It makes more sense for Alex hall to compete for Italy than it does Eileen to compete for China, he actually holds dual citizenship there. The difference is Alex Hall would get obliterated by the internet and his peers if he did while being a favorite to win gold/ easily qualifying from the American team.

Been to China 20+ times for manufacturing. It is a country obsessed with fashion brands and luxury - at least in the metro areas - there is a total obsession with western culture and fashion. Walk through the airport or the subway - there are more white models flaunting D+B, LV, Chanel - plastered over the walls - than there are in the US. It's insane - the materialism in China today is super super odd. On the road, if you drive a Mercedes, you have priority - visual materialism is culture.
Enter Eileen. As a Tahoe skier born in SF, couldn't be more stoked for her. She's dropping hammers in slope and pipe like its 2007. She's also living a glamorous lifestyle courtesy of fashion modeling for these huge brands. Amazing! Like, all of your white-cis skier dreams - imagine being the best skier on earth, above the level of Henrik - and also a fashion model globetrotting eating shrimp and linguine looking fierce af between skiing.
The call to compete for China is interesting. Her alignment with fashion probably plays a part in this materialist culture - looking for their own icons to plaster on the walls of the subway. Also why would you choose to compete for a country where, as an athlete, if you speak up about abuse you received by coaching staff you disappear off the face of the earth with the only 'proof' of actually being alive being an obviously scripted message on state-owned media? I can't imagine a world where, given the choice between competing for China or the US, I would choose China and quite literally put my existence in the hands of a crackpot dictator and his regime.
