Kind of a callout to some pros

in my opinion it all depends on the way you bail. some of the pros, ecpecially in skateboarding, know how to take a big bail really well without hitting their head. For example. you may see jerry hsu fail to cetch a trey flip on a 7 set and when he has to roll he puts both of his hands on his head and sucks it up to his chest so that his back takes the impact.

Same can be done in skiing, or you can just try and reduce the chances of hitting your head by paying more attention to your skiing....

Oh, and im sure if more of the pros started to wear helmets than alot of people would follow suite.

you really dont get it do you?
im not telling them or even asking them to wear there helmets. like i said pros could give a flying fuck about what I say. all im saying is sit back and think what the sport would be like without some of these guys. whether you guys agree or not and i know its a personal choice either way helmets do prevent injuries from going from minor to major in some cases. its personal preference and if they dont wear it then i could care less but if one of them dies do to not wearing a helmet ill be sad for the loss of a skier but ill still be thinking "i told you so"
sorry i care about our pros. im not telling them what to do. just saying is it really worth it? i didnt create this thread to give them shit about not wearing it i made it to...
A. Bring a good discussion to the forumB. Draw attention to it.C. Have my opinion heard on it.
thats all

ok I know some people will hate me. Like everyone know helmet protect in case of big impact and diminish risk of cerebral injury. But what poeple usualy don't know is that helmet can cause injurie! when you fall and you lay down on the snow or you roll, you'r helmet can catch in the snow and move some vertebra in you'r neck. This end by you in weel chair so helmet can cause injurie to. So I think that helmet is just a personnal choice.

who cares if someone doesn't want to wear a helmet. It's their choice and forcing people to do it would just make the sport suck and open the door for more forced things thus defeating the purpose of FREEstyle.
But anyway, yes helmets are a good idea but for some people they really throw off your balance.not to mention the fact that style is such a huge part of freestyle.some people just don't like them. don't hate on them for it.

hey peter can i ask you a question?
did you happen to read the thread before making this retarded post?

My dad is a snow patrol so this is base on 20 years of experience of injury on ski mountain. Doctor aren't on mountain so they don't know what going on there.

dude your so cool. i wish i could be you. here ill ditch wearing my helmet and act like a dick and then im already half way there. PM me the rest of your gay ass life story so i can become just like you!

i love Tom. But can we please stop using Tom as a reason for everything? Give the guy a break! Everyone wants to be just like him and its probably putting a lot of pressure on him to be a good role model. I know I would not enjoy everyone wanting to everything I do, safe or unsafe.
Also, I wear my helmet all the time! I dont know what itd be like skiign without one. Protect your brain and healthy you'll remain!

Hmm....decent thread topic, and you go and ruin it by being an overly sensitive and defensive douchebag...who quotes himself no less.
Funny thing is I went to "-k" since you "threatened" some one else with it...(is it me or do only the loser kids worried about their NS rep really talk about/use karma?), and wouldn't you know it...I already had you at 0. Shit, I NEVER fuck with karma, so you must reeeaaally be obnoxious. I wish I could remember why...
Anyways, I digress, I just wanted to say "Eat a bowl of dicks".

ha OP is failing. the banner on the right side of my screen flashes tom wearing a helmet every 5 seconds.

helmet argument often fails to recognize that humans are verrrrrry irrational. why can't being a badass be recognized as a ligitimate part of skiing's fun? i mean risking more of your health than necessary is dumb, but doing dumb things because you want to is normal. also people who die being badasses are often remembered and praised, but thats a little different topic.

Its funny how similar the helmets thing is in inline. Vast majority of pros in inline don't wear helmets yettt they tell beginner to wear all the safety gear. But beginners don't do crazy handrails and massive drops... And on drops I have seen a lot of pros smack their heads pretty hard when they land switch and they don't even seem to put helmets on for bid drops. So idk kinda seems weird to me but its their decession I guess. Good to see in skiing the majority of pros wearing helemets.

oh and i never fuck with karma anyways unless someone goes out of their way to be a douchebag aka the person that just comes in here saying "stupid thread" or whatever he said. didnt contribute anything, just went out of his way to be a dick so he could get one more post.
thats the only reason why ill ever lower anyone's karma. other than that i dont really fuck with it.

Good topic but it has been said its all personal preference and mine is to always were helmets, I just dont see why not, if you get a comfy/low profile helmet it will look good and protect you.

Wow...two responses to the same post? I must've really struck a chord with you bud.
Despite your, ahem, "joke" ^, it's clear that you did in fact take it into consideration.

i posted in the last helmet thread this

do you really need to save a brain that doesnt think it needs a helmet participating in dangerous activities? survival of the fittest. hopefully they dont breed before they get brain damage.

skiing itself as a sport is dangerous enough. the pros are throwing down so hard, doing such crazy shit. any moment, any trick, that they do while skiing, not wearing a helmet, they could possibly die from a head injury, or be badly injured. i just don't get it. if skiing's already dangerous enough, and we make it more dangerous, don't you think you'd want to do everything in your power to protect your brain, the most important part of your body? it may be a personal decision, but it's completely stupid not to wear one. and if you get a good helmet, you can keep it for a few years. it's not THAT expensive, and still much much cheaper than the medical bills you'd be paying if/when you get hurt. the good one's are light and comfortable, and you barely realize it's sitting atop your head.

my point is is that there's no good reason or excuse not to wear one.

Enough so that you felt the need to make a terrible attempt to save face— twice.
Just face it, you're a lame.

People who don't are just that idiot, we dont need to give them advice of why they should wear one, because they actually dont want to understand so it not worth it. the only thing I can say is if I ever see one guy bail from anything on the mountain without a helmet I just wont stop, got no respect for them.

Very well put. The saying 'there are lies, damned lies, and statistics' is often misleading. Statistics don't lie, PEOPLE lie when they attribute values to statistics.

Whenever you see a "statistics show" type comment, try to find out as much as possible about the experiment. The point made in the post I quoted about avalanche awareness is a good one. A true measure would be two groups of people, one with avalanche safety under their belt, one without. Both groups go into the backcountry a similar number of times, in similar conditions. In that case I would think the group with knowledge would be far less likely to die.

Some people might be more likely to try things with a helmet, but each one of us is an individual. If you never wear a helmet, are there really times you are lining something up and saying to yourself 'man if I had a helmet on I would do this?' The only real difference I see would be someone who occasionally wears one. To me, the solution is to always wear one. I have not skied without a helmet in 10 years, so it is a part of my everyday experience. It does not cause me to do things I otherwise would not. If you wear one every time you ski It will not affect your decision making process.

If you take all skiers out there, the ones with helmets might have more injuries, but that is likely because they tend to be better skiers and take bigger risks. Wearing the helmet would not be the cause of such statistical data.

hahaha
yeah none of the coaches at windells wear helmets when i've been there, it seems like they would more often because they're role models, and if they didn't want to be role models they shouldn't have gotten so good at skiing...

you know what would make skiing safer? I bet very few of the people on the site can reel off all 7 rules of the skier responsiblity code off the top of their heads. If all these rules were followed.. ESPECIALLY  #1 STAY IN CONTROL

+1

The odds of a helmet hurting you compared to the odds of it helping you are astronomically low. It is pretty ridiculous to NOT wear a helmet for safety issues.

but srsly...

i'd rather ski for the rest of my life with no style and no steeze than to take one fall without a helmet and end up suffering from the consequences for the rest of my life.

I agree with you....
The "helmet can actually HURT you" argument, sounds eerily similar to the "seatbelt can actually HURT you" argument.
While both of those statements may be fundamentally true, the likelihood of either occurring is negligibly low, and utterly insignificant when compared to the amount of good thy do.
Let me qualify this statement with the fact that I do not actually where a helmet myself. I'm 25, I don't do inverts, and I come from a time when helmets weren't worn.

despite our prior arguments, good post.

i know this is gonna sound fruity but im not trying to make any enemies so sorry

its complicated and chances are its still probably better to wear one but i think its the way it makes your neck roll in some situations when you land
