Instructing & Patrolling

just wondering how many of you guys work (or have done work experience as) an Instructor or Patroller.. and what you think/thought of it.

I was a patroller for 2 years. It was pretty good at first, but I didn't like how it was run... most of the people in it were true to just giving first aid, but the few who's only goal was to police the hill and use their 'power' drove me insane. No more patrolling for me.

i,m an instructor I think it's cool, but when there is a lot of people who want s to have course, you cant go out and ski for yourself....

I patrolled for a year at my hill and i know what harvey is talking about. To patrol at my hill you basically have to be breathing and able to get down the mountain..regardless if you're snowplowing and falling down every 10 seconds. Some people are all about being a cop on the hill, pissed me off. The best skiing job ever though is trail crew at sunshine. It's the hardest job for the first couple months, but once the hill is covered in snow, you basically get paid to ski for the last couple months of the season.

Direct liftie quote: 'I hate you guys, the only other people who are paid to ski as much as you guys are sponsored.'

something like 35$ a day when there is a lot of people who are taking course...

I once made 70$ in a day, but it was because I was the only teacher that was able to ski powder and to speak english..

I have patrolled with harvey for the last 2 years and am doing it again this year...its not that bad...there are a few guys who would rather police than ski but other than that its an excuse to ski (if we actually get snow)

Yeah it really doesn't pay the bills if you're part time. Some of the older guys just instruct so they have enough money to go to the bar that night.

i might think about being an instructor when i get a little bit older since i get to ski when im not teaching a lesson.

cool..

i instructed last year, which i found fun for a while, but it gets a bit frustrating on nice sunny powder days when you're stuck with a beginner group..

wouldn't mind trying patrolling next season.. what sort of medical/first aid qualifications do you need (if any??) ?

im a ski/board instructor. the pay blows, we gotta rent our uniforms but meh we get a free pass

i'm a ski instructer it's alright

but it sucks when you're one of the youngin's and since you are one of the youngin's the older instructers think they can give up all the REAL beginniners to you. especially on the really nice days.

For Patrolling in the states, i believe you have to pass an OEC (outdoor emergency care) class for your patrol to consider you.. thats what i had to do, and then i was a canidate all last year. During the course of the season they test you on toboggan, assessments, etc, and then you can become a patroller.. the oec class is demanding.. like 80 hours.. glad thats over with.. but patrol is a lot of fun at my hill.

Yeah hell is teaching a 3 year olds that can barely walk let alone ski all day when it is raining really hard. And not being allowed to wear a garbage bag over your jacket because it looks 'unprofessional'. That's what hell is.

haha yeah Mike that does suck. I usually ski on those days anyway. One of last days of this season was skiing with PhattBevan, we were just throwing down some totally sick chutes where you couldn't see the bottom and it was raining and snowing the whole time, still fun but bloody miserable walking back up to the lodge, cool though. Ummmm, on topic. I have done all my first aid crap stuff so I'm gonna do part time patrolling next year hopefully.

The freakiest days as a ski instructor is when you have to give a course to a kid who is over portected by his parents abd that his parents are always following you to see if you do the job right...

i was in a lesson a long time ago at snowshoe and there with 2 kids from england. the thing that bugged me other than their accents was that their parents made them call them at the hotel after every run they took. it was crazy.

Lisa-You're a baboon!

Homer-Me? what did you say?

Lisa-BABOOOOOON!!!!!

rainy days and teaching kids who can't ski (or even worse, don't Want to ski) = def. not fun..

One day i just let my group of kids build snowmen all class - that's what they wanted to do!! - i don't think the parents were impressed.. they paid $30 bucks each for me to teach their kids how to build snowmen! hehe.

I am an instructor at Ski Sundown...It's not bad actually. There's no way I could patrol though, the patrollers here are just dicks about everything...

Can"t wait for the season to start so i can poach ski lessons and give my own advice!!!!!! Skiing is really about rocker and butters, not about turning. Ski instructers are full of bullshit. patrolers are ok though. there is somthing about neon tape that atracts gay men. I don't wan't to sound too opinionated though.

did you notice that this was a joke by bumping this up? its 10 years old and most of the people who made this post are probably dead by now.
