Is Eileen Gu Competing for China Problematic?

Meanwhile, Eileen cleans up Dew Tour pipe with her B run and is about to dominate Slopestyle today as well.

Nobody ever said that skiing wasn’t a hyper privileged sport. But if ANYONE (male, female, black, white, purple)with that kind of upbringing decides to compete for the Xi and the CCP in favor of their home country (for money), they are a massive sellout POS in my book :)

OH YEAH BRO! SHE SHOULD COMPETE FOR THE U.S. BECAUSE THE OLYMPICS ARE ABOUT SCORING POINTS FOR GOVERNMENTS! FUCK THE ATHLETES AND WHAT'S BEST FOR THEIR SHORT CAREERS!

Nothing like a fat fuck with multiple NS accounts to dictate what the best athletes in the world should do with their careers.

Yeah. Every time Eileen puts up a W, a sexist racist circle jerk, poorly masked by some PC veil of "not competing for America" pops up about her.

Foreign-born Olympians are super common. Besides, who ever said Eileen doesn't identify with her Chinese heritage? It's the same 50% as her American heritage.

if she competed for the country she was born in no one would be saying a word it’s that simple

the chinese government and probably people would not enjoy seeing one of their home grown athletes competing for america would they?

Yeah man because as the rules state, you must compete for the country you were born in. You idiots and your nationalistic nonsense are so fucking pathetic. With all the racist bullshit happening in the U.S. against Asian Americans, including this thread, are you that surprised at her decision?

Every Olympics hundreds of athletes compete for countries they weren't born into but somehow for some reason, the woman Asian skier is the big controversial topic. I wonder why....

If what you are saying is true then why does she live in America, train in America, and go to college at Stanford in America? If the US is such a xenophobic hell hole for asians why would she want to live here?

The reasons are all financial reasons, that's acceptable. But stop trying to spin it any other way, it's for a paycheck.

Because as we all know, teens have complete control over where they were born and where they live with their parents. Also, its like totally bad for extreme athletes with historically short careers to try to cash out on their limited fame. Like NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER DONE THIS BEFORE.

I love it when white boys grab at every straw possible in order to justify their clearly racist-based opinions.

Or the Chinese people know how to work hard.

China also finances their athletes and provide universal healthcare so she's covered if she's injured. The U.S. doesn't fund their athletes and she can wind up with a $800,000 medical bill if she blows a knee.

Again, she's making the right choice here.

So she didn't make a conscious decision to attend Stanford? There's lots of universities in China she could've studied at, you know because she's representing China the country she wasn't born in, doesn't train in and has consistently made the choice after she turned 18 to not live in.

Like I said above man it's for a paycheck I understand that. I don't like building financial models all day but I do it for a better paycheck. But don't try and twist it as she's making some stand against xenophobia/ racism toward asians in the United States.

It makes more sense for Alex hall to compete for Italy than it does Eileen to compete for China, he actually holds dual citizenship there. The difference is Alex Hall would get obliterated by the internet and his peers if he did while being a favorite to win gold/ easily qualifying from the American team.

These are facts

Yea bro it's totally fair to use every asset the US ski team has in park city like the water ramps, tramps, private jump builds and then dip out and compete for another country in which you spent 0 time forming your athletic skills at then in your broken brain say it's because the country is racist and bad that's why you spend your entire career training and living there. It's for a paycheck, no other reason.

Even the god damn Jamaican bob sled team trains in Jamaica part time. ?

Been to China 20+ times for manufacturing. It is a country obsessed with fashion brands and luxury - at least in the metro areas - there is a total obsession with western culture and fashion. Walk through the airport or the subway - there are more white models flaunting D+B, LV, Chanel - plastered over the walls - than there are in the US. It's insane - the materialism in China today is super super odd. On the road, if you drive a Mercedes, you have priority - visual materialism is culture.

Enter Eileen. As a Tahoe skier born in SF, couldn't be more stoked for her. She's dropping hammers in slope and pipe like its 2007. She's also living a glamorous lifestyle courtesy of fashion modeling for these huge brands. Amazing! Like, all of your white-cis skier dreams - imagine being the best skier on earth, above the level of Henrik - and also a fashion model globetrotting eating shrimp and linguine looking fierce af between skiing.

The call to compete for China is interesting. Her alignment with fashion probably plays a part in this materialist culture - looking for their own icons to plaster on the walls of the subway. The surname Gu ("顾") descends from the kings of the first hereditary dynasty in China, as if she was related to George Washington here, but actually about 1,000 years longer.

Speaking of USA - whats it like to be Chinese in the US? Well, they have been in California since the gold rush - building the railroad- the bottom of Lake Tahoe is known as a mass grave for them. They've faced incessant racism for decades in the US - culminating in murders in San Francisco of elderly asian folks in the last two years. But hey it's a free country! Many of the Chinese descendants in San Francisco flew the Maoist revolution - a bloody mess much worse than our civil war.

We are two generations removed from slavery and Native American land grabs in the US. Slavery for 400 years! 400! The lawlessness, the violations of human rights, which our country is built on and is the majority of our history - its not pretty - and the result lingers today in policing and jails. The Native Americans are like the Uighurs - we yanked the young from their families in the name of Jesus to send them to boarding schools - cultural 'purification.' They were conquered entirely - land stolen - cultures eradicated. Both African Americans and Native Americans. That is our history as a nation!

Today - we can accept this truth - we can move forward - we can reform as a country, but it does not change the past. China is currently violating the Uighurs as we did to our people in the past - and practicing gnarly draconianism with surveillance as well, which is not pretty. But it's not that different. Social score = credit score.

So, given her DECISION - what does the US mean to her, versus China? Sure, we have SPT technology built terrain parks, and training facilities, and a bunch of other great stuff compared to China. I would NEVER live there - America is pretty damn awesome. However, competing in the Olympics is representing - and I bet the decision came down to, what do you choose to represent? A country where Asian Americans in your hometown are being senselessly murdered in the current year, or a country with a connected history to your own bloodline - the oldest contiguous civilization in the world. I wonder what means the most to her?

The San Francisco police chief estimates there have been 59 hate crimes purported against Asian people in the city this year. The attacks are heavily investigated and the purp goes to prison if found.

China is committing genocide and placing muslims into work camps for following a different religion. It's sanctioned by the government and we don't even have a number as to how many they've killed.

I wonder what means most to her? Money, that's why she's doing this entire thing. It has nothing to do with racism towards Asians in America.

Yeah. That’s the real problem. The Chinese government is not great, I certainly would not want to be on their payroll for ethical reasons. Let alone make the conscious decision to do so while living abroad in a country where we have plenty of access to the information about it.

Ive seen a lot of talk about hate crimes against Asian Americans as a defense to this, the problem is, those aren’t state sanctioned.

We don’t pay Americans money to commit crimes against other Americans. The genocide in China is state sanctioned.

I don’t know how much fun the jet setting modeling pro skier life is, but apparently it’s enough fun to overlook the genocide.

This last bolded sentence would have been completely incomprehensible in 2003. The closest thing we had then was Jonny Moseley and he was derided on these very forums as a sell out for having a shitty video game and competing in FIS events.

Yeah bro, because the UOP is really struggling for funds and prodigy skiers from other counties using their facilities will like TOTALLY bankrupt them. You are so pathetic caring about this stupid shit.

Also why would you choose to compete for a country where, as an athlete, if you speak up about abuse you received by coaching staff you disappear off the face of the earth with the only 'proof' of actually being alive being an obviously scripted message on state-owned media? I can't imagine a world where, given the choice between competing for China or the US, I would choose China and quite literally put my existence in the hands of a crackpot dictator and his regime.

Just found this on the article that first announced it - kinda wild tbh.....

"While the Olympics allow athletes with dual citizenship to choose which country to represent, Gu is required by Chinese law not to keep her American nationality because the country does not recognize dual citizenship."

so much for "breaking the divide between nations through passion and love" which is also what the article listed as her reason for making the switch. That said, she was 15 at the time so I'm thiiiinking this was probably her agent/manager/parent/gaurdians call to get that bread.

I find it retarded that you think the reason she's competing for China and not America is because of racism towards Asians in America. It's entirely for money, and it has to be a lot of god damn money because the alleged xenophobic American olympic team has made Chloe Kim (an asian American) a poster child for the country and a household name with pro model Oakleys and getting free Toyotas.

Eileen's getting her bag, I respect that, can't knock the hustle. But I had to correct you in the absolute GARBAGE take that she's representing for China because of political climate/ racism in the US.
