I wouldn't call it a big ol' fail. According to tests I've read, they are more of a high speed/big mountain ski for powder days, than a powder ski for playing around in the backcountry.
They are also according to the same test really stable, and have a feeling of security and quality.
By the way, I noticed Sverre Liliequist rocking these in the freeride world tour, so I guess they are good for his use.
But as you say, it's really heavy (due to steel reinforcement).
