I personally disagree, I think it helps skiing grow and expand to a wider audience. Considering as there are so many people on here that say skiing is "dying" or "Olympics are killing skiing" I thought this article was interesting and relevant.

Not to mention the author is one of the only other people with my name. hahaha
 
disagree, the internet is helping expand the sport and connect skiers from all over the world

think about this, skiers from the east coast, canada, and possibly even new zealand or england will read this post, all of them skiers and all of them stoked on the sport, the internet is definitely not killing the sport
 
I say very little thought was put into that article.. I mean, just read it. As far as I'm concerned that may have been written by a seventh grader.

There's no sense of causerie or sarcasm in there, just some weird from of bitterness that I can't understand. It's like an old man who was good at long jump suddenly creaks his back and can't compete with the new rules and talents of the trade, then gets mad and makes the shittiest possible rant for his hipsterish views on how skiing was "Oh-so-real" ten or so years ago, or even earlier.

I have fun skiing, ns, tgr, that fucking guy aren't going to change that.

he never said skiing wasnt fun. i think he was just saying that all the media has ruined the uniqueness of skiing like how everyone makes edits and they arent really that different so it gets boring seeing the same thing all the time. the "internet" is simply monkey see monkey do, lets copy that because it looked cool
 
not really sure if this has to do with this thread but here is what is always in my mind. Dont get me wrong, i love skiing as much as all of u guys if not more... But what i constantly think is where does skiing have left to go. Park skiing started way back and has been expanding from single flips, to double and now to triples same with rails and urban. Where do we have to go now, quads? NO! and every creative urban feature has been already filmed by someone out there. Where is there to expand to, different styles? Will movies still have those wtf moments later on or will they just be time killers in the off season. I love skiing and will keep skiing forever but this is just an oppinion i have. /rant inb4 didnt read lol, cool story bro or whatever.....

Clearly he is a lazy asshole who doesn't actually ski because if he did he'd notice that while many people ARE documenting their exploits, some of the BEST out there go out of their way to stay out of the limelight. People with names you'll never hear doing one-of-a-kind crazy shit you will only hear about in passing, if at all.

But he wouldn't know that, since clearly his knowledge of skiing is entirely based off of the internet. What a sad fucking life 'Zander' must live...

Now that I look at it, I think it truly was sarcasm, I mean really he works for a skiing website that posts videos, stories and hosts forums all about skiing. I completely disagree as well.

Terrible article, he didn't use any evidence to back his opinion... all he did was complain about the current state of skiing on the net

Without the internet, and this site especially, we wouldnt have X games athletes like wallisch, gus kenworthy. Riders like henrik and b dog wouldnt be showing the other side of freeskiing to outsiders who think our sport is limited to events like the X Games.

He states -

Wtf does that even mean? Its not like young skiers are replacing the idea of hitting a real urban rail by sitting on the couch and watching Hornbeck do it. If anything, it will inspire kids to go out and try it.

He complains about "like 6 original crews" that used to make a decent film, as if there are now hundreds of new crews flooding the market with videos. News Flash: There were about 4 major crews (MSP, poor boyz, matchstick, TGR) excluding Level 1 and Rage (pardon me if i forgot any). All of them except for Rage still exist and dominate the market.

I could write more but i feel like most people agree with me.

If anything, this guy cares too much about what other people are doing and neglects to have fun skiing for himself. This article, if we could even call it that, really rustled my jimmies

when i watch summer setup edits here on ns, i don't think, "hey, now i don't have to hit my jib anymore, i can just watch it on ns!"

his opinion makes little sense to me. i was ski movies to get stoked for skiing, not to do instead of skiing. i hope the day never comes where i pick up a laptop over my skis

also lesh was removed as a coach by the vice chancellor or some other high up at the university because of his last friday shenanigans..

but to the original topic.. no skiing is not being killed by the internet. the interwebs has allowed skiing to thrive. all these webisodes/edits are personally a major reason why i ski and spend so much time on ns. i like ns because of the skiing. and i like skiing because of the skiing community/ns.

His point of the industry becoming both more ubiquitous and more decentralized is true, but I don't see how that "ruins" skiing. Maybe it ruins how special you used to feel being a newschooler ten years ago, but "skiing" is far from ruined.

It comes down to him missing the way people used to stare at his skis and ask about them, and being one of the few on the mountain with fat twins.

I feel like an old man rocking my old fujatives out there, but it makes me happy seeing younger kids with twins doing stuff i still can't even begin to try.

The sports grown, and there are some negatives that went with it but overall it's a good thing. It's natural progression.

AHHH this is cretinous.

The fact that I can watch an edit of pretty much any resort in the world doesn't make me want to stay where I am watching more edits, it makes me want to go out and ski. I would have never got into skiing if it hadn't been the numerous edits i watched on vimeo, youtube, NS etc.

When I see a 'cool spot' in an edit it makes me want to go there and ski more not sit at home!

For me that fact that so many people are producing their own edits is great. I makes the truly brilliant edits stand out and gives exposure to talented riders who would otherwise go unnoticed.
