I did this during the summer.
Dongles:
Apple sells a
dongle for SD to their port, and it also comes with a USB to their port. ($29) Unfortunately, since it hasn't been updated to fit the new attachment slot on the iPad 3, iPad Mini, iPhone 5, etc. So you'd have to purchase the
30 pin to lightning adapter ($29)
At this point, you've already spent $58 on this, which, if you have the money, sounds like a decent investment.
Importing:
Once you plug in the camera to the dongle, open up Photos, and it'll help you import the photos/videos.

Apps for editing:
I used Avid Studio for iPad, but you have some other choices.
