anybody here read Ishmael by daniel quinn, or any of his other work, what did u think

finished it today.

One of the greatest books ever.

It tells you how to save the world..what more can you ask for?

ye ive read most of his books story of b, my ishmael, beyond civilization, providence, and im reading after dachau now, his books didnt really show me new ideas, they were all ideas that i had in my head but didnt know how to get out, or put them together, when i stumbled across ishmael it answered a lot of the questions i had and helped me to understand my thoughts better

not just agriculturists, totalitarion agriculturists, ones that keep food under lock and key, theres lots of leaver peoples that depend on agriculture

and the temptation for 'life'...adams apple, the fruit of life, and bringing it into the world.

that was a wickid way of showing the symbols of the bible...and it showed them in a light where it goes against most peoples faith in christainity...it's all quite comical actually.

its not about how we should live, its about finding ways that work, theres no one right way for us to live, first because theres no one way that everybody will like equally and second because the more people that compete for the saame resources the more competition there is, in diversity we eliminate the competetion and make it easier to live

ways that sustain life, obviously the way we live, at least when theres 6 billion people living that way doesnt work, because its going to drive us to extinction.

I think you're too focused.....you're trying to explain a point by only focusing one one aspect of it.

Does our society 'work' because we life longer? because we are healthier?

ok, now what about the natural world?

we are healthy and long lived, but our forests are dying, and so is the world....

If I went through them all, not a single society or culture has 'worked'.

by my definition.

My definition of 'work' is having a way of life that relentlessly persues a higher understanding of living. The more understanding someone is, the better choices they make, and a better life they will live.

am I wrong?

see, the thing isnt how we live, its how we seem to think that weve found the one and only right way to live, and we think we have to make everybody live that way. if there was only a small group of people that live like we do, devouring resources and polluting and such it would have no impact on the world, but with 6 billion it becomes a problem.

and about our way working, so far it worked, because the things that will destroy it dont take effect untill theres tons of people in on it. and then it gets all fucked up, and it wont work anymore.

and i could tell u a lot of ways of cultures that had a way that worked for them, pretty much any people described as being leavers under quinns definition. if they decide at one point that they dont like the lifestyle they waalk away from it, we feel that since we have then 'right' way to live that we have to stick with it at all costs.

I've read it. I just made a reference to this book in a post the other day. Probably the most insightful book I've ever read. Story of B is pretty damn good too. I haven't read The Holy, but my roommate has and he said it was fucking weird. He said it was all about Demons and Satan and generally freaky shit.

wow we listened to the story tape of this in grade 7 and had to write and essay on 'Does the world belong to man or does man belong to the world.' I remember it being a really good story.

it had good ideas but i ust found it so damn boring.... there was no plot! just the givers and takers and the over used 'yes, i think i understand now' good messages though

haha, but ye some people might find it boring, but the plot isnt the point of the book, the plot that quinn used is just an effective way of delivering a complicated message that can still be understood by the average joe

I haven't read it, but I intend to. However, in the meantime, I'd like to challenge Skipimp_'s claim that evoking contemplation is 'what makes a good book'. There, in fact, such a thing as art for art's sake, and although I'm a thinker on the whole, as far as art's concerned, I have to say that there's something to be said for aesthetics. Art doesn't have to, nay, shouldn't have any deep meaning. That's education. It doesn't reflect life, we take life from it. Going against these principles ruins great art. Anyways, sorry for my little tirade, I know it has nothing to do with the whole discussion. I'd like to post the entire aesthetic argument, but it's long and would hijack the thread.
