believe around 70% of black crime is black on black. What was the demographic for the area where those murders took place? Im guessing mostly black neighborhoods. Not trying to take a side, just saying I feel this piece of information is missing some parts to it.

There is not a chance in hell this stupid feminist would be holding up the same sign if we were talking about rape. If I held up sign that said "Female silence = Female consent," I can guarantee you she would be fucking outraged. Hypocritical cunt.
