Kind of a callout to some pros

Why don't some of you wear your helmets? IMO we've already lost a couple of great skiers in our sport this year and I would hate to see anymore of them go by death or landing themselves in a wheelchair.
For example Tom wallisch doesn't wear his quite a bit of the time, yes he is very good and the chances of him messing up are slim but I don't think he'd be able to throwdown as hard in a wheelchair or possibly dead. I'm not going to ask the pros to wear there helmets I just think it would be nice to see them wearing them more often than not.
Picture all the pros that don't wear helmets dead or in a wheelchair. Our sport would suck.
sorry kind of a rant

and just one more thing remember you guys are role models. if a kid sees their favorite skier wearing a helmet they'll be more likely to go out and buy it, and knowing some ski kids they'll probably buy the exact same one.
if all pros wore their helmets then more of the average joe skiers would too and it would make our sport a lot safer and i think it might help progress it because I know when i have my helmet on i ski a lot harder than w/o

im aware of that. im not telling them to go and do it. they could give a rats ass what i say. all im saying is that I would hate to see one of the greats in our sport go out just because he wasn't wearing a helmet thats all.
just something to think on

exactly my friend. and IMO i don't think helmets kill your steeze at all. and also considering most if not all the pros can get their hands on a sick helmet for free

I think its funny that Tom doesn't wear one considering his main sponsor, Sweet, is best know for its helmets

I love helmets. I have had a few concussions over the years and they definately prevented them from being a lot worse than they could have been.

Henrik wears his helmet all the time and so it goes to show you can't be to "thug" to not wear a helmet

neck and brain injuries are less likely to be as damaging if you are wearing a helmet.

So is it safer to ski really hard and try crazy stuff with a helmet, or ski without a helmet but don't do things that are as risky? If your pushing your self so much more with a helmet chance of injury is probably a lot higher.

he's getting better about wearing it but in a lot of shots in So Far So Hood trailer he isn't wearing one. Same with WCS videos. Same with "Trip!" produced by Clownschools. Traveling Cirucs 9 and 4.
Last summer hood videos didnt seem him with one once

+1, to each their own, its their head and life. If they dont want to wear one, so be it. I know I dont always wear my helmet.

exactly. ahaha, my friend doesn't wear a helmet and slipped out on a down rail and got a concussion and when queried about his lack of helmets his response was: "tom wallisch doesn't wear a helmet..."

I agree with you, I wear a helmet and carry a probe beacon and shovel when in the backcountry, sometimes the beacon even in the resort.

He was just saying that he pushes himself harder when he wears a helmet, so its not necessarily safer. There has been research done if helmets are actually safer because a lot of people will think they are invincible and ski faster or do crazier stuff etc. Whatever doesn't matter that much, I agree you should wear a helmet. Do I think pro's should wear helmets? Yes.

a lotta people wear helmets... dunno where youre thinking these guys dont wear them at all. hell a few even wear the poc back protectors.

so many people wear helmets now, i bet out of all skiers i know 2/3 probably more wear helmets. and good to see. snowboarders haven't exactly caught on yet though i guess. but yes z rob i think more pros need to.

I am not going to start preaching as to weather people (pros or not) should wear helmets or not. God knows I've had enough people try to preach their opinions to me, and there is nothing more annoying. I am simply going to let you guys know what I have done, and what I am choosing to do.

In the beginning I did not where a helmet, only racers wore helmets, and the topic wasn't really there. In 2000 I believe I was a year or two into park skiing and I decided I should wear a helmet. I was 15 years old and I decided to get a helmet, my parents didn't say anything to me as to weather they thought I should wear one or not, it was a completely independent decision. That lasted about a year and a half, at which time I said "fuck the helmet" and stopped wearing one. I always kept a helmet around because you are forced to wear one when competing, but I did not wear one on my own time... ever. This has been going on ever since. In fact, that past 5 years the helmet I have used for competition has been a skateboarding helmet without a proper chin strap, so it was essentially completely useless as a helmet.

Now, two winters ago I was demoing some rockered skis (K2 Pontoons) and was going to hit this pillow line cautiously, controlling my speed as I went down, but due to the min edge control of the Pontoons, controlling my speed was an impossibility and once I got onto the line, I realized I had no choice but to point it... which I did, but when I tried to dump my speed at the bottom my skis washed out from under me and I was then going at speed, head first towards ever tightening trees. I scratched at the snow and managed to get myself sideways quick enough so that when the inevitable happened (hitting a tree) I wrapped around it on my side, bruising my ribs and stuff, but my head didn't hit a tree. It was an extremely close call, and it should have been a wake up call... but I went down to the base, drank a beer and got over it. That was two years ago.

In march this year i started having anxiety issues. Now, I personally linked them to pot, but blood sugar levels could be a factor. Shit like eating a whole box of nerds in one sitting (while sitting around smoking bongs watching movies), or what is probably the main cause of the anxiety is Happy Planet. When I am hungover, or just feel like I'm ballin' I'll buy some Happy Planet and pretty much chug a full 2L of juice. Without the pulp still in the juice it's hard for the body to digest it properly and your body gets a sugar high of crazy levels... Now, I'm not entirely sure if this is the direct cause of the anxiety, but a friend of mine used to suffer from anxiety and this was the cause... almost fast tracking himself into diabeties, and the anxiety was an early warning system of the body/brain. So, this has nothing to do with skiing or head injuries, but with drug use, anxiety issues and previous concussions, I am starting to realize that the brain is a very fickle thing, and if you mess your brain up, there is no reversing the damage done. Because of this, I am going to buy a proper helmet and use it every day. I like who I am, and I don't want change (physical or mental) forced upon me from outside forces.

That's basically it. The brain is fragile, and I do anything I can (within reason) to protect mine. It won't protect from all falls, but it will help with many. So why wouldn't you wear a helmet? It's personal preference, but I don't see why you wouldn't just take that extra easy step that could help a lot.

this^. seriously...its like wearing your seatbelt, it takes an extra 2 seconds to use something that could potentially save your life, why wouldn't you? i'm all about helmets but i don't hold it against people if they don't (however much i wish they would wear one since they're my friends).

good post man. this is definitely an important topic, and I def agree that more pros wearing helmets is a good thing (and its increased a ton over the years as it is), cause everything they do gets emulated, to the T. However, like^, it needs to be a personal choice. I wear mine all the time, and i dig it. its saved my ass a whole buncha times just in the past season.
