Just watched Under the Influence

So i just picked up the dvd today and thought i'd voice my opinion. The skiing was absolutely incredible, seths and sages segments were mind blowing and if your more into backcountry skiing this is a must have. Also some incredible sunset shots and a great segment for sammy. However, parts of the movie really got to me. In particular the narration between each segment in a dry, monotone, and dull voice that gave the impression that the movie was geared more towards gapers almost. I get so annoyed with this for a moment i was yelling at the tv for him to shut the fuck up. Also, while tgr always has different music for sure, i really didn't like this soundtrack, some of it fit but alot of it didn't. And for once, just once, i would love to see Dana's incredible skiing to a song that isn't some horrible hard rock song. His segment would have been awesome if i wasn't so incredibly tempted to turn the tv on mute. Anyone else seen it yet and feel the same way?

After seth hated on tanner and the quote "jibbers" that have been holding him back, i pretty much didn't wanna watch anymore. His section was sub par. go buy the massive and then you'll see some backcountry rippring. and as far as sage. he has absolutely no style, and is really boring to watch. The only bright spot was sammy
this is all in my personal opinion of course, no hate

And if your opinion is hateful? Not that I give a shit. UTI sounds a lot like lost and found, sick skiing, shitty music and editing~

yeah the soundtrack killed it for me this year.....usually they have good and unique music. like the soundtrack for anomaly i thought was amazing. but this year was very disapointing..as far as skiing goes...sammy killed it. ive always been a fan of sage and seth and it was nice to see them ripping. It seemed like they rushed in putting it together....i donno...it just didnt seem as well done as previous years in terms of editing and quality. i almost got bored with all the AK in it which i thought would be impossible. it used to be that AK was this great skiing frontier and it still is sort of but not to the extent that it deserves 80% of the movie. it's become unoriginal and not as innovative as it once was.....and I felt like they were just falling back on all the AK. overall, i was dissapointed and i really want to see TGR put together another good film like they have past years. that's just my two cents

not hate, response to the hate that was given in the movie.... oh and maybe the sage part was a little bit of hate. Just starting out the movie with what seth said ruined it for me. you dont call out tanner and those "jibbers" like that, especially when you're not killing it has hard as they are.

I don't see how you can call seth's part sub par. Did you not see those huge flips. The soundtrack sucked though and the editing was unoriginal.

Anyone else disappointed by kyes part? After lost and found i thought he was gonna kill it this year but just about everyone of his drops, while they are kinda intense, hes flailing like crazy, i just had such high hopes for his segment but they didn't come true.

huge flips? he passed up cliffs that he used to do doubles off of to straight air others.and he did like 2 or 3 that whole section. Compare that to sammy or tanner in the massive. that's all i'm saying. I guess i expect more out of him.

Well that was the only movie i've ever seen with seth in it and he is past his prime. still blew my mind. tanner doesn't charge big mountain like seth. he slays backcountry like pillows and stuff but for pure big mountain seth takes the cake.

very well put. but if youve seen the massive.and dana's gnarly spine charge
but like you said, he's past his prime, seth took the cake like 3+ years ago.
but he still does it better than i could, no doubt.

I saw The Massive. It was cool but I didn't like the editing enough to buy it. I never got around to seeing Believe and I'd still like to.

yamaybe i'm just over big mountain riding this yearjust seems like there's a lot this year.i'm always down for a majority of park urban than backcountry, but that's just me

i dont know if its me but i think small time film crews like 4bi9, stonebrooke, and ATA are putting out cooler shit than pbp matchstick and tgr latelyIdea was super dope tho

you need help son. immediately.

to right the terrible wrong that was your post, you should acknowledge that not only does sage charge some of the gnarliest lines of the year, every year, but he also does it ridiculously smoothly and with abundant style. i daresay you would prefer him to be wearing a tall tee that is more akin to a dress than a shirt and a pair of crowbars?

But yeah, you're right, Tanner and Sammy rip big mtn far harder than seth and sage....

NO.

i am saddened if seth had a shit part, i was looking forward to his part this year out of anyones.

i have not gotten mine in the mail yet, so i dont know how much footy todd used from NCHS. but i can assure you they were killing it up there despite the fact that it hadnt snowed in weeks. and seth and sage had POVs on the whole time, so hopefully theres some good headcam shots in there.

I really doubt you be disappointed, maybe i need to watch it again but i thought his segment was sick as they always are. And i haven't seen massive yet so i can't compare.

it honestly just comes down to what i'd rather watch compared to what you would. I dont enjoy seth or sage ripping through a line and straight airing big cliffs as much as tanner, tim, sammy, or other park guys floating tricks off the cliffs or doing similar stuff switch. Ya sage and seth go huge and huck mad flips, but i would rather watch some jibbers do switch cork 5s off those same cliffs anyday
no, i dont need help, i just like something different than you.

He just said that in the past he couldn't push himself as hard as he could this year. Imagine you're skiing with pep, eric and tanner. Not to take anything away from them, but sage, jeremy jones, dana flahr, and ian mcintosh are better big mountain skiers than them. If you're skiing with a crew like that, there's no chance of something nuts NOT happening. Although tanner has progressed into a pretty burly skier. NO HATE. Pep an eric are no slouches either.

Oh, and I ditto the opinion about movie. Before I thought I only thought about skiing, I never thought I cared about editing and stuff because I usually liked the majority of ski movies every year, even though they were all different. But UTI had sick skiing, but I was unimpressed because of the retarded voiceover and I followed the TGR blog all year, and I swear they got so much more banger footage than that. Seth was sick, Sage was sick, Kye skied some pretty crazy lines. Ian skied a BUTCH double. Dana also killed it. All the skiing was off the hook. If you've seen the spoof on mspTV where its like "Haines Alaska" and Mark crashes on the big cliff, that's pretty much what the whole movie is like. Sick skiing, but seems like it's directed at gapers.

No hate towards anyone but I think the Nimbus crew does a better job slaying the backcountry, I'm not saying Tanner doesn't slay. Especially if you're talking about pillows. But BC is almost all of what they do.

when I watched this movie the theater had the volume turned up way to high and so I dont really have a fare opinion on the music because I couldn't really hear it, only ringing. but I actually really enjoyed the movie, I didn't have any high expectations for it so that may partly be why, but sammys part, and the intro to i think sages part, I like that.

I don't think it should be looked as so much as a dis to tanner and other jibbers but more of a compliment on the crew hes skiing with for tgr and how stoked he is to ski with them

i can't wait for my copy to come but i hear you about dana, one of the things that pisses me off about msp is that they always give douglas these hard rock songs and it just makes the segment less enjoyable and tgr has that problem with flahr and sometimes with seth alsobut i'm more of a backcountry person so the skiing aspect sounds sick

uh... backcountry and what seth and sage are doing are two completely different things. Tanner is NOT spinning off these same cliffs. I can guarentee that much. These cliffs are far more gnar.

That being said I agree with what someone else say further up. The nimbus crew is by far the best backcountry crew. Seth and his crew are the best big mountain. Tanner is starting to do some sick stuff, but Nimbus does it with unbelievable style and stoke and that makes it far better in my eyes.

believe is much better than the massive. The massive was good, but didnt compare in my opinion to believe

I think you are deeply confused and/or have been smoking some seriously wierd shit that is making you see things. When have you seen Tanner, Sammy or anyone for that matter ski a 50 degree spine switch? And as the other guy pointed out, they are sure as fuck not spinning off the same cliffs as guys in the big league. If anybody's spinning off them its sage or dana...

dana had the worst closing section of all time in this movie. the movie was not up to what tgr WAS capable of a few years ago.

how can someone compare seths, danas, ians big mountain skiing with skiing by tanner or sammy? its totally diferent level...

i was just agreeing with you and saying you can like your shit, i'll like mine. i never said they could ski a 50 degree spine switch did i? maybe you're the one thats been smoking the weird shit. And as far as you trying to hate on tim or whoever else, just get over it. All i'm saying is id rather see a park rider in the big mountain, to me its more exciting because i dont really like to watch it. also, sage and dana do spin off cliffs, but not with the style (in my opinion) as the jibbers that go into the backcountry.

I have not seen the movie yet but as far as what seth said he was pointing out how you progress more when you're with better skiers, and that helped him this year, so since movies are all becoming more ski documentaries it does make since that they wanted it in the movie.

So I watched it last night at a premiere. It was a weird venue, a place where I used to play show and go and watch other bands play. They had their PA set up with a DVD player hooked up to it, all on stage and a white sheet behind the stage for the projector. One of the guys putting it on was a TGR marketing intern. He was super chill, as we walked in he came to me and my friends and said "$5 grab a cup, fill it up as much as you want and just pretend like your at a buddies house" We are all 20 BTW.

Now for the movie; I honestly cant believe how you guys are hating on this movie. Well actually I can if your a park rat you probably wouldnt have liked it but besides that. Sage and Ian Mcintosh charged so fucking hard. Sage's opening shot was so absurd I dont remember the last time a movie got me that stoked to ski. Sure Seth is past his prime, the guy is like 31 isnt he? But he still ripped hard core. Ian Mcintosh brought up a good point when he said "I'm not out here trying to learn new tricks, Im out here trying to survive the mountains" or something like that. The Jackson segments as always were ridiculous. It was cool to see a cliff that myself, Miralas, and Ferrinski86 all hit consecutively and ate shit under the lift being in there movie. Sammy had a good part but I was a little dissapointed; It said that he was at targhee for 5 days, yet all it showed was some jumps and some pretty cool jibs. Maybe the snow sucked that week but he should have been out charging for the camera as well.

All in all, I thought it was a really good movie. Definitely worth purchasing. Definitely not comparable to the stuff Tanner is doing or the stuff the Nimbus guys are doing. No hate on them, I own Hunting Yeti and plan on getting the Massive.

It wasn't hate. You have to watch it and hear him say it. I guess it could be perceived as hate, but as has been mentioned, but I think that it was a compliment to the crew he was skiing with.

I have to agree this was nothing to brag about for TGR. I have seen all of TGR's movies, even the jib and pipe movies, I have to say this one was pretty low for me. The soundtrack was terrible. Ofter watching Tangerine Dream, Anomaly, and Lost and Found I bought every song in those movies. On a lighter note, the cinematography (as usual) was breath taking. Cable, follow, helmet, and heli cams were spot on. The segment transition narations were awful, really detracted from the movie. Acompaning the narations was a splatter of paint with the skiiers name. I hated this, I liked the style used in the past with just a name bar at the bottom, somthing less subtle. Skiing was deffenately good. Unfortunately it was somwhat dry. There were somtimes when I was like "drop that cliff" and a skier would avoid it of drop off a lower point. Most cliff drops were straight (other that a few fronts and backs) in the past I have seen huge corks and spins. I expected more advanced stuff. Maybe a few urban run (I know that would be uncharacteristic for TGR) but it would have been a good change, maybe a few risky tree bonks, somthing along those lines.

If this is your first time watching a TGR flick, try Anomaly or Tangerine Dream first.

gotta say, this is one of the best argued and most intelligent threads ive seen.

and that voiceover in UTI... wow. complete shit. BUT whoever said sage has no style needs to get fucked. sage CA fucking kills.

"jibbers" dont do switch cork 5's off cliffs remotely like the ones seth and sage ski in ak. ya tanner and those guys do sick shit in the backcountry(TOTALLY sick, no hate on tanner), but the reason sage and seth either straight air or front/back flip most of the cliffs, is cuz theyre skiing 50 degree lines at 60 miles an hour. You dont really do anything more than a straight air or flip off that kinda cliff. If any "jibbers" you talk about do any switch cork 5s off some straight AK style cliffs(50 degrees, 60 miles an hour), let me know.
