Just Starting, need tips

Hello. This is my first year attempting at freestyle skiing and it has gone quiet bad. I can 50/50 a box, 180, and do straight airs on jumps. I really want to get good but I never seem to get the guts to try that next move. Any advice? Also I want to know what I should try to learn next so I can progress faster.

Obviously being able to ski is very important. But really dial in your switch skiing game first before taking it to the park. A lot of tricks involve landing backwards. Youtube is also your friend so watch some videos on sliding rails etc..

Yes I have watched loads of youtube from Henrik and Phil shredding the park or just nobody's. I also have checked out tutorials. I will start to work on switch skiing like you said. Any reccomendations for what to learn after I get switch down? Thanks for the help

But on a more serious note...

~You can never bend your knees too much

~widen your stance

~practice balance and not flailing your arms

~ski with people better than you and ask for help

~always have goals

~start small and work you way up

~watch video tutorials

~get your ski edges dulled down a bit to not catch (videos on this all over)

~DON'T LEAN BACK ON RAILS

~be confident

~don't talk shit until you are your hometown hero

I hope this helped, if you have questions you can reply, also I am not the best skier by any means...

but these are some of the lessons I have learned from a few years of tears and bruises.

Good luck!

Alright will do. Thanks for the help. I will work on the knees. What should I try to learn first in the park?

start small, 180s and slides on boxes. Once you feel comfortable with that move on to flat rails. Dont neglet sliding rails/boxes both ways since it will make switch ups easier in the future. And skiing with people better than you is nice for progressing no doubt

after learning ho to ski switch and you can carve backwards, going sideways on a box is the next step. its literally all in the upper body. right before you come on to the box just turn your hips and upper body which ever way seems most comfortable. for me i spin naturally to the left. once you learn to go sideways you gotta learn to pretzel, which is gripping the rail or box with the edge of your forward ski in order to spin off of it. after that spend some time in the air , try to huck a 3 around. don't forget to switch skis every few weeks to keep edge damage under control!

Alright. I will keep that in mind. Going skiing with a friend tomorrow that is definitely better than me. I will work on my 180s and boxes. Thanks for the help

Alright thanks. I can do boxes but how would I pretzel?

Skiing is like maths. You either get some things straight away or you need help. So learning to pretzel may take a few attempts like learning algebra. But overall practice makes perfect. YouTube is always helpful and skiing with buddies. But remember to have fun. Don't best yourself up because you can't get the truck right away.

Alright thanks for all the help man

This thread is great. Welcome to newschoolers! Stoked that you are into it and want to get better. My biggest advice to you is to have fun because thats what this is all about.

After that here are a few pointers:

Always ski faster than you think you need.

Don't be afraid to fall when you are thinking about trying something new. You are gonna fall, but that means you are learning.

Don't be shy to try things when other skiers are around. No one is gonna hate on you for trying, and if they do then they don't matter anyway. Chances are someone will give you some pointers if they see you are going for it.

With that said, feel free to talk to anyone at the park. Literally all of my closest friends are people from the mountain. Having friends around make things more fun and you'll feel better about trying harder things.

And don't forget, as mentioned earlier, Lip on blind 2 is the only trick in the world. That should be your biggest goal to work towards.

Hello OP! This was my first year of park too and it was everything hing I wanted it to be.

-Really get that forward pressure in the boot.

-Learn to ride switch on some runs, this will come really handy later.

-Slide some boxes, get a nice stance with forward pressure and pop onto it. Look at the end the whole time, not your skis. You should feel comfy and relaxed on the box, don't feel like your forcing it, and keep your hands next your hips, that helps a lot.

-For rails and jumps, time the pop. I know it sounds really stupid, but if you pop while your tips aren't even off the lip, you won't go as high, let like half of you ski be off the lip before you pop.sounds retarded but you will be able to pop onto rails better

-for spins, don't stop your body motion, have someone video you, youllmprogress faster and know what your doing wrong, spin your shoulders and head around and your feet will follow, don't forget to pop everytime

-Everything is about balls, if you don't try something you never know what will happen, looking back at the start of the season I pussyed out of tubes and easy boxes. Now that I see them from my ability now, I can do them with my eyes closed. They aren't as hard as you think, it's all about your mental block. You'll probly end up enjoying the feature you finally hit after being a pussy about it all week or day or whatever.

-just do you, don't let that one kid stop you from progressing and have fun doing it

i always learn the most when im riding with my friends and not concentrating crazy hard that way i dont over think it and psych myself out. also you can try playing a game of snow with other people the friendly competition can sometimes push you to do stuff. plus if yoyu dont know how to do the trick they just did they will usually tell you how its kind of a way to get tips without being the guy who constyantly asks people how to do shit and annoy the crap out of them

you guys are all fucking over thinking it just go in the park and try to mimic what someone better than you is doing keep hitting shit and don't be a pussy thats how your going to get good

Don't listen to the don't be a pussy thing... You will work up confidence you don't need to just throw yourself around to try to get better... have fun, ski with people better than you (that can hopefully coach you a little), and watch a lot of ski videos on your down time to better understand the tricks you want to try.
